Bergstrasse Ski Cabin in Government Camp

Bergstrasse: or, in English, a "mountain avenue." Just footsteps from Skibowl resort, this '50s style chalet in Government Camp is aptly named. Despite its modern, A-frame structure and angular walls that reach out like arms to the sides, this beautifully designed chalet seems to grow naturally out of the pine-studded hillside. Frank Loyd Wright might have felt at home here. You will too. Though, deceptively small from the outside, Bergstrasse has three levels and will accommodate up to 10 vacationers eager to tackle the slopes in the winter, or the wealth of summer activities in and around the Government Camp area.

Much like Noah's Ark, Bergstrasse has two of everything. With two separate living areas - each with its own stove, sink and microwave - it's the perfect getaway spot for family reunions or other large gatherings. A reminder of the days before Rossignol and Atomic were household words, the wooden skis, leather boots, and bamboo poles hanging from the walls are a charming reminder of how skiing used to be. Step from the big deck into the main living area and experience the ample space afforded by the A-frame design. Plenty of comfortable seating on multiple couches. Bring along the laptop. There's internet throughout. Downstairs, you'll also be able to enjoy a DVD or watch your favorite TV shows on the free cable. And that's not all! Make sure you load up the iPod before you go. There's a dock for that too.

Bergstrasse has two kitchens, one on the main level with a huge double refrigerator, double sink, and microwave, the other (lower level)is a smaller kitchen with a stove, a smaller frig, and another microwave. This allows visiting groups a little privacy and time apart. The washer and dryer are down here as well. In summer, fire up the gas grill and enjoy a barbeque.

This chalet has three bedrooms. Of the three bedrooms, two offer their own unique view of the surrounding forest. Downstairs is another living area with its own full bathroom. There's another full bathroom on the main floor as well. There is plenty of room for everyone! In all, there is one double bed, four twins, and two bunk beds.

Lots of things to do in Government Camp no matter what season. For skiers, Skibowl and Summit Meadows are right in town. Head southeast around the other side of Mount Hood (about a half-hour's drive) to Mount Hood Meadows for more great winter fun. For hikers, 25 hiking trails nearby with varying difficulties. Golfers are just 15 minutes from Welches where they can try their luck on the Foxglove course. The Sandy and Salmon rivers are not far, so grab your rod and tackle box, your kayaks, and your canoes. Or, visit historic Timberline Lodge or the Mount Hood Cultural Center. Summer or winter, make Bergstrasse your vacation basecamp.
