"Heavenly Days" Cottage, overlooking Somes Sound, was featured
on "Around the World in 80 Homes" on The Fine Living Channel in
October, 2004. It was built in 1895 and completely renovated in 1995
with special attention to restoring all its original details,
including woodwork, hardwood floors, turn of the century slate sink,
clapboard and shingled siding, etc. The cottage is located on Mount
Desert Island, in the town of Mount Desert and the village of Hall
Quarry. The cottage was the guest cottage to the home of Cyrus Hall
of Hall Quarry, who owned most of the quarries in the area and is
who the village is named for. Beautiful granite was mined in the
quarries of Hall Quarry and shipped from Somes Sound to destinations
all over the world.
The cottage is decorated with beautiful yet durable antiques from
approximately the 1870's to 1950's. Comfortable and casual, it's
like taking a step back in time to yesteryear in coastal Downeast
Maine! On the first floor, you'll find the kitchen with various
collections of antique kitchenware, an antique hoosier, butcher-
block countertop as well as all the modern comforts of home
(dishwasher, electric stove and refrigerator, coffee maker and
microwave). The dining room provides seating for 6-8 and the living
room offers great views of the Sound. The second floor offers 3
bedrooms with 1 queen and 2 double beds. The private deck off the
master bedroom boast panoramic views of Somes Sound and the
surrounding mountains. Or, sit in the hot tub on the covered porch
(off the living room) and watch the sailboats and lobster boats
float by. You may even see a lobsterman hauling his traps right in
front of the cottage while you drink your morning coffee.
With sloping lawn to the water's edge, the cottage is situated
approximately 250ft from the shore of beautiful Somes Sound, the
only natural fjord on the east coast. Extensive granite stonework,
including a patio, rock walls, granite steps and pathways,
complement the dramatic changes in landscape from mountain to ocean.
Located on the "quiet side" of Mount Desert Island, the cottage is
still within minutes of all that the island has to offer.
Spend your days exploring Mount Desert Island's many villages
including Bar Harbor and world-famous Acadia National Park.
Opportunities for whale watching, boat rentals and charters,
fishing, swimming, tennis, shopping, kayaking, hiking and many more
are within minutes. Walk, drive or take Mt. Desert Island's new bus,
the "Island Explorer", available to the public free of charge!
Destinations include just about anywhere you want to go on the
In the fall, enjoy Maine's spectacular foliage. From the porch, look
across Somes Sound for breathtaking views of the mountains of Acadia
National Park. Or, hop in the car for a quick drive to the top of
Cadillac Mountain for a bird's eye view of Bar Harbor and
surrounding villages. Come and enjoy!!

Loads of character, a view, and a great location.

Review submitted: March 1, 2014   Date of arrival: May 19, 2012

We found this on VRBO and are concluding our weeklong stay tomorrow. We really loved this home. It is not the sleek, brand new vacation home that spring up in vacation destinations (we've stayed in those, too, and they can be fun) - but this home gives you the feel of the history of the place. Built over 100 years ago and furnished in antiques of varying age, this home has a story to tell. The area of Mount Desert where it is located used to be the home of a granite quarry, and remnants of that age can be seen all over the area with chunks and boulders of granite lining drives. There are two houses below and to the sides but this house has an unobstructed view of the sound and access to the water front. It is so close to Acadia National Park that you have choices galore for waterfront hikes, lighthouses to photograph, and scenery to soak in. This house has one bathroom which is downstairs and all three bedrooms are on the second floor - BUT we had three people in the house and it was not a problem. The decor and the little touches the owners have given this home are what make it special. Highly recommended.

Peaceful and Quiet

Review submitted: October 7, 2013   Date of arrival: September 21, 2013

The location is out in the middle of nowhere with a store 2 miles away. Even with houses close by, you still feel like you are the only one on the planet. How perfect can that be? It was a perfect vacation. It was so peaceful and quiet. The deer came by every morning to see us. Looking out on the Sound from the hot tub will forever be in my mind as one of my most enjoyable views of the world. Did I mention how peaceful and quiet it was? We were 2 couples and I thought that juggling the one bathroom would be a problem but it wasn't. We cooked a couple of meals and the kitchen was well stocked with the pots, pans and dishes we needed. The cottage is nicely decorated with a vintage theme. If ever I make it back to Maine, I want to stay here again!

Heavenly Days Cottage

Review submitted: September 12, 2013   Date of arrival: August 31, 2013

Very nice vintage cottage surrounded by trees. 40's style interior. Single bath on first floor. Large porch with great views of Somes Sound. A few houses nearby, but very quiet and peaceful. Deer passed behind house during the day. Owners were very helpful. A short drive to Echo Lake, Somesville and South West Harbor. A little longer to Bar Harbor, Acadia and Mt. Cadillac. A great vacation area for all ages!
