activities and attractions in Albuquerque New Mexico
The Village of Corrales is bordered on the east by the Rio Grande and, across the river, by the Sandia Indian Reservation. To the south is the City of Albuquerque while to the west and north is the City of Rio Rancho. To cross the borders into Corrales is to step into another time and place where the stresses of twenty-first century life give way to the grace and pace of another era.
Corrales aggressively strives to retain a rural lifestyle. Prehistoric sites indicate the Corrales Valley has been occupied as early as 500 A.D. when the ancestors of the present-day Indian Pueblos derived sustenance from the fertile valley. Subsequent populations, including Hispanic, European and American families, settled here to raise grapes, apples, and livestock. Today, Corrales is distinguished by its broad green pastures and orchards, its rich historic and artistic character, and of course the sounds and scents of roosters, cows, horses and sheep.
There are fiestas and harvest celebrations, wine tasting events, and traditional Hispanic and Native American dances and religious observances throughout the year. Two of Corrales' most historic buildings are available for viewing. Casa San Ysidro Museum s a 1650's estate that is now operated by the City of Albuquerque Museum. The Old San Ysidro Church (1850’s) is also a Southwest treasure not to be missed.
For outdoor activities Corrales Bosque Nature Preserve offers spectacular views over Rio Grande, Bosque and The Sandia Mountains in the background. There are multiple trails ideal for hiking, mountain biking, horse back riding, birds and wildlife viewing.
Close proximity to Albuquerque offers many attractions like: Old Town, Rio Grande ZOO, Rio Grande Botanical Gardens, Aquarium – ABQ Bio Park, Museums, Golf courses, Sandia Peak Tramway, numerous cultural events, restaurants with famous New Mexico cousin, live music and micro breweries.
Day trips to surrounding area include world wide renown locations like: Santa Fe, Chaco Canyon and Bandelier National Monuments, Ojo Caliente Hot Springs, Bosque Del Apache Refuge just to mention few.
