Unit #512 is on the very end, the 5th of 6 floors. It's quiet and peaceful, with the only noise the lightly crashing waves and softly blowing palm trees below our window. The condo looked like the listing photos, was very clean and well maintained. The sub-zero refrigerator is incredible, living room furniture nice and comfortable, and beach amenities very helpful (chairs, cooler and 2 umbrellas, although one umbrella was broken, and plenty of beach towels).
The Island Sands complex is very nice (love the koi pond!), parking is easy, the pool is small but very pretty and peaceful. With the wonderful Tradewinds in the afternoon, it can get cool (October) and it would have been nice to have a jacuzzi (the big grassy area in the corner is begging for one). The gas grills looked old and didn't encourage me to try them out.
My only problem with the condo, and what would make me not recommend it to a friend or relative, were the beds, pillows and sheets. The beds were hard as a rock, the pillows stiff, unyielding foam, and the sheets were pilled and uncomfortable on bare skin in the sticky heat (we didn't use the A/C to save energy). My mom said one of the spare bedroom sheets wouldn't stay on the bed so she ended up fighting it all night.
This may not be critical to some people, but a good, comfortable night's sleep is essential to me and nobody in our party of three slept well. Adding memory foam toppers and comfortable pillows would go a long, long way. Also, it really needs a shade screen on the patio to block the bright a.m. sun -- without it, the living room is essentially unusable in the morning, even with sunglasses on!
I'm giving this unit an average rating only because of the poor sleep experiences. This is easily fixable if the owner chooses to do so. It's a beautiful condo, great location, gorgeous views, and the owner obviously put a lot of attention into the decor. I'd definitely want to stay there again if the beds/pillows were upgraded.
Also, Stephanie Stark, the concierge, was wonderful to work with!

JoAnn,
We love your condo and enjoyed meeting you at the Luau, It was a great time. The road to Hana was unforgettable. After long days exploring all that Maui has to offer, relaxing on the balcony to the sounds of the waves rolling in and out was the perfect way to end the day. Mahalo!

Spent a week at this condo with my Family. Condo was spacious and nicely decorated. Would stay on the Khiea side on our next visit as it is not as windy.

The solitude, privacy, spaciousness and incredible views only touch the surface of the things that make this condo so perfect for your Maui visit. The Ma'alaea location is ideal for going to/from both sides of the island. The unit itself is excellently appointed with your every need considered, truly.

A Beautiful Place!

Aloha,
Thanks for a wonderful ending to our week in Maui! Time just disappears when you’re here. The views every morning and evening off the lanai are spectacular! We traveled all over the island this week and enjoyed three successful whale watches. Many thanks to the Scotch Mist II in Lahaina and to the Alii Nui and the PWF Voyager in Ma’alaea! Hope to see you again next whale season! Thanks for a beautiful place!

Aloha,
We had an amazing Maui experience! Nine days of fabulous paradise. Condo was very clean & very nicely decorated. We would highly recommend staying here! Stephanie Stark was very helpful & quickly answered any questions. The 2 lanais with ocean views simply amazing! The scenery, sunrises, sunsets were breathtaking. Activities included sugar cane train, theatre performance, Wailea Marriott Luau, Sunrise Helicopter 1 hour tour, which we would highly recommend. Drove the winey or curvy road to Hana & stopped at Garden of Eden. Mahalo for making our visit most memorable& comfortable with this awesome condo! Visted Ka’anapali Lahaina, Kihei, Ma’alaea, Wailea,Pa’ia, Hana, & Wailuku-Very favorite places Ka’anapali&Lahaina. Try Kimo’s for dinner& hula pic!
Peace & Blessings

Enjoyed the Location!
Review submitted: June 25, 2012 Date of arrival: March 19, 2012
Aloha!
What a comfy place to decompress but still has a way of flying even when you’re relaxing. Enjoyed the location and especially the improvisational whale shows right in front of the lanai every morning! And an especially beautiful grand finale this evening was featuring a mom and her very quick study of a calf who performed for about 20 minutes as they made their way through the harbor-fins slapping, baby breaching, just beautiful. Thank you JoAnn!

The views from the lanai are great!

Aloha,
We truly enjoyed our stay in your condo. The layout of the condo is great with the split bedroom design. The views from the lanai are great… especially during whale season. We saw so many whales we couldn’t watch all of them. We ate at Beach Bums….a lot , good food & reasonable. We also ate at Buzz’s Warf, also good food. We appreciate you letting us stay in your condo. Everyone we met here was very friendly & helpful. We also recommend the Pacific Whale Foundation to any and all who may be interested in going on whale watches. They are a very professional group. Mahalo!

Thank you so much for helping my wonderful husband with this lovely condo. We had such an amazing time. It is right in the middle of everything. We spent a lot of time at Beach Bums. The food was really good, reasonable and plentiful. Knowing it is snowing in Albuquerque right now made it even more special. God Bless

We rented this condo and shared it with another couple! What a fabulous week! The condo had plenty of space for all of us. The breeze flowing through the condo all day long was fantastic. We never had to put the A/C on all week! Going to bed and waking up to the sound of crashing waves was wonderful! It was centrally located for all of our day trips which made it nice. A pool to relax in at the end of the day! I will definitely recommend this to any of my friends or family traveling to Maui. The view is fantastic! Thanks again for sharing your little bit of paradise with us!!

We've spent our summer traveling the Islands, as we did last year, and I find this place to be the best of both worlds - quiet and private feeling with the soothing, tranquil ocean to lull you, yet close enough to all conveniences ( like movie theaters, restaurants, malls, grocery stores, etc.) It is very well-appointed and comfy, as well. We're having a wonderful time!

We have used VRBO concept for 3 vacations now.... we have never been disappointed. We spent 15 days on 3 islands with the Maalaea condo sandwiched between houses on Oahu and Kauai. At first we were apprehensive about a 5th story condo. That quickly changed when we arrived to a beautifully appointed condo with a STUNNING view. The height above the bay allowed for great whale watching. Maalaea site allowed quick access to all points on the island. A five minute walk to an unending beach or the harbor for snorkeling trips made it perfect. Thanks to the thoughtful owners of this property, we had all the accessories needed....beach mats, umbrellas, coolers, laundry supplies.
