activities and attractions in Cartagena Colombia
See & Do
There are endless things to see and do during your visit to Cartagena... all within a short walking distance, taxi ride, or boat excursion away. Some of the top highlights include:
Sites
- Stroll through the Colonial district with its old buildings, shops, incredible restaurants and cafés.
- Walk west along the wide plaza on top of the 400 year-old stone wall that encircles the city. The wall stretches for more than 6 miles and you can view the Caribbean to your right and the restored colonial streets to your left.
- The Seaport, Colombia's largest, receiving ships from all over the world.
- The many beautiful Cathedrals throughout the city – particularly at sunset, or 'wedding hour'.
- Rosario Islands – archipelago of beautiful white sand islands off the coast of Colombia, a national park with oceanarium, etc.
Shopping
- Many top fashion designer's boutiques – just a few minute's walk from the Palmetto.
- Caribe Plaza Commercial Center - a world class Shopping Centre that includes many of the most popular US and European stores – 10 minute drive from the Palmetto.
- Colombian Handicrafts - amazing Colombian Artisans crafting hand made gold & silver jewelery, wooden bowls & trays, embroidered purses, hammocks, masks, clay figurines, etc. These can be found in different stores and areas throughout Cartegena.
Museums & Art Galleries
- The Museo de Arte Moderno – showcasing amazing works by Colombian Artists
- The Gold Museum – housed in a Baroque mansion displaying incredible jewellery
- The Palacio de la Inquisicion
Activities - Kiteboarding & Windsurfing
Cartagena generally experiences some wind all year round, but the windy season runs from December to April, with February traditionally being the windiest month, averaging 20 – 25 knots. This makes Cartagena an excellent spot for both kiteboarding & windsurfing.
If you bring your own equipment you can kitesurf right from the beach in front of thePalmetto. If you are willing to hire a boat, you could also do a 'downwinder' and have the driver pick you up at the desired spot. A windsurfing school is located on the beach, about a 7 minute walk down the beach from the Palmetto.
Swimming, Snorkeling & Scuba Diving
One of the most recommended things to experience is a visit to the Rosario Islands, a national park. This archipelago also hosts an incredible marine park. There are charter boats to this destination but if you hire a boat for a day or two, you can snorkel, scuba dive, and enjoy fresh seafood for lunch wherever you like. A boat trip takes about 40 minutes from Cartagena.
Sailing
If you are thinking of visiting by private yacht, the place to berth is Club Nautico Cartegena.
Wine & Dine Restaurants
Cartagena's talented internationally-trained chefs create a rich culinary palate. Dishes can be traditional, or fused creations blending flavors and ingredients from the Caribbean, Europe, Africa & Asia. A few restaurants reside in mansions dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries, and some restaurants offer alfresco dining on beautiful brick courtyards. The following is a list of some choice spots.
Club de Pesca
Located on the waterfront beside the Club Nautico Cartagena marina, this restaurant has a beautiful & historical setting and offers elegantly prepared traditional Colombian seafood dishes.
El Santísimo
Enjoy classic Colombian dishes with unique sauces prepared by French-trained chefs.
Guantanamera
Opened in January 2009, this new hot spot features contemporary Caribbean & Cuban cuisine.
La Perla
A chic little Peruvian & Mediterranean seafood restaurant specializing in expert-mixed cocktails.
La Vitrola
One of the 'hottest' restaurants in town (definitely make reservations in advance), this stylish spot serves Cuban and Caribbean seafood & salad plates while talented musicians have people dancing between tables.
Mila Café & Patisserie
Enjoy breakfast, lunch, coffee, or a snack at this delectable little café .
Palma
This chic and contemporary restaurant serves Caribbean-Italian fusion cuisine. If making reservations yourself, ask to dine on their small roof-top terrace to enjoy views of the city and the Santa Clara.
Restaurant 8-18
This relatively new restaurant offers a bit of 'South Beach' in the Colonial district and features a nice pasta and seafood menu.
Nightlife
Cartagena is a very musically vibrant city. People gather in bars, clubs and public squares to enjoy cocktails, share laughs, and dance into the wee hours of the morning. You can relax with a Colombian beer on Plaza patios; take it all in while sipping aguardiente, the anise-flavored drink that's a national favorite; or mojito in hand, groove to the music of talented musicians and club dj's. The following are some spots to enjoy...
Café del Mar
Its name is world famous and with just one visit you'll see why. It sits on the historic city wall, where you can see the Caribbean Sea on one side and the Colonial district on the other. Enjoy sunset cocktails/pre-dinner drinks, or the late night scene, where trendy local and international clientele converge to listen to DJ-spun beats.
Café Havana
This bar takes you back to it's namesake, old Havana, with both it's decor and music. Live bands perform on a small stage and weekends are jam packed with swaying hips.
La Vitrola
One of the most popular places to hear live music, this 1940's Cuban atmosphere hosts talented musicians playing merengue, salsa and Cuban music, keeping the mojitos flowing and the people on their feet.
Hope you enjoy your stay in this magical place !!!!
