We rented this house (2 couples) and really loved it. There was plenty of space and fwe felt right at home. We especially enjoyed hanging out in the livingroom with a nice fire in the woodstove. The view from the dining area was beautiful- across the meadow to the ocean. We also enjoyed strolling down the dirt road to the pebbly beach for a nice long walk. I would highly recommend this place!

Cable Crossing is a lovely home full of character and is a perfect spot for a quiet, family vacation. The rooms are spacious but cozy, and the view from all the back rooms and deck is just beautiful. Doug and Betsy have prepared the house so thoughtfully. Wherever we went on the island, it was good to know we had such a place to return to. Our four kids always had something interesting to do and to look at, whether it was playing with toys and games from the well-stocked game closet or taking a walk down the lane to the beach to look at the fascinating rocks and the view of islands and mountains and boats. Even the children's videos are well chosen and there were plenty of quality children's books to read to them and for them to read! We never lacked for any tools in the kitchen and enjoyed being able to compost our produce scraps. The cottage binder is full of menus of local restaurants and interesting articles on local events. There are even books of local lore to dip into and plenty of sightseeing information. There is even plenty of rain gear if your own collection is not Maine-worthy. Our only regret was not booking two weeks in this lovely home on this beautiful island!

A perfect home on the Quiet Side of MDI

This lovely old house right outside of the charming, unstuffy town of Southwest Harbor had everything that two vacationing families with four children total could need for a peaceful, relaxed and happy weekend. The owners of this home have very thoughtfully outfitted the house so that it truly felt like OUR home away from home instead of us staying in someone else's house for the week. We had everything we needed for rainy days (raincoats, rain pants, boots), quiet afternoons (lots of nice games), cooking and exploring. The free Island Explorer house stops right outside the front door, making it convenient to get to the busy side of the island with Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor etc. We felt like we were just starting to scratch the surface after a week, so stay for two weeks if you can.

A Slice of Heaven on the Quietside

This beautiful farmhouse fulfilled all of our vacation dreams. Surrounded by fall leaves, quiet farms and quaint cottages, words can't describe the serene beauty of this special place. We enjoyed the farmhouse immensely - from the cozy bedrooms overlooking the ocean to the fully (and thoughtfully) stocked kitchen. The view of the ocean from the back of the house was stunning, especially at sunrise and sunset. The easy walk down Cable Crossing Road to the ocean was a daily routine for us. Our 2-yr.old grandson immediately discovered the collection of well worn walking sticks off the back porch, and used his favorite each day as we made our way to the water to explore the tidal pools and the apple trees. We also treasured the wood burning stove each night as lows dipped in the 40's (cold for Houstonians). Doug and Betsy are the ultimate hosts, as they truly anticipate your every need. A fully stocked game closet made for fun evenings around the fire, and the kitchen contained everything we needed and more - including a rolling pin when we decided to make a homemade apple pie! This didn't feel like a "rental place", it felt like a home with every possible personal touch included. They even provided a full binder of information for local restaurants and activities, instructions on all of the amenities of the home, local menus, etc. We brought along a laptop computer to look up local information, but never needed it! If you are compelled to be "wired", the house is equipped with wireless internet. We originally planned to eat most meals out, but enjoyed the home so much, we cooked breakfast and dinner in each night, and visited restaurants in SW Harbor and Bar Harbor only for lunch. Our lobster boil at the house was less expensive and far surpassed the one we had at Thurston's Lobster Pound our first day there. The "quietside" is exactly that - removed from the tourists and cruise ship crowds that flood Bar Harbor. We could not have found a better place for our "Fall in New England" adventure, and we could not have been blessed with better hosts. Thanks for everything, Doug & Betsy! It was everything we hoped for and more.

We had a wonderful time at Cable Crossing Cottage. We really felt at home there. Walking to the ocean each morning at low tide was a tremendous event. Picking the crabs and mussels and throwing rocks in the water was so much fun.
Doug and Betsy were wonderful hosts. Betsy, esp., went out of her way to answer all our questions and make us feel at home.
Southwest Harbor turned out to be a much nicer location for our group than Bar Harbor. SW Harbor is not as busy or touristy as Bar Harbor, and the restaurants and shops were even better close to the house.
Acadia National Park is truly delightful, the perfect vacation spot for people of all ages. The hiking, biking, etc. was so relaxing and fun. I highly recommend this house and this locale.

Charged with finding the "perfect" cottage on Mt. Desert for three couples, I read ad after ad until I ran into Cable Crossing Cottage. It immediately felt right, and was presented for approval. Some concern was voiced over the size listed, but we were soon agreed. Correspondence with owners Doug and Betsy convinced us we had made the right choice. They readily answered all questions and were decidedly friendly and obviously eager to make an enjoyable holiday their priority.
Cable Crossing Cottage is not for those looking for a new condo or new home. It is as advertised -- a true, original 1890 farmhouse. However, Doug and Betsy have taken great care in restoring the house. Upon our arrival, we found a home offering modern conveniences but with all the charm and ambience of another time. Features such as a beautifully glazed claw foot tub, original wooden door and window moldings, and an unpainted picket fence covered in mosses lent a feeling of have stepped back in time. In restoring the home, Doug and Betsy have been meticulous in choosing the perfect combination of wall colors and daring painted original plank flooring showing beneath area rugs. These features blend seamlessly with new washer and dryer, gas range, refridgerator, counter tops, sinks, and on-demand hot water heater.
There are two comfortable bedrooms upstairs -- each of which can be set up as king size beds -- and a very spacious bath between the two. Both rooms offer beautiful meadow, ocean, mountain, and island views in combination with a well lighted airyness found throughout the cottage. The downstairs offers three entrances serving the picket enclosed front yard, parking convenient side yard, and front porch. The downstairs has large expanses of ocean side glass designed to accentuate the fabulous views while in no way conflicting with the period feel of the farm house. An open floor plan with sitting area and dining (w/view) for six combined with a master ensuite bedroom and roomy kitchen make up the downstairs. Extending the living area outside, a large front porch facing the sea offers dining for six and a beautiful gas grill perfect for evening meals. Completing the home is an open face wood stove for those chilly Maine evenings and a cellar well stocked with seasoned firewood.
The clincher is the hospitality. Games, CD & DVD players, full island reference materials, lobster cooker, etc. etc. Doug and Betsy have really thought of it all!!

We were very privliged to have stayed in the beautiful Cable Crossing Cottage for a fortnight in May. Coming from Australia we were made to feel totally at home, with everything we could possibly need provided for. It was wonderful to watch the ever changing vista over the mountains and water from this beautiful spot! Thanks Doug and Betsy
