Family Fourth celebration

Seattle, Washington
July 4

Hailed as one of the top five fireworks displays in the country, Seattle's Family Fourth celebration offers way more to see and do than just watching fireworks. Although it's just a one-day event instead of a week-long extravaganza, Seattle crams a week's worth of fun for kids of all ages! The Playfield, open from noon to 8, has organized kid-friendly activities your family will love. And you can all team up to participate in the Street Scramble, a scavenger hunt around the park and the surrounding neighborhood. Experienced event planners have created a perfectly family-focused event, with adult beverages kept safely in a 21+ area and plenty of activities just for kids everywhere else. Pack up a cooler and prepare your own barbecue on one of the park's grills, or enjoy park food prepared for you. There's even a "kid safe" service with free wristbands for your kids so that in case you get separated, event workers can help everybody come back together safely. Book a Seattle condo rental for the festivities.

Sunoco Welcome America! Festival

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
June 28-July 6

We're not sure what the best part of this festival is – that it's one of the biggest in the nation or that it's absolutely free! Since the festival lasts for nine days, you can fit it into any holiday schedule. In addition to the obligatory fireworks show on the Fourth, you can look forward to a nightly movie (though check it out ahead of time – some are more family-friendly than others), historical displays, concerts that range from classical to jazz to pop, parades and more. Satisfy your sweet tooth at the Super Scooper All-You-Can-Eat Ice Cream Festival, and dine on classic summer barbecue every day of the holiday weekend. Philadelphia has played an important part in America's history, and they sure now how to celebrate it! Settle into a cozy Philadelphia vacation rental and you'll be affordably accommodated for as many days as you can make it out.

Fourth of July Harborfest

Boston, Massachusetts
Week of July 4

Boston embraces its historical roots in every part of this festival, but don't think that the educational and historical bent will make it too dull for kids! In addition to the historical reenactments, there are special events just for kids, especially if you come on July 1, which is "Children's Day." On this day your whole family can come for free to enjoy juggling acts, balloon sculptors and kid-friendly musicians. The rest of the festival has plenty of activities that kids will enjoy, like hands-on lessons on board a historical ship, a performance by the Boston Children's Theater and a reenacted debate between Loyalists and Patriots that has one twist: it's open exclusively to the kids in the audience! History's never been this much fun, and your kids are sure to have a great time even before the fireworks start. Boston has a lot to offer outside of the festival, so if you rent a downtown Boston condo, you'll be perfectly situated to walk the streets and visit all the museums, shops and arts performances you want.

Colonial Williamsburg

Colonial Fourth of July

Williamsburg, Virginia
July 4

What better way to celebrate history than to surround yourself with living, breathing historical figures? Colonial Williamsburg takes the idea of historical reenactment one step further, making fascinating fun for kids, who will love to see the way people in the original colonies actually lived. Visitors on the Fourth of July will have to accept a little bit of anachronism, since modern fireworks displays aren't exactly traditional to colonial days, but we think you'll forgive them! If you're willing to pay a little extra, you can enjoy a picnic dinner before the fireworks at the Governor's Palace, where you'll be treated to a full buffet while storytellers and musicians provide entertainment and games keep the kids amused. We have many lovely Williamsburg vacation rentals for families to choose from.

Americafest/4th of July Jazz and Blues Fest

Los Angeles, California
July 4

Depending on what your family likes to do, you'll find more than enough to keep you busy in Los Angeles, but these two are some of your best choices  for a family-friendly event. For a change, start with the free Vision Outside 4th of July Jazz and Blues Festival at the Vision Theater in Leimert Park to treat yourself to the very best of jazz and blues. Arts and crafts and face painting will keep even the littlest members of your family happy while you listen to the music, snack on free watermelon and enjoy food from the vendors at the event. When the jazz festival ends, head over to the Rose Bowl for fireworks. Americafest at the Rose Bowl is free for those 7 and under, though everybody else has to pay admission. Once you're in, you'll get stadium-seating views of traditional musical performances with a patriotic bent, followed by a jaw-dropping fireworks show that will bring out the kid in you. Grab a bite first outside at one of the food vendors and enjoy an old-fashioned festival feel. Stay in a Los Angeles rental condo and you can escape the cost of overpriced LA hotels, too, which makes for a great vacation no matter what.
