What can be added to the previous glowing reviews of this wonderful vacation place! After leaving the crowds and noise of the city, this was the perfect place to end our anniversary getaway. If you are looking for perfect solitude, sweeping vistas of mesas, distant mountain ranges, blue-green lakes, and nothing but the relaxing sounds of the breezes passing by, an occasional bird, and (during this time of year) the rumble of distant thunder in the afternoons, this is the place! We would have simply stayed here quite a bit longer but there were others coming after us of course...
The owners of Vista de Lago were very helpful in providing us with a list of places to visit in the area, but after arriving here, we simply decided to make this our home for 3 days and take full advantage of everything it had to offer.
There is a nice flat screen TV and Blu-Ray player, but why would one want to use any of these? Just look out the windows! The views are breathtaking, and each time of day, from dawn, through noon and evening time, presents an entirely different mood. There is really no reason to go anywhere else, if magnificent scenery, beautiful skies, ultra comfort and solitude is what you are seeking.
If side trips are a must, I would suggest hiking over at Chost Ranch (which you can see nestled in the pink and red cliffs due north from Vista), as well as a tour through their nice museums, and a walk around the labyrinth. The 2 hour hike to the top of the Chimney Rock trail is worth the view and the workout--plan for early morning or later afternoon if it is hot. And of course the Abiquiu Inn for lunch, dinner, or just a refreshing glass of rosemary lemonade!
Thanks to Larry and Laurie for sharing their beautiful site...we hope to return next year.

When I spoke with Larry, before booking this utterly amazing little paradise, he warned me that people always told him that the hardest part of staying there was leaving. He failed to tell me that when you do leave, you leave part of your heart there! This is more than a place...it is an emotional experience! So magnificent a spot, that you become one with the beauty that surrounds you. It is astonishing! Finding the place is a bit of adventure. You begin to feel that you are venturing into a no man's land as you follow the perfect directions that take you over the Chama River, where you get your first glimpse of Lake Abiquiu and continue on until Cerro Pedernal fills your sight with her majesty. You continue to follow the directions that take you onto a small road, that then leads you .."over the cattle grate and sharp turn till the mailboxes",and just when you are wondering "where on earth are we headed?"... you finally approach.. through the iron gates, where you are about to first see the beautiful Casita... sitting proudly on it's perch on top of a mesa. It is at this spot that you realize that something special is about to happen to you. Larry and Laurie are very thoughtful and really want you to enjoy your stay...and you cannot help but do that. When I told Larry that I had rented a small compact car, he urged me to get a small SUV. I was very grateful for that advice. We ventured to Plaza Blanca, Ghost Ranch, the road to the Monastery in the Desert and countless small dirt and back roads, as we explored the area. We searched for sites we remembered from the paintings of Georgia O'Keeffe, and visited her home in Abiquiu. The SUV made these adventures much easier and doable. The Casita itself is just lovely. It is thoughtfully designed to take advantage of it's wonderful site and curves around the views. The ceiling beams, the portal design, even the curve of the floor.. follow the vista. The night sky will be something you will not soon forget. The interior lovely..including a freestanding modern deep tub with a view that only needs a frame for it to hang in a museum. If you are lucky enough to find yourself headed in this direction and lucky enough to be able to book time in this little wonder..please go...you will be very glad you did. Thank you Larry and Laurie, we followed all your advice..even venturing to Cuba to eat in your favorite restaurant, El Bruno. You were right, Larry..just like the others before us...we did not want to leave!

Owners response: Enid...you are always welcome back to Vista de Lago. Your kind words are clearly heartfelt, and we now share between us that understanding of how difficult it is to leave our little slice of heaven once you're there. Be well ;-)

If you are looking for peace and quiet, this is your place. My wife and I just spent 3 wonderful days at Vista de Lago and are already looking forward to our next visit. If possible, the owner's descriptions and pictures undersale the property. We could not have been more satisfied with the accommodations or the property condition. It is obvious the owners take great pride in this home. We spent most of a day at nearby Bandelier National Monument and would highly recommend if you are up for a little hiking. Hope to ride the train at Chama next trip. My only negative comment (not Larry or Laurie's fault) would be the casita has cell phone reception, but if you are lucky to have an off switch like mine, you can quickly fix that problem.
We did eat at the restaurant recommended by the owners in Cuba and very much enjoyed our dinner. Very unexpected for such a small town. We also had pizza at a little place south( by little, I mean the entire space is smaller than a 2 car garage) of Abiquiu on the side of the road-Mamacita's Pizza. Very interesting character owner and only employee. Stop in Santa Fe, get plenty of wine, a bag of chips and sit on the covered porch and forget about your job, or your kids or whatever problems you may have and enjoy the solitude.

Abiquiu was one astonishment after another--we couldn't have envisioned a deeper or more enthralling experience. Thank you, Laurie and Larry, for the use of your beautiful house. The photos give only a hint of the magnificence. We took several area trips--don't miss Plaza Blanca--which were wonderful, but had perhaps the most meaningful explorations right at the mesa. Walking the bed of the wash, gathering chert, arrowheads, unusual rocks, and bringing our treasure back up to the house, sitting out under the stars, watching the cloud shadows run over the mountains, watching the red rocks double themselves in the lake. And the quiet. True quiet, true darkness. And then sunrise and mountain bluebirds! Magnificent.

This was exactly what we were looking for--relaxing, quiet, and a perfect escape into gorgeous country. The home was comfortable and complete with little details that made us feel welcome (hiking sticks, guide books). The kitchen was stocked with the equipment and utensils we needed to make great meals. The pull-out bed in the living room is the most comfortable pull-out bed I have slept in--I believe it's memory foam. The only part that is a little hard to understand regarding sleeping arrangements as described on the website is the 2nd sleeping option in the living room. It's actually a couch (a comfortable couch). Also, travelers should be aware that not all vehicles will have an easy time making it up the hill. Ask Larry and Laurie about this prior to your trip.
Larry was wonderful to correspond with, even though I did not have time to connect much with him prior to the trip. Everything was lovely. Thank you for sharing your home! Would definitely recommend this place to those looking for a quiet escape.

Owners response: So glad that you found our home as comfortable as we do. BTW: Our Website indicates a maximum of 6 people using 3 Queen beds, one each in the Master BR, the Second BR, and then a Queen Sleeper Sofa in the LR. I'll try to amend the language on the site that may lead anyone to believe there is a 4th sleeping surface. You are a welcome guest in our home...hope to see you again Laurie.

There is no place like this to which we have ever been. We needed more time. The effect Vista del Lago and the surrounding beauty has upon your heart mind and soul is indescribable. The siting of the house is magnificent, the view is so permanent but yet never the same. THe stars.....dizzying. The owners of Vista del Lago have made a beautiful getaway complete with everything you need, including binoculars. The kitchen outfitted wonderfully, bathroom and soaking tub are fabulous with the stars above. Hiking all over the place.
The light dusting of snow was a real treat! We wanted to get snowed in. We were very lucky to find this place! We will be back - next time for at least a week!

This house was fabulous. I was skeptical prior to arrival that it would be as wonderful as the pictures depicted, but I could not have been more pleased. The home was immaculate and the views simply awe inspiring. We especially enjoyed the radiant heating in the concrete floors, what a wonderful thing to walk on warm floors while looking outside at the snow! My family of 4 was quite comfortable in this house. The owners made the rental process very painless and easy. Hiking at nearby Ghost Ranch was fabulous. We are already looking at our schedules to find time to come back to this home.

Vista de Lago is likely many things to many guests. Two of us, Jeff and Barb, are Santa Fe, NM residents who found Vista de Lago during a web search for "water recreation Colorado". Go figure. The unexpected finding was a chance step toward a grand experience as deep into the recess of mind as the volume of space surrounding Vista de Lago is expansive.
While the name translates to 'view of the lake', Abiquiu Lake is only a starting point when considering the rich natural context in which Vista de Lago is set.
The casa, the house itself, is a beautiful and wonderful construction. Vista de Lago however, is much more than that. Our stay became an ethereal one, every bit as transcendent as the casa's foundation is physical.
We decided that once we arrived, we would not get back in the car until it was time to leave. It was easy to do. We made all our meals there, hung out there, took short walks around there, and were blown away there.
Our three days and two nights were spent completely out of our normal space-time, in a place of all space and no time. We were in no named place. Our days there were no days of the week. Issues fell away. Identities faded. We merged with land and sky.
Our stay at Vista-Desde-la-Mente was an introspective adventure, a view-from-the-mind. Sitting on the very prow of the mesa point on which the casa is perched, one can and easily does get lost in thought, or simply lost as you peer unfocused into an enormity of undulating topography and vibrant light and indescribable heaven and baby let your mind roll on.
Speculate on cycles of day-to-night-to-dawn-to-dusk, over and over, and how the landscape around you may have changed, or not, over millions of days, perhaps just like today, or not. At Vista-del-Cuervo-Altisimo, you need not leave the porch to imagine the view-of-a-soaring-raven as it cruises through your field of vision and over a vast earth from its domain in the firmament.
If you're lucky enough to be at Vista-de-la-Cambiante-Luz during some dynamic cloud drama, you're likely to succumb to the view-of-the-changing-light. Time will pass, but you won't be aware of it; and you can't take your eyes away from the dance of the light play.
Our stay at Vista de Lago imbued us with tranquilidad de espiritu, with peace of mind. With cabezas en las nubes, our heads in the clouds, the toughest moment was returning to ourselves, getting back in that car and leaving. Renewed, however. Vista de Lago did it. And we'll be back.

Vista del Lago - Heaven on a Mesa

My sister and I had the wonderful luck to stay at Vista del Lago for 4 nights recently. It was a wonderful, wonderful experience.
The views take your breath away and fill your eyes and heart with beauty; the serenity, solitude and silence fill your soul. The stars at night fill the sky from horizon to horizon, filling your mind with wonder.
The house sits atop a mesa, blending seamlessly with its surroundings, with amazing views in every direction. The drive from the main road makes you feel adventuresome and is just long enough to tantalize you with a question: what will Vista del Lago really be like?
The short answer: spectacular.
The longer answer: it is all that is promised on the website - and more.
The round portal and the corresponding wall of windows are unique to this home and bring 180 degrees of magnificent view to your eyes the minute you walk into the house and keep it there while you cook, daydream and just while away the day, enjoying life. Watching the sunlight and shadow play on the landscape - which seems to stretch forever - is endlessly fascinating.
It is apparent that the owners love this property in the care they have taken in furnishing and maintaining it. All the necessities are there, throughout the house.
But the little extra touches speak to the owners desire that you have a wonderful and carefree stay in their piece of heaven. Extra touches like lots of Kleenex and paper towels, candles to set a mood, a flashlight on the front porch so you can easily open the lockbox when you arrive, a chimney for lighting your charcoal for your barbecue- all of these make your stay there more pleasurable and reflect the owners care for your enjoyment.
We are not just wishing we could go back; we have already reserved a spot in May to share this extraordinary spot with good friends. I hope that you are fortunate enough to have your own time in this piece of heaven too.

Owners response: Yes, we love our little slice of Heaven, and we love sharing it with wonderful people like you. We're happy to have you back soon and often ;-) Larry and Laurie

Expectations can bedevil a vacation. Often rentals use what we call "creative photography" to make a property look impossibly wonderful.,,,, leading to disappointment. As good as Vista del Lago photos seem, they do nothing to prepare you for its reality. Ansel Adams would have trouble doing this place & the views from the porch justice.
My advice would be to buy all the food and wine you need for the length of your stay in ABQ or Santa Fe then never leave this property. Perhaps go to Ghost Ranch, tour the O'Keeffe home, or have a nice lunch at The Abiquiu Inn (Which seems to have found itself!) but drag everything you need in and you'll have no need or desire to venture far. This is a stunning place, beautifully equipped and nestled in perhaps one of the sweetest spots in Northern NM.
We appreciated the thoughtfulness of dry firewood, a great kitchen, and all the welcoming touches of owners who seemed to genuinely want us to enjoy ourselves..... and we did! We felt that generosity and truly felt at home..... which doesn't always happen.
I'd recommend this to even the pickiest of my travel friends if Northern New Mexico interests them even slightly.
We loved our stay here.

We came to Vista de Lago for an anniversary trip and the memories will stay with us forever. You can't even try to describe the beauty that surrounds you. The description of the place is spot on and we had no problem finding it from the directions we were given. I really appreciated the phone call from Larry to answer my questions before the trip. The house was clean and lovely but why anyone would spend their time indoors is beyond me. The sunrises were beautiful and I have never seen that many stars in my life. We took tons of pictures and they turned out fantastic (I am getting a few enlarged and framed) but the camera still can't quite capture the true beauty that your eyes see. I would recommend Vista de Lago to everyone and I hope to return in the near future. I have Celiac disease and I must add that it was such a nice surprise that Bode's General store carries some gluten free foods. Thanks again to Larry and Laurie for sharing their little piece of heaven with us.

If you are looking for a place away from the madding crowd, or looking for wildlife, taking long walks, reading, fishing, "thinking"...or simply want to rejuvenate ----EUREKA! There is a pleasure to satisfy anyone in the family. The Casita is everything, and more, that is described in the Homeaway description. All you have to take with you are your clothes and food items. The pantry is stocked with essential items...down to a pastry brush and garlic press. The views from the portal are breath-taking...as are the views looking out through the windows. We were soooo fortunate to be staying during the full moon (Blue Moon) cycle. Taking pictures is a "must" because you will want to relive this retreat/vacation. I cannot say enough about this "vacation spot"...If you are looking for something close to Santa Fe, but removed from all the usual tourist attractions and distractions; I recommend this beautiful locale in Abiquiu.
Larry and Laurie have thought of every detail, including the design of the house to enable views from every room, down to providing items that add to our creature comforts when away from home. Do yourself a favor and book a vacation at Vista de Lago in Abiquiu.

Nothing prepares you for your arrival at this destination. Well, that's not strictly true. Larry & Laurie do provide excellent photos showing what you are going to get upon your arrival. However, nothing 'truly' prepares you for your arrival at this destination. It is breathtaking. It is isolated. It is part of the scenery. It is unique. If heaven on Earth exists, then this must be just round the corner. I cannot give it any higher recommendation. What you do with it whilst you are there, is up to you. Invest your time well, this kind of opportunity is all too rare.
Owners response: You're right about the 'arrival' impact. Every time I get to the top of that Mesa, I am awestruck. Glad you enjoyed it as much as we do.

My husband and I absolutely loved the home at Abiquiu Lake. Larry was very helpful and gave us detailed instructions for everything. The kitchen and bathrooms were sparkling clean and we loved the fact that so many condiments, etc were left by previous renters. Our only recommendation would be to suggest that guests do their grocery shopping before arriving at the house. It's a very remote location and the closest substantial grocery store is about forty-five minutes away. Larry and Laurie supplied a list of restaurants with their reviews but quite honestly we loved the quiet and solitude so much we only went out one night to the Abiquiu Inn, which was delicious. We did drive to Albuquerque to visit relatives driving the back road through Cuba, and also visited Ghost Ranch, but those were our only ventures away from the house. We hiked, read, slept and watched movies and were thoroughly content. We recommend this spot to anyone craving peace and quiet.
Owners response: I know EXACTLY what you mean...It's really hard to leave Vista de Lago once you're there. It kind of transports you to another world. Glad you enjoyed it! Laurie and I would be happy to have you back any time.

We stayed in this lovely, newer home for 12 days. The home is a sanctuary and center point for our travels. Visit Bodes Country Store in Abiquiu. A meal at the Abiquiu Inn is a must, and you can also arrange to tour the O'Keefe home in Abiquiu where she stayed for some 30 years. The small town up off the highway is worth exploring and you must stop and see and talk with Napoleon Garcia who has lived there all his life, and knew Georgia. His home is well marked with a tourist information sign. Up above his home is a church with the three crosses and historic cemetery. I took my astronomy books and explored the stars as they are very clear without moonlight; although the homeowners supplied books, flashlights, and star charts. They have a large library of up to date DVD's for the occasional movie at night. Both bedrooms have full screen doors that keeps the rooms cool at night. Sitting outside, the Pedernal Butte is very prominent, and O'Keefe's ashes are spread on top. The view is stunning with the red cliffs and the reservoir of Abiquiu which was never real busy. There are two entrances to the reservoir, one for a swimming area and beach, and the other for launching boats. Also RV Hook-ups. People fish as well but we found our own private fishing just down the hill from the house right to the water, where my son and husband caught Walleye,Trout, and Catfish during the dusk hours with minnows. To reach this spectacular view area, you drive from Abiquiu SE another 30 minutes or so and do enter a large Spanish land grant area with sparsely laid homes along a 4 mile or so well graded road and gated to the house. The seclusion, quietness, and view is worth the little extra drive. We always stopped at Bode's, and picked up a popsicle for our drive back to the house. My list of destinations is long! We first explored the Ghost Ranch, which also has an archaeological museum, and very picturesque scenery that brought Georgia O'Keefe here in the summers to paint. Just past that road on the left is a beautiful well graded road to the Monastery of the Desert that goes along the Chama River. It is well worth the drive. We spent some time up at Heron Reservoir and the small towns around there with lovely country and large trees. A drive to Ojo Caliente is a must; also Dixon, Pilar (and the River Road along the Rio Grande and Rafting) and Taos, Santa Fe (Museums and the Square), Los Alamos drive from Jemez Springs, Indian Pueblos, Jemez Springs drive, Chaco Canyon, etc.
Owners response: Wow, I had no idea that Walleye, Trout, and Catfish were to be so easily caught down at the lake...will definitely give that a shot next time. You and your family are always welcome at Vista de Lago Sharon. All the best - Larry and Laurie

The home is all that it is represented to be -- beautiful, clean, elegant -- and sited atop a remote mesa where the views stretch for miles horizontally. Vertically, it's straight up to the heavens, for this location promotes a truly divine atmosphere for those seeking solitude and natural beauty. The next closest home is hundreds of yards away – the only human visible to us during our stay was the occasional ranch hand tending cattle a mile or so away. We drove our rented SUV from the Albuquerque airport, stopping briefly at Trader Joe's in Santa Fe to stock up on food and drink. That was the last time the vehicle was cranked up until it was time to go. In the interim, it was marathon reading, eating, drinking, hiking, sleeping and sitting around the fire with no cars, no cares, no extraneous sounds and no lack of comfort. The home is mercifully under-decorated and such art that hangs on the walls is worthy of the space. The bed was comfortable, the linens well chosen, the elegant furnishings appropriate to the home's size and location. During our stay there was plenty of firewood and other unexpected amenities. The kitchen was both highly functional and well stocked with dishes, glasses and utensils. Both architecturally and in its furnishings, this home is obviously the product of much thought and care. If we were to suggest one change -- and one thing is about all that caught our attention -- it would be to install dimmers on most or all of the lighting in order let each guest set the nighttime mood. Short of that one point, we have no trouble giving this lovely dwelling an enthusiastic five stars.

We have traveled almost all the states of the union and stayed in many nice places, but we enjoyed your home the most of all. We would come back to this home as a very first choice when traveling to New Mexico.
It was just right for my husband, myself and our grandson. We travel on a special trip with each one of our grandchildren (now numbering 13) when they turn 16. I fully believe our grandson who accompanied us enjoyed it so much that he could possibly return to this location again when he has a family of his own to travel with. We saw beautiful sites from the home with the lake view and many, many area attractions as far away as Mesa Verde in Colorado, which is an easy day trip. We hiked to the waterfalls in Brazos and even had an interesting adventure when we got lost in the mountains trying to take a back road to Jemez Springs. That day we got to meet some wonderful local people, whom we now consider friends, who helped us get our vehicle unstuck and return to our casita safely. These will be moments we will never forget or be able to recreate again. They are now 'Lifetime Memories'. Thanks for making your home a beautiful and comfortable place for us to stay.
Owners response: Thanks for the kind words Harry. We're excited to bring our 2 granddaughters there as soon as they are old enough. Of course we'd be thrilled to have you and your family back anytime. All the best...Larry and Laurie

We are so pleased to have made the choice to stay in this lovely casita. We wanted to spend some time at Ghost ranch so it was a perfect location. In addition we went to Chaco Cultural park which is over an hour from Cuba. We also went to several of the northern pueblos. Next time I must bring the kayak because the Abiquiu lake is serenely perfect for paddlers. We ate at all the recommended restaurants except one in Coyote. They were all terrific. Our only regret is that we did not have a few more days. We drove home to Colorado through Chama, Simply a spectacular drive.

Owners response: Very nice, Carol, to know that our place met with your high standards. I know how beautiful Colorado is, so your impression of our little slice of No. NM means a lot. Hope you come back soon ;-)

My wife and I just wanted to "get away from it all" for a few days. This property sure did the trick. There are many sights in the surrounding area, but the views all around might make you just want to stay in. The home is just as you see in the pictures, with the portales facing into the morning sun to catch the often spectacular sunrise. Because the home is in such close proximity to Abiquiu Lake, the wildlife viewing opportunities were exceptional. Hopefully we can get back to this area soon, as we did not spend nearly enough time.

Owners response: You hit the nail on the head Tom...nothing clears the chaos from my head like a few days at Vista de Lago. Hope you come back soon.

The house was perfect; the location was perfect; and the view was perfect. We know that the property owner has no control over this, but the weather was perfect too. Nothing negative has been cropped out of the pictures (because there is nothing negative). The pictures accurately depict the property; but in truth, they understate it because pictures cannot capture the openess, the quiet, and the fresh air. If you are serious about your peace and quiet - this place is for you. At this house, we had an entire highpoint mesa to ourselves. The view allows a few other homes to be seen off in the distance, but not heard. Privacy and quiet are teamed up with a all the conveniences of a modern home. The distinctive rounded design always draws one's eye to the views, and that's the way it should be. Pull up a chair anywhere along the semi-circular portal, and enjoy the views of the desert landscape, the lake, and the colored rock formations. We cannot comment on local sights and attractions because we were too comfortable, and relaxed, to venture away from the house during our three night stay - that too is a glowing compliment to the property.
Recommended for: adventure seekers, age 55+, sight seeing, romantic getaway
Owners response: The quiet here just always catches me off guard a bit...it continues to amaze me. Glad you enjoyed it as much as we do Mark...hope to see you here again in the future...Larry

This was our first experience with renting through VRBO, and are now sold on the option. This home really is, as some reviewers have said, even better than the pictures. Inside, it's clean and new but also feels warm and inviting, an extension of the landscape. I think the best part is that even when you're inside you can experience the amazing views from nearly every room--though we were all glad to walk around a bit and sit on the porch to really take more in. The road to the casita was a little slushy, as the area had just had a big snow--we were glad we were in an SUV, though it probably wouldn't matter during the summer. The owners were helpful, both on the phone and with plenty of info in the casita itself. We tried to squeeze in a lot of activity, since we had first-time-NM visitors along, but on a second winter trip would probably schedule lots of a downtime to enjoy the casita and surroundings. (Wouldn't have missed the O'Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe and House/Studio in Abiquiu, though.) Let me put it this way: We were with a 20 year old and an 18 year old, and other than checking email a few times, no one had any interest in their laptops or cellphones.

Owners response: Thanks, Liz. We feel the same way. There are so many wonderful things to do and see in the area, but it’s absolute HEAVEN just to stay at the Casita and watch the amazing colors and vistas unfold hour by hour. Laurie and I hope to see you back soon.

The property and home are lovely and most restful. The home is well equipped and beautifully furnished. Isolated overlooking O'keefe views it offers a calm and meditative experience. The property manager was very helpful and went above and beyond to assist us. I would give the home 5 stars if there were, in fact, two bedrooms. It is a one bedroom with a second room equipped with a sofa bed. The sofa bed is small for two adults, especially when we are not a "couple."
Owners response: We're so glad you enjoyed the peace and quiet Deborah. BTW: The 2nd bedroom mattress is actually queen size and one of the sofas in the living room is also a pull-out bed. With an armoire in that bedroom - and a bathroom dedicated to that room - we strive to make it a comfortable experience for our guests. We look forward to seeing you again soon.

We rented over the Christmas holidays. The photos looked wonderful, but wait till you see. It was more than I expected. The casita was clean, new, beautiful, private, cozy, warm and functional. But most important, the view is truly spectacular. We got there late at night, and couldn't see the view. But, the next morning the sun painted a jaw dropping landscape on the mountains. Steam was coming from the lake. Wow. Outside, the silence was deafening. The stars can almost be touched. Very peaceful. The owners were very helpful. We did go skiing, but I liked enjoying the beauty back at the house. Larry is truly blessed to have this Casita. You will be too. I highly recommend.

Hi everyone! For my birthday my husband sometimes takes me to Santa Fe, New Mexico. This time we decided we hadn't seen the Abiquiu area so we found Vista del Lago. Did we luck out?! What a jewel we found! We LOVE quiet and seclusion and we certainly had that here! Every part of the day the colors change with the sun on the mountains all around us. No wonder the artist Georgia O'Keeffe fell in love with this area! You could see "her" blue mountain Pedernal from most every window and as you walked out the door every time! The house was built with this in mind, of course, VIEWS! ~And~ The beautiful views of the Abiquiu Lake were all around us which at any time we could look up and see! It was lovely to see the sunrise and sunset every day. We have been to the Caribbean and have been amazed at the many stars at night but being here was even better! It was awesome! Do not miss looking at the stars here! The house was equipped with everything anyone would ever need, even a washer and dryer! It was spotless and comfortable. We enjoyed going to the Ghost Ranch and just driving around in the area is quite amazing! Someone told us about the Monastery of Christ in the Desert 13 miles out. What a magical place this is! I love taking photos so I was in Heaven this whole trip and got some great shots! We drove over to Ojo Caliente for Thanksgiving lunch (which was wonderful!) and to soak in the hot mineral pools, such a great day! We ate at the Abiquiu Inn several times and it was yummy especially for breakfast. The pinon pancakes with the rosemary infused syrup is to die for! Bodes' store was a great spot to get supplies of any kind! Our last day we drove into Santa Fe and went to the Georgia O'Keeffe museum (we tried to see her house in Abiquiu, but it was closed for the season...next time?), which was wonderful and shopped for my birthday and Christmas! We then went to Gabriel's for my birthday dinner. It was fabulous! Try the Chicken Mole and the Tres Leches Cake! ~But~ we couldn't wait to get back from all the busyness of our day to Vista Del Lago to relax by the fire! Many THANKS to the owners, Laurie and Larry and to Scott for making this a trip to remember forever! Memories were made here!

No question. This was for us, a perfect vacation destination. We felt pampered and soaked in luxury in this fabulous, pristine, home. The surrounding magical views, and clean fresh air quickly eased our big city woes.
As an artist and photographer, I spent days painting from the portal and shooting photos. Hubby enjoyed reading and napping. Hiking the area, or driving into Taos or Santa Fe for a day trip, offers any level of excitement with fine dining, shopping or museum and gallery visits. Oh, the book shelf had a wonderful array of good reads as well.
The managers and owners were attentive and welcoming. Many thanks for providing such a great vacation home. You really thought of everything.
We are planning two weeks in 2012. Can't wait!

We spent a week at the casita and it was fabulous. It truly is so secluded and private. We spent our days doing nearby hikes (recommend Chimney Rock at Ghost Ranch, Echo Ampitheater, and Plaza Blanca) and then went "home" to our casita. Spent the evening cooking great food and drinking wine. Never got tired of the fabulous views and the constantly changing light and colors. We stocked up at Trader Joe's in Santa Fe and had everything we needed for the week. Keep in mind that the casita is 30 minutes from the nearest store (Bode's in Abiquiu). The drive up to the casita is a four mile long rocky dirt road and the area is gated. This makes it totally private and quiet. And you should see the colors at sunset and the stars at night. Amazing! Both owners and property managers were very helpful with any questions and concerns we had. We definitely hope to go back, maybe in the winter this time. The casita has a great fireplace and plenty of wood!

The house was everything as described! The views were outstanding and the storms that popped up quickly provide for some great picture opportunities with the different colors in the sky and the lightning. We chose to have a day of relaxing on the porch and enjoyed the views which included the lake changing colors (and the quiet), another day we drove to Chama for the train ride into Colorado for more beautiful views.
Anyone choosing this house will completely enjoy themselves. The owners have done a wonderful job of making you feel welcome and to enjoy the many comforts they have included in their home.

Our two weeks at Vista de Lago were nothing short of spectacular! The house, the views, the weather, everything was fabulous. Larry and Laurie have equipped and decorated their home perfectly. Although there are several great places close by to eat, we had most of our meals in, and the kitchen was a joy to work in. I loved starting the day with a cup of coffee on the portal watching the sun come up over Ghost Ranch and Abiquiu lake, then a morning hike around the neighboring hills or down to the lake. If you don't want to spend the rest of the day peacefully reading or soaking up the surrounding vistas, there are many area attractions and outings to be had. They have all this information including maps in the house. The caretakers, Scott and Glynn, were great and always available anytime there was question. I highly recommend staying at Vista de Lago. You won't be disappointed.

Super place, very well maintained, beautiful inside and outside. No noise, I mean no neighbors, no traffic, just peace and quiet and the night sky. Views of the red skirted clifts of Ghost Ranch in the distance one way and the other views of Pedernal national forest...dry climate which cools off at night. The house itself is immaculate, modern appliances. We stayed two wonderful weeks. Local contact was always available and answered his phone. This is a great get away, good resturant 30 minutes away, so I recomend cooking your own meals.

My stay at Vista del Lago was amazing -- it was a personal retreat with a little work weaved in. The views are (as advertised) beyond spectacular and the casita itself is brand new with all the amenities one could desire. The location is so peaceful -- all I could hear was the wind and the birds. I never grew tired of walking out the door to gaze at the lake, the mountains, the desert landscape....and at night, you can see a million stars. All it took was a short drive to arrive at some of the most beautiful hikes I have experienced. The property managers were beyond helpful and went out of their way to make my stay memorable. I plan on returning and would recommend this beautiful casita and location to everyone!!

Driving up to the Casita, we were surprised at being able to just walk in and make ourselves at home at such a luxurious spot. We felt like Goldilocks. It is like an oasis in the midst of the great mesas of Abiquiu. I've been coming to New Mexico for forty years and am never disappointed at its magic, and this particular place has a magic of its own. Being so far away from civilization allows one to feel connected to the sky and understand some of what the ancient peoples saw when they looked up at night. The reds and rusts of the Abiquiu cliffs remind me of how timeless these rocks are. One goes away feeling peaceful and grounded.

My husband and 14 yr old son stayed at this casita in the summer of 2009. When we booked it on line we were guided by the surrounding beauty and the remoteness of the place, which we have been craving. When we finally arrived we were amazed at the overwhelming calmness of the place, it was a beautiful evening and the vistas were breathtaking. We felt immediately at piece with the place and the house. The house comes with all luxury amenities, top of the line appliances (which I only hoped to use more since we only stayed 2 nights), two bathrooms (with washer/dryer) and it is beautifully decorated. Being from Canada the New Mexico style is very appealing to us and we fell in love with the house. Upon returning home we checked it on line once more to see that it was for sale - too bad for us that we live 4000 km away - we surely would have considered buying it! And to think how close we were to the Gloria O'Keeffe's ranch and never had a chance to visit makes us think that we need to go back soon!

A gorgeous home in a stunning location. The living room is nothing less than spectacular in it's views. Hiking immediately outside the casita was a plus. After driving the several hours from Albuquerque (stopping in Cuba for some great local fare), I opened my car door as was welcomed with a serenity I had not experienced in years. Quiet, just the light wind buffeting my face. Perched above the surrounding landscape the vistas surrounding me were spectacular, from the red rocks of Ghost Ranch to the high sacred mountain to the East. Lake Abiquiu was stretched out below and I could feel this place was special. I pulled my bags from the car and entered into the delicious warmth of the house, felt the radiant heat floors and the surrounding comfort envelope me and immediately felt at home. The house is comfortable and nicely appointed. The many large windows curve along the North facing contours of the house overlooking Ghost Ranch, Lake Abiquiu and beyond. The house appears new, nicely appointed and in excellent condition. The next day I did some hiking and also drove into Abiquiu and did some site seeing. I only wish I had more time. I'll definitely be back.
