Why do we celebrate Martin Luther King Day?

In 1983, the federal holiday of Martin Luther King Day was created so that citizens could honor Martin Luther King Jr, the famed civil rights leader who – in the 50s and 60s – used nonviolent protest to fight for racial equality in America. For his efforts, he was tragically assassinated in 1968. At first, the holiday fell on his birthday, but it was quickly moved to the third Monday of every January so as not to conflict with Christmas and New Years Eve celebrations.
