activities and attractions in Saugatuck Michigan

A number of scenic city parks - two of them adorned by Victorian style gazebos - dot the riverside. They are unhurried spots where you can spend the day picnicking, reading or watching the sailboats slip by.
An old-fashioned sternwheeler shuttles passengers on tours of the river and along the Lake Michigan shoreline. These water-bound excursions are punctuated by cottages, extravagant homes, forests, wetlands, a panorama of dunes and the Ghost Town of Singapore.

Visitors can enjoy an even more leisurely boat ride by hopping aboard North America's only hand-cranked chain ferry for a trip across the river or board a WWII "Duck" that provides ferry service between Saugatuck and Douglas. Strolling along a winding boardwalk offers another impression of the river - homeport to some 900 yachts and sailboats. Anglers can charter boats to go after salmon, trout, pike and perch. Those who want to make their own waves can rent boats, kayaks, jetskis, pontoons or charter sailboats or yachts.

Back on dry land, the adventuresome can climb 282 steps to the top of the Mt. Baldhead sand dune. For their heart-pounding effort climbers are rewarded with a stunning bird's-eye view of the harbor and lake below. Another aerial view is in store for visitors who take a freewheeling ride on a converted pick-up truck, known as a "dune schooner", across some of the towering sand hills. Back on level ground, the area has one private taxi service plus the Interurban bus. Both offer visitors hassle-free, door-to-door transportation. Golfers can hit the links at three 18-hole championship golf courses, one designed by golfing legend Arnold Palmer.

For arts enthusiasts the area boasts more than 35 art galleries, a chamber music festival and is host to the Waterfront Film Festival each June - ranked 3rd after Sundance and Cannes by Screen Actors Guild Magazine. Mason Street Warehouse professional theatre company presents Broadway-quality "uptown theatre in downtown Saugatuck" at the Saugatuck Center for the Arts throughout the season. The SCA, itself, also sponsors year 'round professional productions, as well as The Children's Film Festival in November and a Farmers Market on Fridays. The Red Barn Playhouse highlights local talent, community theatre and a film study series. Both arts venues provide numerous opportunities for hands-on creativity, lectures, concerts and other artistic programs.

Great House!!

Lcreags (Holland Mi.)
Review submitted: May 16, 2013   Date of arrival: April 26, 2013

We rented this property for a girls weekend and it was perfect. Very clean and lots of room to spread out. 3 bathrooms was a huge plus! Very nicely decorated with all the comforts of home!! We walked to town to shop and go out to eat. We also took a short ride to Mt. Baldy and hiked to the beach. We enjoyed morning coffee on the great sun porch with views of the river! Thanks Amanda! We hope to be back next year!

Loved it!!!

We had a group of 10 girls that wanted a place to go to relax and drink wine and this house was perfect!!! We loved that we didn't have to get separate hotel rooms and could all stay in one house together. It was very nicely remodeled, clean and accommodating for our group.

We visited Fenn Valley winery, which was only like 10 minutes away, and got to taste some great wines. Downtown was a short walk to do some shopping and there are some very cute little shops to visit. We had dinner at the Brewery on Saturday and everyone loved their meals.

No complaints at all and we’re hoping that this is going to be an annual trip for our group!

Needs a little work!

Review submitted: September 6, 2012   Date of arrival: August 31, 2012

The house was newly remodeled and very comfortable. I'm not sure they were finished with everything. We had 5 couples, all over 60 and we were pleased with the accomodations! Could use more hooks in the bathrooms/bedrooms for towels since we were sharing the bathrooms. Need more coffee cups! 10 coffee drinkers and 3 cups! Also, made spaghetti the 1st nite, didn't have a colander. Other than that the kitchen was well stocked and appliances were all new! Walk to town was a bit far, but we all made it! Parking for house was a bit crowded and if someone parked behind the second car you couldn't get out if people were parked next to you! The only TV, which was in one of the guest bedrooms(?), a 19", was not operational. It was the 1st week of college football and the men were NOT happy! Could use some table lamps on side tables in bedrooms for reading. Bring your head-lamps! All in all it was a lot of fun and we enjoyed our stay! Sitting on the porch was the best...greeting all the people walking by!
