Beautiful B&B and a Charming Host

Review submitted: July 18, 2011   Date of arrival: June 14, 2011

The views from Birdsong are fantastic. The archetypical volcano, the jungle, and flocks of parrots were constant sites. One morning we strolled down the street and found a family of spider monkeys having breakfast in the trees! Allan is a gracious host with helpful recommendations. He introduced us to Rancho Margot where we ate and also had an amazing horse back adventure. And he pointed us to Pizza John who's a wonderful character my whole family enjoyed chatting with. Can't say enough about the breakfasts that Odelee cooked for us - best of our trip. Birdsong is pretty remote so you should be looking for peace and quiet above nightlife. Thanks for a great stay Allan!

What a View and the name fits the place to a tee

Review submitted: July 1, 2011   Date of arrival: June 4, 2011

First off, I want to say that Allan and Odolee (maid/cook) made the stay great. Allan was at breakfast each day (we stayed 7 days) and asked us our plans for the day to see if we needed help or suggestions. Several times he made phone calls for us to get our reservations. We just ran out of time and never got the chance to go to the waterfall on his property. By the way, look for more from us. My daughter has all the photos and 3 days after we got back she headed for USC to go to film school. When she gets back, there will be more on this place. I will say that if you are looking for peace and quit, this is the place to go. No phones or internet yet. It was really roughing it for my daughter (20)but she had tons of fun. We plan on putting up pictures when she gets back

So Close to the Volcano!

Review submitted: May 6, 2011   Date of arrival: April 8, 2011

I spent a few days at Birdsong and it was a great time. The views of the volcano were breathtaking. Everday I noticed bus tours coming within a few kilometers of Birdsong with groups of tourists to view Volcan Arenal. I was so happy to be so close to the volcano and not have to waste my time being bused in from someplace else. We spent a lot of time exploring the jungle and seeing all the different wildlife, monkeys, butterflies, etc. We were very close by to the ziplines that took you through the cloud forest. Allan, who owns Birdsong was very helpful and courteous. He knew the best places to visit in the area and was an excellent host. I would highly recommend staying at this beautiful property.

Second Stay at Birdsong

Review submitted: May 6, 2011   Date of arrival: April 26, 2011

This was another fantastic stay at Birdsong Villa. The owner was very helpful and friendly. It is great to have someone there who speaks English and has several connections around town for sightseeing, dining, etc. The house was amazing. You really feel a sense of adventure to be in the middle of the jungle in such a unique place. The view never gets old. Whether after staring out of the windows for the third day of your visit or even after the second stay. It's such a rewarding retreat to explore the area and have such a nice place to go back to and take it all in. The breakfast was delightful and it was nice to wake up to a tasting of the local food. You really get to experience the culture first hand. The room is very comfortable and reminds me of some of the nicer national park hotels and cabins I have stayed in.

Great potential, Poor execution

Review submitted: April 27, 2011   Date of arrival: April 22, 2011

This house was beautiful from afar with an amazing View of Arenal Volcano. However upon arrival and entry into the house the flaws were numerous. First off the Kitchen smelled like rotten food, the floors were dirty and garbage can already full and smelling as well. I will continue with kitchen, it is listed as a luxurious rental with fully equipped Kitchen. There were a couple of frying pans and 2 terrible pots along with the two catching water from the leaking sink.OK now that I have noticed I have limited words I will simply list the flaws, Ill equipped kitchen, Dirty fridge, gross garbage can, ceiling full of cob webs along with light fixtures, Jacuzzi tub full of ants and centipedes, Leaky upstairs toilet, Dog feces in the outdoor shower, Mosquito Larva in the waterfall, owners effects everywhere as he lives there if it's not rented, No cleaning service,No WiFi, landscaping in bad order, Hand rails deteriorated, missing light bulbs in which we had to buy, outside gutters moldy, down stairs bathroom smelled of feces and sink drain of rotten food and mold, dirty windows, open spaces for bugs to enter house which was full of them.owners dog lives at the house.regular shower upstairs leaks to sink area, door to toilet does not close, had to hold microwave door shut to operate it. He underpays his staff by local standards, the business is illegally run, he has no Insurance nor pays for his employees Insurance which is Costa Rican LAW. This guy is City Slicker from NY giving Americans a bad name to the locals of Costa Rica. I would avoit this house at all costs. Has a million dollar view but it's illegal, there is no binding paperwork or contract for stay. BEWARE!!!!!!!!

Owners response: I could get down in the dirt the same as this reviewer but the false review was because all this family wanted was to rip me off after staying 4 days in the house. They held me up for a refund even though they had a good time.I was afraid they were going to damage my place. There is always one like them once in awhile.

Personal touch

Review submitted: April 27, 2010   Date of arrival: March 14, 2010

Our family stayed at Birdsong for two nights on our first journey to Costa Rica. By the time we left, we had dubbed the owner "Tio Allen" because we felt like we had acquired a new member of the family. He took us to the nearby waterfall on horseback, took the kids on his 4-wheeler, introduced them to his neighbor's chihuahua puppies, etc. The neighbor, Odele, also made us wonderful breakfasts.

The view from the house was amazing - or would have been if the weather had cooperated. You can see the lake, the volcano (lava side) and the rain forest.

Would recommend a 4 wheel drive vehicle, as it is off the beaten path and up a steep bumpy hill.

A real adventure!
