We stayed for 10 wonderful days and enjoyed the whales everyday and the turtles the pods of dolphins that went by and gave us a show almost everyday. Watching the guys in the water spear fishing and giving us fresh fish was awesome. We had heard that is always rains on the Hilo side well that wasn't the case we only had rain one night . The valcaon at night is a sight to see. Our only complaint is we had to leave. Hope to be back soon. Thanks for sharing your home with us.

Perfect and Perfect!
Review submitted: March 18, 2013 Date of arrival: March 11, 2013
Perfect and perfect! Thank you - Mahalo. Little rain at first - windy offering stunning crashing waves of beautiful colors. 2 turtles almost everyday - Franklin and Bob. Today is calm - so many whales we have lost count. No breeching today but Mom and baby pickle breeching other days. Didn't believe the previous comment of hearing the whales. We have heard them for 3 nites in a row - Wow! Sounds like a cow mooing but louder, lower & slower - pretty amazing. We only heard them after dark sitting on the deck. Baby just breeched!! Yeah! Lovely home. Great snorkel gear. PS Directions were perfect - communication along the way awesome - advice for groceries perfect - gift basket very thoughtful & appreciated.

Thanks for the Home Away from Home
Review submitted: March 18, 2013 Date of arrival: February 28, 2013
We very much enjoyed our stay here in Hilo at your beautiful house. It was a perfect venture point for our adventures into the volcano park, Hilo town and other smaller towns nearby. It is a lovely house, very clean and comfortable - particularly the beds. The pounding surf was very soothing. You have the most beautiful lanai. we spent a significant portion of our time here sipping coffee in the am, eating meals and just gazing out into the ocean from it. Thanks for the home away from home.

A Lovely Place to "Come Home To"
Review submitted: March 18, 2013 Date of arrival: February 24, 2013
We had heard it would be rainy in Hilo, but didn't quite expect the 12" we got during our stay. We are from near Seattle, tho, so we already knew you just do things in the rain. The surf watching was most enjoyable - the power of the ocean asit pounded against the lava walls was hears-stopping at times. We found ourselves standing on the lanai just watching for long periods of time. Mika Kai was a lovely place to "come home to" in the evenings...

Lovely Location
Review submitted: March 18, 2013 Date of arrival: February 17, 2013
We thoroughly enjoyed our brief stay. We've never stayed in a home so will stocked! The crashing waves, chirping frogs, rustling palms and spraying mists all delighted the senses. We heard a whale "moving" about 50 yards from the shore. Could hear the spouting also of 1 of the three. How thrilling. Saw many others farther out and turtle as well. The first night we enjoyed star gazing from the hot tub. The second night we think it rained half the annual rainfall! Such a lovely location. Hope we can return someday. Thanks for the basket of goodies and fresh flowers.

Wonderful Stay
Review submitted: March 18, 2013 Date of arrival: February 22, 2013
We loved the view and sound/smell of ocean, snorkling in the marine preserve down the street, Volcanoes National Park, and being here in such a beautiful place together. I really appreciated all your excellent and prompt responses throughout the rental process.
We loved our vacation house and found it extremely well appointed. We ate in every night and found nothing wanting. We did lose hot water overnight one night but it was timely repaired so we only had cold showers one morning. Love the patio for coffee watching the sun come up! Absolutely love that there are an abundance of towels and that there was plenty of paper product provided. Look forward to returning in the future.
This is the third time we've had the pleasure to stay here. Always wonderful and fun! Thanks for the place, the hospitality and the mahalo!

We've never stayed at an ocean front property so close to the ocean. Enjoyed getting up in the morning and having a cup of coffee while watching the sea turtles swim in the surf. The house was very roomy, inviting, comfortable and well stocked. Had everything as advertised. We were there for my birthday and were greeted with a basket full of wine, coffee and other goodies.
Our favorite snorkeling spot was only about 10 miles away-Kapoho tide pools. Many fish and a turtle. Easy to snorkel, very clear and no surf to contend with. There is a lot to see and do in the Puna and HIlo area. Some of best scenery was driving up the east coast and taking back roads in Puna. We were there during a week of rather high surf and rain in Hilo area so headed to Kona side for some day trips. A bit of a drive, but lots to see along the way. A great memory is driving back after dark and stopping to watch the volcano glow. Thank you Jamie for sharing your home with us!

Great place! Lots of room and one of the best equipped rental houses we've ever stayed in. They had everything -- from every gadget and spice for making a full thanksgiving meal to beach towels, snorkel gear and ice chests for outings. We loved Hilo area -- very lush and very laid back with unique buildings and gift stores and lots of things to see and do.

So Peaceful & Relaxing

Review submitted: November 1, 2012
Date of arrival: October 16, 2012
The most peaceful place we have stayed in Hawaii. So many unexpected ammenities. When Jamie stated it was fully furnished and stocked - it was. It was like moving one's home to Hawaii and you lacked nothing. Owners were most hospitable and see that every need is met (they even bought a crock pot for us) so you can enjoy your vacation to the max. There is a delightful caretaker nearby who answers his phone immediately if you have any questions or problems. Always felt very safe and secure. My bed upstairs was like sleeping on a cloud with the birds, crickets and ocean at night lulling me to sleep. The deposit was returned within 3 days of our return. Cannot recommend this rental enough. It could definitely use a 10 star rating.

We had such a wonderful time here "Heaven on Earth".
We used every space in the house (pool, hot tub, master
bath tub, lanai...). A perfect spot.
We ventured to the other side of the island for a day.
Visited the Champagne Pond, Tidal pools Kapoho (best
snorkeling ever, best ever done and we have been to all of
the places).
There's a great restaurant in Pahoa called "Kaleo".
Thanks so much!!

Unwinding After Intense Kumu Hula Training in God's Place

Review submitted: July 19, 2012
Date of arrival: May 23, 2012
This property is truly God's place! After a week-long intense training and hula graduation, I needed a place to rest and appreciate the beauty of the aina (land). This home was so well appointed with everything you would ever need for the comforts of home. The rooms were very spacious and the beds comfortable...more comfortable than my own mattress! The house was very clean and every detail was covered. Adan was always available if we needed anything. The view was absolutely spectacular. My family and I thoroughly enjoyed sitting on the lanai for our meals and drinks. The jacuzzi was the first place I hit after my week of hula. We enjoyed the pool immensely. Mostly, we enjoyed being right by the ocean and waking up to the crashing waves. Jamie was extremely accommodating as our dates changed several times because of our schedules. The pictures really don't do this house justice. We enjoyed taking walks along the roads by the house and meeting all the friendly neighbors. My family and I would come back to this house in a heartbeat! Mahalo nui loa Jamie for a wonderful stay! Aloha ke Akua!

Wonderful view right off the back deck, we saw turtles in
the waves every day.
If you're here on Sunday, turn south once you get back
onto the highway from Makuu Drive to go to a great farmer's
market. Plan on eating lunch there. We also loved Cafe
Pesto and Short & Sweet in Hilo to dine. Walking in the
park along Banyan Drive was also a hit.

Your kitchen was very well stocked, and David, who is an excellent cook, made me some wonderful breakfasts and dinners there! We had such a wonderful week at your home, and we are definitely planning on returning. We thought that next time we would bring my parents or another couple with us. This time, it was an anniversary celebration just for the two of us!

We would like to thank you for our outstanding couple of weeks ar Mika Kai. It was one of the most memorable vacations we have ever taken, thanks to such a beautiful house in a wonderful setting. The friends and family members who visited during our stay were equally enchanted.
Compliments on the three-ring binder of house and area information. It was a treasure trove. I would recommend that all of your guests read it carefully. As promised, we found the house was very well set up and supplied

Our expectations were high after reading all the glowing reviews of this property. And incredibly enough, our expectations were exceeded! I used to work for a destination club, so I have a lot of experience with high end vacation homes. This property could have easily been in our portfolio. The house was very comfortable, well-kept and met our needs nicely. It was outfitted extremely well, both in the kitchen and general amenities. And the views from the back deck were just stunning (tons of sea turtles). And perhaps the best part was the amazing weather we had during our stay - sunny skies every day! You will not be disappointed with this property, and for the cost, it's an absolute steal! Be sure to check out the Kapoho tide pools nearby - incredible snorkeling!

We have spent a wonderful week here w/ our hula sisters. We enjoyed the beautiful setting of Mika Kai & all its amenities. It was a wonderful place to rest during the busy week of the Merrie Monarch Festival. And we were fortunate enough to see whales off the coast. Thank you for providing a great setting for magical memories.

the best places to stay in these Islands
Review submitted: January 5, 2012 Date of arrival: April 23, 2010
We now head to Kailua for another 5 days but we will cherish the memories of our stay here. The house was a perfect fit for us. The pool, the hottub, the space, the fenced yard, everything was just perfect. I especially enjoyed sitting out on the deck and playing slack key guitar as the waves crashed against the lava.
We will be back next year for another stay. And both of us think this is one of the best places to stay in these Islands.

We gathered on the Big Island to be with my mom during her last year of life in 2009. We needed a place to come together as a family. Cousins from the Mainland joined our relatives from Australia. We had all our arrangements made. But when we arrived it turned out the house we had rented had mould problems.
Luckily the agent was able to move us to Mika Kai. What a place! We saw whales, basked in the pool and hot tub and cooked meals in the spacious kitchen. We make music, talk story, the whole thing was perfect. We would gladly return. Thanks so much to the owners for their hospitality and support. It really helped us out.

After the loss of my mother, our family chose to continue with our plans for a family vacation. This home is stunning and extremely comfortable. They have everything that you need! Our evenings were spent listening to the birds and wildlife and days by the pool and exploring the Island. We had 10 people; including 3 children 4, 6, and 9 and at no time did you feel crowded.
Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful home and making our first trip to Hawaii wonderful - we hope to return some day.

Thank you from the bottom of our heart for a Fabulous week
at Mika Kai. Coming from a chilly Tasmanian winter, we have
thawed beautifully & relaxed totally! We love the Big
Island. We drove around to Kailua Kona, but were very glad
we chose this side of the Big Island to stay.
We loved the bikes & rode along the beach road a few
times. Also loved all the comforts - plenty of everything.
So much more family friendly than a condo. We enjoyed
cooking in the great kitchen & on the BBQ & have tried lots
of fish & foods we don't see at home.
Altogether a magical week. Something we will remember for
a very long time to come!
From one island family to another, thank you - mahalo!

Whales every day, turtles that we lost count of
Review submitted: September 19, 2011 Date of arrival: March 3, 2011
Having never been to Hawaii before, we were very excited about our visit. We hoped that the on line pictures were accurate about your home. It was everything we could have hoped for! Whales every day, turtles that we lost count of, and a two day high surf advisary that gave us waves that crashed onto our shore that you couldn't imagine! Awesome. We haven't felt peace, quiet, and relaxation like we did here except up in the wilderness of Northern Saskatchawan(but with far fewer bugs here). Thank you so much for giving our first trip to the islands memories that we will keep forever.

Aloha, We were awestruck upon our arrival at the front gate
of Mika Kai! Visiting your grand domain paradise became
more wonderful every step of our stay. We planned this
vacation last summer and it has exceeded our expectations.
The internet doesn't do Mika Kai justice. What a beautiful
and enchanted property. You have thought of almost
everything. This is our third trip to the Hawaiian Islands,
first on the Big Island. Your calm breezes, magnificent
thunder of the surf, intense sunlight, majestic clouds, and
gentle rain showers are soothing to the soul. Brilliant
color abounds in the flora and fauna. The affectionate
serenade of the birds and frogs create a theraputic
tranquility. We are saddended to leave this haven called
Mika Kai, but life goes on. You will be in our hearts and
in our minds, hoping to return again someday! Mahalo.

Wonderful home and all the amenities

Hello Jamie,
Thank you for a wonderful home and all the amenities as
well. The garage was perfect to store our bikes when not
using them, the filtered water was a blessing as well. We
are serious riders but not Pros like in the TDF. Mauna Kea
was sheer brutality on the body , mind and spirit but to
complete such a climb is so special, the feeling spiritual.
7 hours in the saddle. We started at the Zero marker in
Hilo, go to the Saddleback in a little over 3 hours , made
that right turn up to Mauna Kea.. Breath taking sunset... We
are now in Maui for tomorrows climb up Haleakala.. Heading
home on Monday...
Thanks again for the views, the comfortable beds, all the
extras and some nice cool rain :))

Special Honeymoon
Review submitted: July 5, 2011 Date of arrival: July 4, 2011
What a wonderful stay! We'd wake up early before the sunrise, soak in the hot tub until second breakfast, and swim with the fish in the late afternoon at high tide. Some of the most incredible sights were the new black sand beach at Kalapana, driving around the mouth of Kilauea, and the stargazing at Mauna Kea visitor center. We had a wonderful time. Thanks for sharing your house with us and making our honeymoon so special!

What a wonderful time we had at Mika Kai.
Our host were thoughtful as we were greeted upon arrival with a basket of goodies left for us on the table.
We were able to view and enjoy the sights (sea turtles and whales) right from the back deck. The grounds were quite beautiful as well with mature trees and and plenty of hibiscus in constant bloom. It was our bit of paradise!
The home was well stocked with everything from pool toys, snorkel gear, lanterns, bicylces right down to the spices in the kitchen cabinet. You don't get that with a time share.
My entire family has been talking about our experience with our friends since we came home and we all highly recommend Mika Kai and the Aloha spirit of it's owners.
We definitely look forward to the day when we can all return again.

What a wonderful stay in Paradise--The beauty and comfort of Mika Kai made our vacation. With all of the wonderful sights and sounds here, it was hard to leave and explore all of the other wonders of the big island, but we did and enjoyed the adventure on going north on both coasts. And the excitement to the senses continued for all of our time here especially with the tsunami warning and our race to higher ground. What an adventure our whole week here was and we Thank You for providing this beautiful home for our staying pleasure. I hope our journey finds us here again some day. Mahalo.

This was our first trip to Hawaii, and all others will be judged by this place. We arrived at night so had no idea how close to the ocean we actually were. The house was magnificent, and came with enough snorkel gear for all five of us to make use of. Bikes, a beautiful kitchen, near the end of the road, the peace and quiet, the list goes on and on. Oh, and the turtles and whales that you can watch right off the lanai!! Thank you for a fantastic introduction to the Big Island Jamie.

We stayed at Mika Kai for 5 nights and it was too short to explore this side of the Island. The house is wonderful and we were amazed by all the little touches (pool toys, snorkle equipment, coolers, chairs, wonderfully stocked kitchen, guide books, movies, books for young kids, pack n'play, flashlights for walk to lava viewing, bug spray.... you name it- it's there). House is great for kids too as the whole yard is fenced so there was no fear that they could sneak out/wander off and get too close to the ocean. We hadn't thought too much about this concern (pool was a bigger concern) until we got there- it was a HUGE relief! The sound of the frogs at night was amazing. Nice to have a quiet dirt road to take walks on. Having a computer there was wonderful too as you could put "time in at the office" if you wanted to. Management company was really responsive and on top of things. We will be back for sure!
