Weekend concert stay

Review submitted: July 17, 2013   Date of arrival: June 28, 2013

My wife and I recently stayed aboard the Pier Gold while visiting Chicago for a concert at Northerly Island--what a great time. The boat was very well appointed (Mary has thought of everything) and extremely well situated. Easy walk to the beach/shore and a quick cab ride to anywhere downtown. Mary went out of her way as a host to make our weekend memorable. Thoroughly enjoyable and highly recommended.

Everything it says and much more -- delightful!

Review submitted: June 4, 2013   Date of arrival: May 15, 2013

We found this to be a unique experience in the heart of Chicago, although we preferred to spend most of our time on the boat. Our visit was the end of May, and Springtime along the marina is fantastic.

The boat is built for creature comforts, so lighting, carpet, kitchen, and bathrooms are well equipped. Decorations and provisioning are top notch, with fluffy towels, a fine assortment of hygiene products, and superb ventilation. Water is very hot for a soothing wash. All environmental systems work flawlessly, and the usual ship sounds are muted. The kitchen has everything you need – nice place settings, sharp knives, cups and glasses galore, and skillet and pot for medium-size cooking. Description of breakfast items is not understated – there is real butter and cream cheese, fresh bagels, half and half, and truly superb gourmet coffee (ground the day you arrive). We were on the boat for 3 days and nights, with guests, and found the dining area and sofa quite comfortable and spacious.

The marina security is active 24 hours a day and the area is quiet at night. Dining In Service offered by the B & B Boatel delivered food within 1 minute of their estimated time. Beds on Pier Gold were comfortable and supportive, including the twin beds aft. We enjoyed meeting Mary, owner and host, who is genuinely concerned for your safety, eager for your stay to be comfortable and complete, and has many years of live-aboard experience to know what makes a boat like home. Mary is attentive to all the details, and keeps a close watch to assure you have everything needed for a memorable stay. We have the dates set for our next visit.

When you see pictures of the Chicago skyline, they hardly do justice to the actual view from the boat – it is spectacular. At night, columns of Soldier Field nearby are illuminated, along with a view of the skyline you cannot get anywhere else but from this marina. Sitting either on the flying deck cockpit or on the back outside deck is a real treat, and we found ourselves there often, watching the marina activity, trees along the park, and the runners and bikers along the trail. Sunset over the skyline is unreal. It is a 5-minute walk to Solidarity Drive where the Field Museum is an absolute must (they have a terrific Museum cafe with panini sandwiches and fabulous mac’n cheese). Along the mall at one end is the Adler Planetarium, particularly well suited for children (hands-on activities) and awesome theater shows.

Recommended for: adventure seekers, age 55+, families with young children, families with teenagers, sight seeing, tourists without a car, romantic getaway
