We have been renting condos in Kona for many years and this one is the most beautiful that my wife and I have ever found. The decor is much nicer than most rentals. The high-end furniture makes it feel much more like a home rather than a typical vacation rental. The condo complex is beautifully maintained. We loved sitting on the lanai, feeling the ocean breezes while we ate breakfast in the morning. As an additional note, the complex was usually very quiet, without the heavy partying and noise you find at other places.
A wonderful place to relax!

Our Kona Home Away From Home

Hawaii 2009 (Chicago, Illinois)
Review submitted: March 1, 2009   Date of arrival: February 2, 2009

My husband and I had a wonderful time at the Kona Makai. The unit was clean, comfortable and in a great location. The bed in the Master was extremely comfortable and the balcony was everything and more than what was reflected in the photograph on the Home Away site. The best thing about the Kona Makai is its location. The condo is a 15 minute walk to downtown Kona and it was wonderful to walk into town for meals and for the wonderful shopping in downtown Kona. The unit is also a very easy drive to the Harbor for snorkeling, fishing and whale watching trips and is an easy half hour drive from the Kona Airport. The pool, hot tub and grounds are very clean and very lush and there is a wonderful patio right on the ocean where you can sit and watch the whales and dolphins pass by. We also found the most amazing snorkeling nearby at Kahalu'u Beach Park. It truly was like swimming in an aquarium. The Kona Makai really is more for adults as there are no flotation devices or games allowed in the pool and no play areas in the complex. I would say 50% of the residents in the complex are retirees who live there fulltime. Because Anita's unit has the loft with a queen bed, the unit could be a perfect place for that "girlfriend" vacation. Anita is terrific to work with and making our reservations was easy and worry-free. The condo is located in an area where there are more condos and very few hotels and resorts (unlike farther south on the island) but we really liked that about this unit. Downtown Kona had lots of different places to eat for both breakfast and dinner, all within walking distance! There is also plenty of shopping and interesting things to wander and see. We would definitely stay not only in the condo again, but in the Kona area. Our trip and our stay was everything a more then we hoped for.

Exellent View - Great Location!

The view from the top floor lanai is just beautiful! Just as others had said, we really enjoyed our coffee in the morning while listening to local birds and ocean below.

The condominium gives a large feel with the vaulted open beam ceilings. Windows and large sliders open up nicely for great breezes.

The beds are very comfortable and the entire interior nicely decorated with that year-round living look, that gives you the feeling your borrowing your friends nice condominium.

Many amenities, condiments and sundries are within the kitchen and about. The owner offers newcomers lots of local information for dining, entertainment and exploration. DSL Wi-Fi offered free by owner.

Great Location & Very Relaxing

A really great location, and a great condo. Very peaceful and a great view. We ate our breakfast on the Lanai and could watch a pod of dolphins right off shore. The condo looks great and is spacious with the second floor bedroom and the spiral staircase. The condo is located very close to many great shops and restaurants as well. We loved it and highly recommend it!

What a treat!! Would definitely stay here again!!

This condo was perfect for our family of 3. Our 7 year old daughter was delighted with her very own loft bedroom at the top of the spiral staircase. The owners' attention to comfort and detail is very apparent when you see the lovely furniture and decor. The lanai was our favourite place to start and end each day.
We wish we had spent more time at the complex enjoying the beautifully maintained grounds, the wonderful views and just relaxing by the pool but ... the weather couldn't have been better and the condo's location was great for our day trips all over the Big Island.

Kona rental

This condo is just fair. Very small - there was no dining room table so either eat outside or on the living room couch. The shower curtain was all moldy and gross when we arrived so we had to wash it upon arrival, otherwise it was relatively clean. Very small washer and dryer. There is some snorkeling here but the access is a little difficult from the lava rock. If you are a strong swimmer, it's fine but if not, you're better off snorkeling somewhere else. Pretty close to Kona restuarants by car or a 15 minute walk.

Owners response: As my ad now reads, the condo is best for couples or a couple with one careful child. I no longer rent to families with more than one child. My cleaners have replaced the shower curtain and we have new bath rugs and towels. We will be replacing the dryer in February with an energy -effiiency model. This complex is beautiful, well-maintained, and really more for adults - a romantic getaway!

My emails and guestbooks are filled with compliments and praise over the uniqueness of furnishings and decor. The above is the only negative commentary I have received since we first rented it out.
