THE REFUGE AT TALL PINES
Bamboo Breather
(United States)
Review submitted: April 16, 2013
Date of arrival: April 4, 2013
THE Refuge at Tall Pines was a lovely escape. The cabin was well appointed. A person could stare at the lovely woods from expansive picture windows. Or, turn interiorly and play ping pong, listen to CDs, browse through sightseeing information. Tall Pines has a story to tell - read all about it in any of the cabins.

I was thinking I would write about how beautiful "The Refuge" cabin was with its snug Colorado spruce logs, or how fun the family room with its foosball and pingpong table, or how neat the frisbee golf course and treasure hunt hikes were, but my post would be entirely too long. So all I will write is that Tall Pines Inn is a very unique experience. The owners have put tremendous thought and effort into everything. We can't wait to return.

Pictures of this place do not do it justice. Best 2 days ever. It was quiet, cozy, romantic, beyond beautiful. We will definitely be going back. Of all the places in the states or beyond that we have visited, aside from our honeymoon, this was the best. Thank you for sharing your piece of heaven with us.

I stayed at the Refuge with my wife and another couple for a week of relaxation right after the holidays. Let me start by saying, we will be back here. The cabin was absolutely wonderful. It was very clean and very well maintained. It had all relatively new major appliances (microwave, stove, oven, dishwasher, washer, dryer). The upstairs suite was a large room with a king bed and attached bathroom with shower and jacuzzi hot tub. The main floor had two queen bedrooms and a shared bathroom with a shower/tub. The bottom floor had the washer and dryer, a large screen tv (not HD), a few couches, a foosball table, and a walkout screened in porch with two futon sofas. The main floor and the bottom floor both had gas fireplaces that were WONDERFUL. I'm usually not one to car about how a place was decorated, but I have to say, they did a really nice job decorating the place in a mountain cabin motif. Another thing that really impressed me was all of the details the owners took care of. Here's just a few examples: We didn't know the place had a dishwasher, so we didn't buy any soap for it, but they already had a full box waiting for us (same with the washing machine detergent). They also had a bunch of non-perishable groceries in the cabinets (e.g. salt). They had a nice selection of current movies downstairs next to the dvd player. They had a nice selection of novels and books on a book case along the stairs. They had a nice selection of board games in one of the queen rooms.
The hot tub on the deck was really nice. It only fit one couple comfortably (maybe a few kids too). It was too small for two couples. We did the treasure hunts and they were fun. I can see kids having a lot of fun with them.
Overall, the place was clean, comfortable, peaceful, and really well thought out by its owners.
Some other minor info: The internet connection was solid and speedy. My verizon smartphone got 4G amazingly. Branson was around 25 minutes away and a gas station convenience store was about 5 minutes.

The property is perfect, well decorated, stocked. Beds are very nice, it is has shown in the pictures on the web site, lots of really nice extras have been provided in the cabin. We had an outstanding time playing games, putting puzzles together and cooking/eating wonderful holiday foods. The cabin was decorated for Christmas both inside and out-- it was very pretty, well done. We will return soon.

All I can say is WOW! What a wonderful place to take your loved ones. We have been coming to Branson for years and have rented condos, cabins, hotels, you name it --- and this one is the best we've come across. The Refuge is such a cozy, quaint, beautiful cabin tucked into the hills. Everything from the deck, the hot tub, the kitchen, the game room, the decor ---- just really nice. We are big foodies and the cabin is geared to cook --- Whether it's grilling steaks on the Weber gas grill, to roasting a chicken in the oven. I would highly reccomend this cabin to anyone. Well done indeed! We will DEFINATELY be back. Thanks Margie and Bruce! -Phil from Fayetteville

We have rented over 20 cabins around the country, but this one was the best one yet! This cabin is gorgeous, with so many special touches that make it so warm and welcoming. Loved the look of the logs partially covered with bark, the three levels all decorated so tastefully, the hot tub under the stars, and the many antiques throughout the home. Enjoyed the books about how the cabin was built and recommendations of what to do around Branson, which we did end up doing! We didn't want to leave. This was more costly than others we've rented, but worth it to splurge this time!

We rented Woodsong & Hiding Place for my parents' 50th anniversary. We had a wonderful time and found ourselves enjoying the stay at the cabins more than anything else on the trip. They cabins are nicely done, comfy and lovely. We had gatherings and meals and Hiding Place and then retired to separate cabins for sleeping and for hanging out with coffee in the mornings to watch deer and birds. The price was very reasonable and far better than any hotel. The setting is very scenic, peaceful and relaxing. Branson can be tiresome with all the tourist traps and crowds so we often just had meals at the cabins and hung out enjoying the company. Just what a vacation should be - non-stressful and nice.
Both cabins were great for our parents, who can't do stairs well. They each had a bedroom and full bath on the first floor and eating and gathering areas on the same floor. Woodsong Cottage was especially easy for them to get into and out of with only a couple of shallow steps up out front. We had two dogs with and they relaxed and had a good time as well. Would highly recommend these cabins.

My husband & I celebrated our 30th anniversary by taking our daughter, her husband, our 2 grandsons, our oldest son & his girlfriend, our youngest son & my mom. That's 8 adults & 2 children! We didn't want to get 4 hotel rooms so the search for a house to rent for 5 days began when we found Margie & Bruce & their Refuge.
When we got to the cabin, it was EXACTLY like the photo's! EXACTLY like the descriptions! The family kept saying WOW as they went from room to room! Margie was soooo helpful answered my thousand & one questions when she easily could have said: Look in the box! They have a box FULLLL of brochures & maps of the activites & attractions in the Branson/Table Rock Lake area.
I had read some of the other reviews, so took soap & my husband was sure we'd run out of toilet paper with TEN people! :) We didn't need either!
That 1st night we got our bearings & then went to Pizza By the Chef (recommended by Margie). Absolutely DELICIOUS! We spent the evening going through the brochures. There was something for EVERYONE! There was fishing with Buster Love (My daughter & son-in-law LOVED him!) ... Dixie Stampede (Margie/Bruce's daughter is in it but we couldn't figure out which one. Lol) ... Yakov's Dinner Theatre (GREAT SHOW! The ending will make you cry!) ... Go-carting (Nothing funnier than watching a 3 year old drive) ... Shopping @ Grand Village (Disappointed but it WAS the 4th) Mel's Diner in Grand Village (LOVED the waitresses/waiters singing to the patrons) ... Ripley's ... Miniature golf ... Scenic Railway. We ran out of time for the Zipline & swimming. The access closest to us was closed. We started our days with breakfast on the deck & ended it on the deck talking about all we had done & what was on the agenda for the NEXT day!
We went during the HOTTEST week of the summer, so the screened in porch was out of the question, but we knew that ahead of time & took 2 air mattresses. There were only 2 bathrooms, which I thought might be a problem but we managed to get baths, showers & the bathroom with no problems! ; ) The boys did complain that they could hear EVERYTHING down in the family room, but we were up in the master bedroom, so I didn't see what the issue was! LOL I think my mom summed it up best ... Kathy, You need to make reservations for NEXT year NOW!! LOL
Thanks Margie & Bruce!

We have stayed in a lot of nice home during the years we have been coming to Branson. What sets Tall Pines apart from the rest is the owners. This is our second stay on their property. The first was at the Sanctuary. The Refuge is a beautiful cabin. Margie and Bruce are wonderful people and always prompt to respond to any questions you might have. Their attention to detail is wonderful to see. We plan on going back to the Sanctuary next year.

Our family of nine, two parents and seven kids, had a very comfortable and fun getaway at the Refuge. The grounds are meticulously kept, yet harmonious with the surrounding wild and natural beauty. They have hiking trails and treasure boxes, what fun! The cabin, while rustic in appearance, is luxuriously appointed, and feels comfortable and serene. We could not have imagined anything more welcoming to return to after an adventurous day seeing the Branson sights. As an added treat, we had the pleasure of meeting the proprietors' son in law, who came out to take care of some landscaping. He was warm and polite, and it is clear that creating a place of refuge is a calling for this family. We highly recommend The Refuge at Tall Pines in Branson, or any of the homes on the expansive twenty acre property. You will not be disappointed; our stay exceeded our expectations, which were high to begin with! It truly is a beautiful place!

The Refuge was the perfect refuge. Peaceful, quiet, relaxing. This is a wonderful property and everything was perfect. We had the opportunity to meet Bruce and it was all good until my protective schnauzer thought he was a threat...sorry Bruce...mommy comes first!! Thank you for sharing your wonderland home and property. I highly recommend this property to anyone who wants to be in Branson. We hardly left the cabin and thank you so much for allowing my pups to come along. I will be back and I will spread the word in fort smith, arkansas. The only complaint I have read about is the lack of soap in the bathrooms...I left mine everywhere I could..please...you will be so relaxed you may not even take a shower...Thank you for sharing your beautiful home..I hope to be back very soon

Exceptional property! We had our "Cabin in the woods" Christmas celebration with our children and grandchildren and we were delighted in every way! The little details and accommodations were wonderful. Note, if you are bothered by a little bit of squeaky floors, you may not be as ecstatic as were we, but I thought that added to the charm. Would definitely recommend it!

We had a lovely time with our dogs, walking through fields and the woods. We checked out the lake which is just down the way. I'd like to go back and bring my grandchildren, maybe use the sleeping porch. The cabin was clean and well stocked. I enjoyed the decor, it is very welcoming.
We were so busy relaxing that we didn't feel the need to go into Branson. We ate meals out, down at the Twin Islands.

Having never been to MO, my family and I were unsure what to expect (of the terrain). We fell in love with the area even before we arrived at the cabin. The directions that they sent to us were accurate and very east to follow. We traveled thru 3 days of rain/gloomy weather and when we were about 1/2 hr. from the cabin the sun came out and the weather was picture perfect for the entire week we were there! Thank you GOD!!! When I first walked into the cabin I turned to my husband and told him I wasn't leaving......EVER! I loved it that much.
The only rating you can give the cabin and Bruce and Marge is 5 stars - we give them a 10!!! The description of this cabin doesn't really do it justice - it is what I have dreamed about for a home for most of my life. It feels like "home", right down to the little decorating details. The location from downtown Branson, is just far enough (about 15-20 min.) to feel like you are totally alone and yet we saw a show almost everyday. The trails on the property (wish we had known about one of them sooner) were spectacular and you are only about 1 mile from Table Rock Lake, which is also beautiful.
We rented the cabin to celebrate an Anniversary, but invited members of both families (9 of us total) and there was more than enough room to accomodate all of us. I would highly recommend The Refuge (or any of the cabins) to any and everyone!! My mother already is planning a trip back for next year.
Thank you Bruce and Marge (and Kory) for helping make one of my dream vacations come true. God bless you both.

Owners response: We started Tall Pines a number of years ago to provide a slice of heaven for those needing some time away from the day to day struggles life often brings. We work hard to make this such a place. We have received so many wonderful comments and each one is an incredible encouragement to us. Thank you for taking the time to write of your experiences. Hopefully it will help others looking for such a property. For us, each comment is a gift that keeps on giving! Many thanks to you and the many others who have added to our on-line guestbook! What a wonderful place to stay. We really enjoyed the cabin and the land. It was fantastic that we were also able to bring along our 4-legged kids. It's just not a family vacation without them, although next time we will probably try out The Hiding Place because the stairs were a little much for our older Corgi. Very peaceful, great deck for just looking into the woods and listening to the animals. There is just nothing bad to say. Check it out!!!!

We just returned from our week long getaway at The Refuge. This a truly wonderful place. The photos and description do not do it justice. It was perfect for not only for me and my wife but our children as well. The spacious cabin allowed our children to invite a friend each that helped keep them company as the adults enjoyed the deck, hot tube, and trails. The cabin was close enough to Branson that we spent time at local attractions. We were close to lake attractions and spent time on a boat and fishing. We plan on making it a yearly event.

Wow, what a great place to stay and a great family to rent from! We were truly blessed by our stay at this property. From the very beginning Bruce and Margie took great care of our family. We selected this property right from VRBO and it is far more spectacular than we even imagined. A well crafted log cabin, with plenty of room for mom, dad, 4 children under 10, and grandma and grandpa. We had plenty of room to play games, sleep out in the screened porch, soak in the hot tub and hike around the property. It’s close enough to all the sights and sounds of Branson, yet just far enough away to enjoy the beautiful Ozark Hill nights. I hope you enjoy Tall Pines, The Refuge, and Bruce and Margie as much as we did. I know you will be hard pressed to find a vacation rental as great as this. We are already looking for a time to head back in the fall.

My family and I enjoyed the log cabin very much it was close to all the major attractions, and far enough away to enjoy the beautiful Ozark woods. We had never stayed in a real log cabin before and it was truly a geat experience. I enjoyed just staying in the log cabin and did not want to leave. The log cabin was very clean and we had lots of space for cooking, eating out side, and playing with the children. The log home was beautifully decorated and the photos in the brochure did truley reflect the appearance of the cabin and the grounds. I hope to return with my family again and I would recommend the Tall Pines. The owners were very nice and helpful with my questions. My family and I enjoyed going to Branson and Silver Dollar City.

What a wonderful place for our family's "Meet in the Middle" vacation. I loved: the tranquility, the comfortable beds, the nature sounds, the ecclectic/antique decor, the openness of the floorplan and roominess, the decks, and so much more! I can't wait to visit again in cooler temperatures, so we can fully enjoy the fireplaces, sleeping porch, hot tub, and hiking trails. The surrounding lanscape of mountains, lake and rolling meadows are breathtaking. The cabin is not far from Branson attractions, but far enough to feel lost in nature's beauty. The kitchen is wonderful... with every amenity you could need besides food. There is a small market down the street, and larger grocery stores in Branson including Super Walmart. You will need to bring handsoap as none is provided unless left by previous guests. This home is so comfortable and cozy, and because of the 3 levels you can still have your privacy (kids in the lower level while someone naps upstairs). The owners provide all the Branson brochures, a book that gives "Refuge" info, and the special "Our Story" book that gives the details and history of the making of Tall Pines. You can tell they love this place and it shows with the attention to detail! Thank you to Bruce and Margie for sharing this home, so vacationers can enjoy ~~ "Nature's Blessing!"

The Refuge is a beautiful cabin - scenery just fantastic! We enjoyed walking in the woods and listening to the birds, or relaxing in the hot tub. The teenagers took over the lower level, playing foosball, video games (we brought up an xbox-kids cant go far without games these days!), and they couldn't get over how great sleeping out on the porch is. My husband and I enjoyed having our own space upstairs -the bed was extremely comfy! The location was great - we split our time between Branson activities and exploring into Arkansas - lots to do! Thanks to Margie and Bruce for making the cabin the perfect home away from home!

December, 2009This past Christmas our family had the pleasure of staying at Tall Pines Estate for 3 nights. We had 19 in our group and used all 3 units. Our elderly parents stayed at the Hiding Place so they wouldn’t be disturbed by the late night activities. The rest of the family split up between The Sanctuary and The Refuge and the accommodations couldn’t have been more ideal. It was everything we had hoped for and more – all rooms clean and beautifully appointed. Plus, all units were completely decked out with holiday décor – Christmas trees too! We cooked, played games, relaxed in both hot tubs, stayed warm beside the deck fire at The Refuge and just enjoyed being together for the holidays. For our Christmas celebration we rented the Carriage House for a day. We gathered for breakfast that morning and invited our hosts, Bruce & Margie Gerlach, to join us. Bruce actually sat down at the piano and played Christmas carols for our entertainment! That afternoon we gathered again for another delicious meal and gift exchange. It was the perfect gathering place for our crowd, complete with adjoining kitchen facilities in The Hiding Place and a cozy fire to set the mood. Our 3 nights ended too soon and all we talked about was coming back next Christmas. Bruce & Margie, we can’t thank you enough - you made us feel so welcome and your hospitality was greatly appreciated.P.S. Several in the group posted pictures on Facebook when we got home. Many friends asked where we stayed and commented on how beautiful the place was. We like to think of Tall Pines as our secret hideaway now but sincerely hope that others will share our same experience.

The hosts were also super friendly and super accomodating. We had a couple of crises and they went out of their way to help us. A truly lovely couple. If you are looking for a peaceful get-away, this is the place to be. Tucked away in the trees, you will never want to leave. Thanks for an amazing weekend!

I just wanted to send a big thank you to both Margie and Bruce. They have created an excellent place for people to get away and refresh themselves. I enjoyed being able to experience all that Branson had to offer during the day, and then come back to the serenity of Tall Pines during the evening. My husband, Charlie, and I appreciated being able to take our dogs for walks in the wooded acreage and enjoyed all the natural beauty that surrounds the Refuge. Margie provided a list of recommendations for restaurants and activities in the Branson area. We especially enjoyed the local restaurant called Carla’s. We had an excellent breakfast for a good price. Our only difficulty was in leaving – no one wanted to go. Hopefully we will be able to return soon.

We stayed at the Refuge over New Years Eve 2009. I can't really say enough good things about this place. It is absolutely gorgeous! It exceeded all of our expectations... the pictures of the website were impressive, but in person, it was amazing. There were 6 adults and 2 dogs in our party, and everyone had a wonderful time. The owners, Margie & Bruce were extremely accommodating & friendly. The appliances & amenities are very stylish and clean. The beds were comfortable, the hot tub was wonderful, the grounds vast & secluded. We used all 3 of the fireplaces at various times, and they made the whole house warm and cozy. We will, without a doubt, be returning to this hidden gem. It was heartbreaking to leave & we seriously considered staying another day! We can't wait to see it in the summertime!

The Refuge is absolutely beautiful. We were greeted with electric candles in each window when we arrived. The home is very comfortable; the bed in the master loft is heavenly. We spent a lot of time on the deck, "listening" to the quiet of the woods (as well as the falling acorns!). The hot tub felt great after a long day of riding our motorcycles. The kitchen is well equipped for cooking. Little added touches such as coffee, a basket of snack items, and a plethora of informational brochures about the area, were much appreciated. Thanks so much for sharing your lovely home. We look forward to returning some day.

We wanted a quiet getaway before sending our two boys off to college and we transition into "empty nesters". The Refuge was so homey, comfortable and welcoming that we didn't want to leave and have vowed to return. The details that were put into this rental far surpassed any other. We loved the privacy, but one of our favorite memories will be sleeping in the screened-in sleeping porch during a rainstorm!! Thanks for sharing your lovely property with us.

The Refuge was absolutely beautiful and exceeded our expectations. The cabin was updated, clean and the grounds were also well cared for. We were as close as we wanted to be to the Branson attractions and enjoyed the quiet evenings and early mornings sitting on the deck. The lake is also very close. We had a great time and our only regret is that we did not stay longer!

This place is amazing!! We highly recommend it. It was so peaceful and had everything we could ever need. It was about 20 minutes from all the activity which was perfect. We had 10 in our group which included three under the age of three. It was the ideal amount of space for us all. Thank you Bruce and Margie for a fabulous getaway for our family!
