International Classical Guitar Festival

Classical GuitarThe Wimbledon of classical guitar competitions is coming to the “Live Music Capital of the World!” Music fans won’t want to miss out on this weeklong classical guitar festival held in Austin’s newest performing arts venue: the Long Center.

As far as classical guitar festivals go, this one’s the bee’s knees. The Guitar Foundation of America’s International Convention and Competition is a serious, though sweetly sounding, endeavor indeed. This year, GFA is partnering with 11 other organizations to bring attendees a week of non-stop music. Headliners include the Austin Symphony Orchestra, the Miro String Quartet (winner of the Avery Fisher grant), the legendary Pepe Romero, the Grammy-winning LA Guitar Quartet, and more. Expect to hear everything from lutes to flamenco music.

The International Guitar Festival isn’t just about music, though. There’s also the children’s show, free Blue Bell ice cream, and the lovely city of Austin all around. Oh, and movies, too! Austin’s local movie house, the Alamo Drafthouse, will set up a free late-night screening of “Crossroads,” the 1986 Ralph Macchio guitar movie, which will be hosted by Master Pancake Theater – the Drafthouse’s signature comedy troupe.

In 2010, the International Classical Guitar Festival will feature over 60 events over the course of 6 days.
