Best Price and Best Location

Review submitted: August 2, 2014   Date of arrival: June 1, 2014

We stayed and loved the price for a cottage in La Jolla where we had our own yard, although not large very adequate considering all others this price were condos with no yard and attached to other units. We could have our dog and he had a place to be outside or inside. The courtyard is full of plants and flowers and a small grass area, so for us, sitting outside at the outdoor table and using a bbq to make our own grilled veggies and steaks, is way better than being inside a hotel room costing twice as much and being 1/2 the size. The location requires no car and being on a budget, we decided to take a taxi and stay , walk to farmers market, stores, shops, park and the beach. Perfect place for my husband, my doggie and my little girl to have a house on a budget, small but clean and really pretty marble floors, not just tile. We found it quiet too, so my husband could work on the internet. We could dine in with the kitchenette and full fridge, and several cook top appliances, and all we need to make our own meals, full table too. The owners were gracious and peaceful for us to deal with.

I love summers in La Jolla. Grew up surfing wind n sea beach, 6 generations back. I moved to oregon but come back summers to see my family. I have seen all the rentals and cottages over the years on r2 lots and done a lot of real estate. I rent the cottage every year for myself and family and friends that need to visit our parents. I felt the need to speak up for La Jolla family who rents this. Of all the cottage it is one of the larger for a cottage and also very nicely refurbished, being a 1932 historical home, many things have been done to keep this cottage great for anywhere from 1 to 4 even 5 folks, vs a hotel room down the street that would be 2 to 3 times more with less space. Prices are at a premium at the beach and the price for the cottage is below market. It is clean and modest. It has marble travertine floors that are very nice for pets and clean to humans.
It has a kitchenette with various appliances for preparing foods, a grill, new wave cooktop that you can't burn your hand, and two other electric skillets, and all the needs. It has indoor and outdoor dining, although small it is not tiny nor a shack by any means.
I have had my two kids and wife when we don't feel like spending an arm and a leg and although a studio we have our own stand alone house. When we want to spend more we rent the front house which is totally private and separate. I have come to know the owners over the years in both the communality and as a tenant and they have always upgraded the cottage a bit every year to make it nicer. It has foe finish paint and art work. nice furniture, internet and cable and even a wood stove fireplace. Lots of plants and a private gated entrance. When I see negative posts I wonder what people expect for a great rate in La Jolla and I know something else is wrong, as there is nothing wrong with this rental. I can walk to everything and its very quiet for being in the village. I highly recommend it for those budget minded and ok with a studio house cottage , it is what it is. And by no means not cared for or dirty. It is remodeled but not a new home, but with standard clean fixtures that work. We won't be deterred by a one time bad tenant and Mike and Liza have been there for us many times as great hosts. We just know someone who wanted it for free after they arrived had to retaliate and there should be such a thing as owners beware of renters who don't pay rent or stiff the owners. I myself own rentals in Oregon and know
its labor of love.

I rent regularly the Beach Cottage Charmer and am a physician.
The owners contacted me to check the cottage and leave my review.
I will when not traveling also post online. I stay about every other month for a week. I teach seminars in town and have known the owners 20 years. To help them out after reading a posting, the cottage has no mold. In winter the beach areas get fog and are prone to chill however, that requires turning on a heater or fireplace of which this cottage has both and gets very toasty. All the homes by the beach were built in 1926 and early 1930s and are historic. THis cottage has been remodeled and is not one of the musty ones. It is older but not moldy and has all one needs to make an affordable trip and is clean, comfortable, and has its own yard in an areas that the minimum property sells for 1.25 million starting rate. To stay at a motel in the area is 300 a night. This cottage goes for a reasonable rate of 95 to 150 a night for 1 to 4 people. My wife and I have stayed in summer with three kids for a week to go surfing. I have stayed this January and this April both before and after the negative post and feel this was an attack on the owners for money and not for bad housekeeping. I recommend this home to renters, If you have allergies you may want to consider all beach homes here are older but this cottage is CLEAN.

I opened the door to this little run-down shack and was hit with a wave of mold and mildew that made my eyes water. Someone had attempted to mask the smell with some disinfectant that gave the room a chemical odor which also smelled of urine. The bathtub was even lined with black mold and there were wet spots on the walls of the main room. I decided to give it a try anyway as I needed a place to stay and had rented the property for a month. The plastic covered mattress - I repeat the plastic covered mattress - on the bed was ridiculous and repeatedly woke me up as I tossed and turned through the night. Meanwhile, my eyes and lungs began to burn in a reaction that is similar to how my body responds to mold and mildew. I began coughing and having difficulty breathing. It was a horrible night. I tried calling the owners several times but ended up having to move out after one night. The owners ultimately stopped returning my calls, and never refunded any portion of the significant amounts I paid in advance. Absolutely criminal. BEWARE!!!!

Owners response: Notice the words criminal. The person renting committed a crime. When threatening me for money he told me he was with the FBI. This is Malicious intent to coerce owners for money by posting a negative review and it is untrue. Coercion is a crime.
If I had mold I would not rent. I have 8 Five Star Reviews including the day before his arrival a doctor rented. If my maid had not cleaned I would apologize. I check my maids and checked this unit with photographs. My partner investigated and found a babies items were brought in. We offered him a free upgrade into our house next door, that is double in price as a solution at no charge. He refused. He originally said it was too small yet we have regularly couples and up to four with kids or pets. He wanted his money back before arriving. I let him in early due to his flight. He was ill on arrival. I worked to re book and would re fund if we re booked. There was no solution that worked including detail cleaning free upgrades. My partner reported him to CPS because he was supposedly fired from his job bringing his baby across the border. We are not sure what he is running from or why he wouldn't even accept an upgrade and why he made threats and coercion for money, but we feel maybe we should screen tenants credit reports, but we have not as we don't want to turn away folks. This is not as it appears, the cottage is immaculate. Have an agent preview it for you if you wish of your choice. We have rented since 1996 no complaints. Owners with integrity.

Beautiful Artistic Cottage!

Review submitted: March 15, 2014   Date of arrival: March 3, 2014

This beautiful little stand-alone cottage is perfect for your kids to stay in when you're in the main house or as a cozy romantic place for a couple. It is part of a beautiful house which has lots of space for a beach home, and it is beautifully decorated inside and out with a lush tropical yard. It's in a perfect location within walking distance of the beach and quaint downtown La Jolla. If you're looking for a sunny California vacation near the beach, these affordable properties are the perfect choice.

Winter by the Beach is summer in LaJolla cottage

Review submitted: February 24, 2014   Date of arrival: January 11, 2014

We are sitting here on the patio and the sun is shinning in January and
our little dog is happy too. What a great place for the price of less than a motel in La Jolla. A yard for pets, lots of flowers in winter, a bbq, and indoor and outdoor table. We came down to get away from the cold
up north and this is one good week to warm us up. The cottage has everything you need and is very efficient and cute. What heart went into the
color and art work and venetian plaster walls the owner told us he did himself. Our kids visited us for 5 of the 7 nights and we were able to afford it and bigger again than a motel for less, two queens and futon in the cottage worked great for our family, although we thought it would be too small, it was not and we had the patio to spread out with a small yard.
Our dog sunned himself every motning in winter! WE recommend the owners who are kind and courteous and care about their home and renters
Thanks for the stay we could afford a place in La jolla by the beach.

We enjoyed your place tremendously

Review submitted: October 27, 2011   Date of arrival: October 9, 2011

We enjoyed your place tremendously. It was great to venture out of the norm of Mission Beach and do something different. Wind n Sea is gorgeous, but a bit more difficult with little ones. We found La Jolla Shores to be a bit more kid friendly. We would definitely rent from you again. We also greatly appreciate that you were flexible with the rental price under such short notice.

Thank you for a wonderful vacation.

Relaxing Time in La Jolla Area Casita

Review submitted: June 15, 2011   Date of arrival: May 13, 2011

Overall, I had a great time. The location was great, and it was really nice to have a reasonably priced place to hang out that included full bath and kitchen. The unit was clean and the bed very comfortable. I loved the natural light allowed in by the sky light during the day, but struggled a bit with how bright it was right over the bed at the crack of dawn. All in all, I was happy with the experience and I would consider staying there again if I return to SD in the future. Thanks for asking,

Spring Getaway in a Beautiful Tranquil Beach House

Review submitted: May 10, 2011   Date of arrival: April 17, 2011

We had a wonderful stay at the cottage. I love the peaceful setting; the open-floor plan, the soothing colours, the artwork and the little patio area. The evenings were very quiet and mornings lovely with the birds. The location is ideal; walking distance to the beaches and the village. Mike and Liza were very accomodating; they answered any concerns or questions promptly. I hope to revisit this area very soon!

Wintering in sunny San Diego from Illinois Snow

Review submitted: February 22, 2011   Date of arrival: January 15, 2011

Good Morning,

We had a very nice time in La Jolla. Everthing was well within reach including the beaches and especially our grandchildren who live in Scripps Ranch.
I trust that you found everything in order at the cottage.
Thank you once again.
