Such a unique, fun place just like it looks in the pictures. Very clean (I'm picky about that) and comfortable. Great for visiting Volcano NP. Plants are amazing. We would absolutely stay here again.

This cottage feels very unique as it is nestled in the thick of Hawaii's forest next to Volcano Nat'l Park and still close enough to towns that it is not inconvenient. The house was stocked with all necessary kitchen supplies and feels clean and well taken care of. It accentuates the island experience with an amazing feel and high value.

My husband and I very much enjoyed our stay at Hale Hubner. We spent a great deal of our time in Volcano National Park. We were happy to have a place to head back to after a full day of hiking on volcanic rock that was within minutes of the park rather than having to drive back to the other side of the island. Hale Hubner was clean and in good condition. The bed was a Tempurpedic so excellent if that is comfy for you. There was a good selection of games and movies too. We would recommend this to our friends! Matt was great in answering questions about Volcano and Hawaii in general.

We could not have asked for a more perfect spotty spend our honeymoon. This home is absolutely amazing! So very beautiful and supplied with everything and anything one might need for their Big Island adventures. Thank you so much for all the thought that you put into the supplies left for us to use at your home. While in Volcano, we hiked the crater and also hiked out to the lava flows! AMAZING!! We even got to poke flowing lava with a stick! We also spent a lot of time at the Kalapana Ranch. We most definitely will love returning to the Big Island in the future and hope to return to your home here! Mahalo!

Mahalo for letting us stay at your awesome tree house. I'm originally from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and your place reminds me of my grandparents' place. The weather, the sound of birds and the forest brought me back to home. I love all your pictures!! I love everything about this place. We shall return. We're heading north now to frigid cold Fairbanks, Alaska. Mahalo again!

Dear Matt and Tara, Thank you for opening your Volcano home to us. It was great to be able to come back here between hiking at the end of Chain of Craters Road and going to dinner at Kilauea Lodge. Normally after our Volcao trek, we have to drive a long 2 hours to our hotel in Kona! You have a lovely home and hope to stay here again next year on our 6th annual trip to the Big Island!

Dear Matt and Tara, Thank ou so much for sharing your beautiful cabin in the woods with us! It was so peaceful and cozy and provided a perfect sanctuary for us after our treks through Volcanoes National Park. We especially enjoyed the Kilauea Iki trail and the Napau trail to the first crater. Thanks again for a wonderful stay!

Very cool, very private and memorable "tree house" right near Volcanoes National Park. Perfectly clean and cozy place. A nice combination of wood and glass, great patio as well. Child friendly. Would stay at least 3 nights in order to give Volcanoes National Park proper time...seeing the Kilauea Volcano in action at night with shooting stars overhead was unforgettable, and this house is close enough to make that experience easy. Good restaurants in Volcano town but we mostly ate in...be sure and buy groceries in Keaau on the way there. Wish we would have dedicated more time checking out the Puna coastline, what little we saw on our way out was incredible. Highly recommended...will gladly stay here again.

What a spectacular little treehouse in the jungle Hale Hubner is! From the lush greenery down the drive and outside every window, to the details throughout, this rental was an absolute gem. The kitchen had everything we needed for full-on cooking (and a great Weber grill on the deck) making it easy and convenient to dine in given the limited availability of food nearby. We must've lucked out, because we had two perfect days with sunshine - sitting on the deck enjoying the sounds of birds, an occasional cow, and a few roosters down the road. The bedding at the cabin was extremely comfortable - usually, we find pillows to be subpar when travelling, but these were ideal.
The drive to Volcano National Park to see the caldera at night was short, as was the trip to the Thurston Lava Tube. We took the time to drive down Chain of Craters road and were delighted with the petroglyph fields less than a mile off the road (and well-marked for an easy hike).
Thanks for having such a comfortable, perfectly-appointed spot for us to call home!

My group of four enjoyed staying at Hale Hubner for one week. We wish we could have stayed longer. The house is beautiful, very comfortable and well appointed. We really appreciated the very comfortable bed, and the thoughtful things that were in the house, like binoculars, iPod speakers, handmade soap and the delightful bottle of Volcano wine. The house is so peaceful and quiet that I had some of the best nights of sleep I have ever had! We loved being so close to Volcanoes National Park, and found that many other attractions are not too long of a drive away. We spent time bird watching from the lanai, and the beautiful Iiwi birds that were everywhere. It felt like staying in a rainforest tree house!
It is a short drive to the National Park, Crater Rim Drive, The Jagger Museum & Overlook and many hiking trails. The roads around the Volcano are well paved and easy to drive (i read conflicted reviews about road conditions, but it was a super easy drive.) Go to the Jagger Museum at night to watch the volcano's fiery glow.
Breakfast: Cafe Ohia (tiny cafe with outdoor picnic tables)
Lunch/Dinner: The Lava Rock Cafe
I also highly recommend the Akatsuka Orchid Farm which is in Volcano. But please note that the Orchid farm is NOT where Apple Maps OR Google Maps says it is. Ask a local and they will steer you the right way. Take a camera and enjoy photographing and smelling beautiful orchids, including one that smells like chocolate.

Hale Hubner is such a wonderful place to stay on the Big Island! My husband and I stayed 5 nights and loved the well-appointed house, beautiful jungle views, starry skies, and its proximity to great hikes, incredible snorkeling, and beautiful beaches. The house and kitchen had everything we could think of and had many things that we don’t even have at home! We enjoyed BBQing on the deck, using the wood fireplace at night, and listening to the beautiful birds in the morning. The owners were very responsive and proactive in sharing information about the house and the island. It is obvious that they love to share the beauty of Hawaii with others. We had such a lovely trip and can’t wait to return! I would definitely recommend Hale Hubner to anyone visiting the Big Island.

Hale Hubner is awesome as is all your personal touches, cards, beautiful home! Haven't been to sleep since Friday, that's the disadvantage of living in the middle of the mainland - the flight is loooonnnggg. The Hawaiian people are the nicest, happiest, hippie-est, most wonderful people we have ever met! I love the phrase that when Hawaiians come to the mainland, they have to put on their mainland face so people will not wonder why they are so happy! In addition to the pages of wonderful sites (and LOVED the helicopter ride, saw the lava flowing into the water!) - some of our other favorites were Hawi (the artists' colony) where we literally went to the northeast tip of the island, Waipi'o Valley (most impressive), Banyan Drive in Hilo, Puna where we walked at Kalapana to the top of the 2 year eruption and learned ever so much from the guard on duty, Lava Tree Park (south of Hilo along the coast) and loved the food in Waimea. ... so all in all, I think we did Hawaii pretty good! We are gonna try and keep the Hawaiian attitude going as long as we can with our customers until our mainland face appears again.

We stayed at Hale Hubner for five nights. It was our 4th trip to Hawaii. It was more relaxing and restful than a hotel or condo. Well equipped kitchen. BBQ on deck was nice. We were able to experience more of the local life than staying at a hotel. Everything we wanted to see was an easy drive from Hale Hubner. Beautiful tropical setting. Stars from the deck at night are awesome! We highly recommend staying at Hale Hubner on your next trip to Hawaii. We'll be back for sure!

Hale Hubner is one of the best situated vacation homes on the big island! The home is beautifully appointed and the floor to ceiling windows look out on the lush vegetation that surround the home. The beds are probably better than you have at home, the decor is light and airy, the natural wood floors and wood burning stove will make you feel right at home! But our ultimate delight was the fact that Hale Hubner is literally minutes away from the gorgeous black beaches, the spectacular coastal beaches, the crystal waves.... Did I mention that the volcano plumes can be seen nightly? What a perfect retreat from the 21st century! THANK YOU Matt, Tara and Lily

Great place to stay when visiting Volcano Park. Very secluded in a rain forest with tree ferns and many birds and flowers. Not close to the village, but a short 5 min drive. Has a wood stove and portable heater for warmth.
Nicely appointed, with every gadget you will need, even wifi in a Jungle!

Owners response: We're very happy you enjoyed our home in the rain forest, and found it to be well appointed for your needs. The rain forest is a wonderful place to spend time and unwind, and it does offer great privacy for relaxation. Because of its location in the forest, it's easy to forget that our house is actually located in Old Volcano Village, adjacent to Keahou Forest Reserve land. A perfect location for village amenities without sacrificing privacy. That's the primary reason we chose this property for our vacation home, and it's just around the corner from the Park. We hope you come back and stay with us again in the future. Mahalo nui loa.

The pictures of this property do not do it justice - it is far better than its photos! The place has a well appointed kitchen (they even have a blender!), very comfortable bed with high quality sheets, quiet, romantic, with plenty of space. There are also flat screen TVs & fireplace for cozy nights! Very clean and seems brand new. The owners are very thorough and responsive too.
Only minor complaints are that there is no ceiling on bathroom, so be prepared to hear everything. There are also no curtains in the bedroom so the sun will wake you up promptly in the morning unless you have your own eyeshades. Also there should be beach towels for guests and people should expect A LOT OF RAIN in this area year-round!
Recommended for: age 55+, families with young children, sight seeing, romantic getaway
Owners response: Thank you for your review! We’re so glad you enjoyed your stay at our house and found our amenities to be useful during your visit. We've tried very hard to stock our house with everything we’d hope to find in a vacation rental and include those extra amenities to make our guests feel right at home. The bathroom offers complete privacy to guests, though you are correct that the ceiling is open. This is a necessity due to the 20 ft vaulted ceiling and for access to natural lighting from the roof skylights. Unfortunately beach towels are not provided due to their likelihood of being damaged or accidentally lost, so we do kindly ask that guests provide their own. I agree that you can generally expect rain when you visit the Volcano area; however, I would share that for the most part heavy rainfall is not the norm and there are many clear sunny days with most days being a mix of misty rain and sun. If it weren't for the rain, we wouldn't have the beautiful lush rain forest that surrounds our home! Thank you so much for your feedback, and we hope to see you again in the future. Mahalo!

Hale Hubner was the perfect getaway spot for us. Located right around the corner from Volcano National Park - it was a great jumping off spot for daily excursions into the park. Spacious, Clean and Quiet- it was always great to return to in the evening as well. Wireless and Cable packages were a huge plus, And the back deck caught the morning sun nicely for coffee and fresh fruit al fresca. We stayed two weeks, and were sad to leave.

The Park is truly amazing, and we feel incredibly lucky to have a home in the preserve that surrounds the Park. It almost feels as though you aren't leaving the park at all. Thank you for being great guests, and we hope to have you come again in the near future. A hui hou!

We arrived around midnight as it's about a 2- 2 1/2 hour drive from the Kona airport. That's excluding a stop at Walmart for groceries. The directions were great though and we didn't have any problems finding the place, just were a little stressed driving in new area after dark. The cottage was just the prefect size for the 2 of us. Wonderful star viewing at night (with my android app, googlesky). Was able to locate several constellations I've never seen before. The cottage is just a few min. from volcano national park which we visited several times (my husband bought a senior national park pass a few years back and all parks are free for the car load full, other wise park admission is 10. Some of the roads within the park were closed due to excess gas emissions from the volcano, so we didn't see as much as we wanted. The Thurston lava tube however was pretty neat and a very easy walk. The film in the visitors center was well done and very informative. The Jaggar museum was great and the view was exceptional.
We went on a free nature walk through the rain forest at the Natural/nature arts center (on Old Volcano Rd.) The free walk/guide is on Saturday and one other day (can't remember). Really nice and informative. We attempted to drive to Mauna Kea to view the sunset and more stars but it was a rainy night and we turned around so missed it. We ate 2 meals at the Kilauea lodge; good food, but not cheep. We visited the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens just north of Hilo....amazing! $15/each. We drove past the observatory on our way to the Kailua-Kona area where we spend the last 4 nights of our Big Island vaca. The lava formations and past flow areas just took my breath away. It is an amazing thing to see.
If you have any doubts about the Hale Hubner, let me assure you it was a wonderful place to stay. We wish we had spent more time in Volcano just to enjoy our lush Rain Forest surroundings! We had a fire in the wood burning stove, kept us nice and toasty on the chilly nights. The bed was firm but comfortable, the kitchen well stocked. Didn't do much cooking but could have. Several small appliances including a coffee bean grinder! Wish the coffee pot had been bigger, it's only 4 cups but other than that I can't find anything negative and only positives! If we're ever back on the big island, our first choice would be to stay here again. Don't miss the farmers market on Sunday mornings at the Cooper Center! Fun and good!

Owners response: Thank you for the thorough review, Jo! It sounds like you hit a lot of the highlights from around the area. It's okay to leave a few for your next return! We're very glad you enjoyed your stay at our little cottage in the rain forest, and it sounds like you were able to make use of our amenities. I'm glad you found the kitchen well-stocked, and I've taken note that a larger coffee pot may be in order! The stars on clear nights are amazing, and that's a big part of the reason we decided to not enclose the lanai. Thank you for your recommendations, I'm sure they will help future guests plan their trips. We look forward to your return visit. A hui hou!

The property is in a beautiful neighborhood. Neighborhood stores and Sunday farmers' market nearby. Clean living space, very comfy. Short drive to volcanoes national park and many great trailheads. Lovely deck although we couldn't enjoy it because of the constant rain! Looking forward to returning during better weather (does that exist?).

Owners response: Thank you for your great compliments! I hate to say it, but you arrived right at the end of a very long dry spell! So sorry you just missed it. Volcano typically has periods of wet and dry through any given day. The rain is welcome because it's what gives us the lush rain forest vegetation that surrounds the village. What I love about the climate is that the rain is almost always followed by the bluest clear sunny skies. We just recently added a patio table with umbrella so that our guests can sit out and enjoy the deck even if there is a light rain. We also added covers for our patio chairs so there's no need to wait for the sun to dry them following a rain shower. We welcome your return, and hope you have a chance to enjoy our wonderful lanai! A hui hou!

After working on big island for a couple weeks, my family joined me and we set out to explore Hawaii Island. We loved our time on the beaches above Kona, but we equally loved our time in Volcano National Park and your home gave us the perfect base camp. Your home is in a beautiful forest and is very comfortable and warm. When I asked for a reservation for the 4 of us grown adults, you warned me that my girls would have to sleep on the futon. No worries, but instead, my wife and I took over the futon so we could sleep in front of the wood fireplace. This was the most comfortable futon we'd every slept on. We loved the feel of the home, the cool crisp evenings and the cool moist mornings in the forest. We made a fire every morning and night. Bathroom and kitchen accommodations were great. We liked it a lot!

Owners response: Kevin, mahalo to you and your family! You were such great guests, and I am glad you enjoyed our place as much as we do. Yes, the futon mattress is the best I have ever come across. It actually has springs, so you will never feel the back boards like other futons I have owned or slept on in the past. And, as you noted, it is a great place to sleep if you wish to drift away next to the wood stove. Thank you for your correspondence on the trip. I am glad you got to experience much of the Big Island and all it has to offer. We hope you come back soon!

When Hoku told me we wold be staying at a vacation home near Hilo, I had no idea we would be staying in a photographers' stronghold 5 minutes away from Kilauea. As a man of Native Hawaiian and caucasian descent, the house's (excuse me, home's) smell put me back to my childhood days at my late Grandparents' farm in Florida, yet the undeniable beauty made me feel at home, still in my Hawai'i nei. I fell in love. As an new photography enthusiast (addict) I was so stoked to to see your art work on the wall and couldn't wait to go out there and "get some". Although we haven't had shared any previous correspondence, I could tell you seemed like pono people and that made me feel even more welcome and at ease. This was the most memorable getaway I've had in a long time and I am grateful so mahalo, mahalo, mahalo piha. I cannot wait to return, and trust me, we will.

What a wonderful, cozy home in the rainforest! The cottage is lovely - hardwoods & large windows throughout, nice, stocked kitchen, updated bathroom. It is very private as it is surrounded by the rain forest. The owners have done everything they could to make this a comfortable place to stay, like having the "nice-ities" of home there in their home. They are very responsive as well. It was such a pleasant experience for us and a perfect place for us to stay while celebrating our 10-year wedding anniversary.
Also, it is very close to Volcano National Park.

Owners response: Congratulations again on your 10th anniversary. What a great way to celebrate this milestone! We're glad you enjoyed the peace and privacy of our property. We find it a perfect spot because it is located in Volcano Village, but you never feel surrounded by others. We've stayed at a number of vacation rentals in our travels, and we hoped to stock our house with all the niceties we've found useful as guests ourselves. We're glad you found the house well-appointed, and we hope to have you back again in the near future!

We had a very relaxing stay at Hale Hubner. With the high ceilings and many windows, we felt close to the amazing tropical gardens full of huge tree ferns and wonderful privacy. The cottage was so well appointed, with so much care for detail, that we felt like very special guests.

Thank you for providing such a warm and cosy place for our visit to Volcano Nat'l Park! We enjoyed waking up to all those sounds of nature and to look out all those big windows and see the lush rainforest. The kitchen was well stocked and we especially appreciated the big cooler shopping bag to put all the goodies we bought at Hilo's farmer's market. We highly recommend Hale Hubner!

We loved this little cottage in the forest. Very clean and had everything you would need. Even a highchair and crib for our little one. I would recommend this place to anyone visiting the volcano for a few days. It was just a short drive away. Thanks again Hale Hubner for making our volcano stay a memorable one.

We really enjoyed staying at Hale Hubner. It was truly a cozy retreat to come back to after spending our days out exploring the Big Island. It had everything we needed and then some, with a fully stocked kitchen, beautiful surroundings, and a wonderful deck. The large windows are amazing, and yet the cottage is still very private. I loved hearing the birds in the morning and seeing the star filled sky from the deck on the clear nights. In addition to have a separate bedroom, the futon in the living room was the most comfortable I've ever slept on (didn't even feel like a futon). You can tell that the owners really want you to have a comfortable stay with all your needs met. I not only used their travel coffee mugs and shopping bags almost every day, but I liked looking at their personal framed photographs of scences and animals from the Big Island. I was also very thankful for the on-site washer and dryer, which worked wonderfully. I even had the chance to watch the Merry Monach Festival Hula Competition on their nice flat panel TV one evening, complete with crackling fire and a glass of wine. You really can't go wrong staying here. Wonderful place with easy access to so many nearby attractions and activities...everything from snorkeling, hiking, and shoping. I feel really blessed to have had the chance to stay in such a lovely home on such a beautiful island.

Owners response: Mahalo for the wonderful review! We're so glad you were able to make use of the amenities we have provided. it is our belief that having that feel of home is what separates renting a vacation home from staying in a hotel. We think the Volcano area is a very special place, and we're glad you truly enjoyed your stay here! We hope you make a return visit in the future and choose to stay with us again!

We really enjoyed our stay at this house! Its in a great spot for day trips all over the island. This was our first trip to the Big Island and this house was a really comfortable, cozy, easy place to stay. It was a great place to just "get away". I loved being surrounded by all the plants and not feeling like there were tourists everywhere.
The house was nicely maintained and the owners added a lot of thoughtful details like reusable shopping bags, area information and travel coffee mugs. I would highly recommend the Volcano farmers market and the Thai restaurant in town. Who knew such good restaurants would be in Volcano.
I want to go back now and would highly recommend the house to others!

Thank you for a wonderful stay. We really enjoyed our time here. This cottage was a great place to come home to after a long day of exploring the volcanoes and sightseeing. We were not able to see the glow of Kilauea from the house, so we drove up there at night - it was absolutely AMAZING! We hope to be able to see it again some day. Thank you again. Aloha.

What an adorable cabin in the woods! Completely surrounded by ferns and trees, it's as if you're staying in your own private rain forest, but with all the comforts of home. Beautiful wood floors and interior give it a truly authentic Hawaiian feel. My husband and I loved the wood burning fireplace for the chilly nights. Speaking of nights, the fact that you are only a mile or so away from Volcano National Park entrance means you can easily check out the the glow of Kilauea's Halema'uma'u crater in the dark, which is amazing! We also loved having a kitchen because when we visited the local markets, we had a place to cook and store our delicious finds. This cabin is the best of both worlds -- secluded, but also close to amazing hiking, markets and beaches. Don't pass it up!
