My husband and i wanted to celebrate our 4th anniversary as an opportunity to relax! He manages full-time at a major nationwide home improvement chain, and i work three jobs. We both enjoy casino gambling (in moderation) and decided we would go to Turtle Lake, WI, and eat dinner at their grand buffet, gamble, and then stay someplace special without the kids (we have 3) just to have some quality time together. I was great! It went exactly the way we wanted and we did not mind the weather because it was the intimate setting we were looking forward to in the first place. We saw the house was stocked full of activities for both kids and grown ups, but we have netflix and the house had wi-fi. So that was all we needed for the night.

Wow, what a place. The minute we got there we felt all our stresses vanish. It was as though the tall trees and solitude were magnets, pulling all our worries away. The master bedroom has a tempurpedic king bed and a fireplace so we slept very soundly. The silence was almost deafening. If you need "white sound" there are fans to help with that.
All in all we recommend this to anyone looking for some peace and quiet.

We were wanting to get away from it all so we chose this little escape for a weekend. All the fall colors were at their peak and this just made the drive and the stay that much more beautiful. My husband is very outdoor type, so he got out and hiked around and was amazed how much it felt "away from it all" so close to the cities.
We were very thankful to the owners for sharing their little house with us.

1 week stay - enjoyable

My family of 4 spent a week here -
-The house was clean - not the best looking from the outside but who cares...
-The location of the house was great. Very quiet, yet convienient to everything (including Twin Cities).
-Kitchen was nicely supplied - all the stuff a family would need except a manual can opener (the battery operated one was dead) and a another 10" fry pan would be nice.
-Grill worked well except the side burner wouldn't stay lit most of the time. A cleaning brush would be nice.
-The kids toys, movies, and games were a great addition.
-The picnic table and tree swing were nice.
-The canoe and kayaks were handy.
-Fire pit was nice, but I was under the impression there was real firewood on site. I didn't mind collecting the sticks but without real logs it's hard. I wouldn't have minded purchasing some but the sites were clear that it was provided.
-Maybe this varies from year to year, but we found the "beach" useless for swimming. Mucky and full of weeds all the way out and past the raft. Just be honest about this detail. Perch lake was close and nice for swimming except for the fee of $7. The River in Hudson, WI was nice too.
There were a few thing that need finishing in the house - clearly it's been remodeled but isn't totally done.
Grouting
Install smoke detectors (and eliminate the wires hanging from the walls - that's code).
Fix broken tiles
Get a dresser for the master bedroom that the drawers stay in the guides. It's useless now.
Lock for front door (we didn't care but others will)

what can i say? this year was so horrible for so many people in our country for so many reasons. i understand that it was the worst drought in history since the depression era dust bowl in the mid-west. wisconsin asphalt buckled, lamp posts in oklahoma were melting, and here in minnesota, we held vigils for our greatest resource, fresh water fishing.
minnesota has more shoreline than california, florida and texas combined. and do not forget those estimated 10,000-15,000 lakes we love so much that our culture revolves around so much!
the perch and walleye cannot tolerate heat and are a cold water fish up here in the northern states. bass lake was no exception to the state wide suffering the lakes had to endure this summer.
at the beginning of summer the lake level crested the top of the tire that our dock rolls upon. at the very end of the same summer the water level had dropped ~ 18" or to the bottom edge of that same tire. so sad but, with evaporation like that no lake is going to be immune to damage of that magnitude and as such there was no way to find any different.
when i wrote up the web-site one year ago i got rave reviews both in the online advertizing and verbal reports back to me and the handwritten notes guests leave behind for me that i laminate and keep in a permanent place at the cabin for your viewing.
it seems so trajec that just one summer ago my guests loved the water that the lake offered and could not seem to get enough of it. they wrote all about their experience of bass lake and it is all there for you to read with your own eyes. i was so happy to hear their love of the lake water and to feel that way with them too.
oh... how we are hoping here that this is not a sign of what is to come...a permanent change to our beloved lakes. and what would become of them? well to start with farmers would loose the watering holes that keep their dairy cattle healthy. they would dry up and grass would fill the dib bit. lakes would turn into wet-lands (good for reproduction habitat not not much more). water skiing would be impossible because all of the large lakes would become much smaller ones. no doubt there would be less fish as there is much less water for them to live.
even now as i write this the people that live around white bear lake grieve their loss
of a once thriving living body of water has been reduced to massive mud flats visible from aerial view. so think rain!
