house rental amenities

Our house is close to Santiago Park and the English Library with thousands of great books and DVDs (you have free membership of the library for your stay); beautifully refurbished for 2013, Maya house sleeps four (utilising the sofa bed in the second bedroom), and has sun patio with dipping pool, two large upstairs terraces off bedrooms. Nice kitchen and dining room.

Maya house is close to bus stops and there are taxi ranks close by. Taxis a very cheap here - we usually find a taxi ride in Merida costs around 40 pesos, which is USD $3.00.

It is just 40 minutes bus ride to the great beaches at Progreso - cost 16 pesos (just over a dollar) and the coast with their famous low-cost fish restaurants. Fresh caught Grouper is a pretty standard meal in most restaurants, but is cheapest in the thriving and huge market just two blocks from the beach: around 120 pesos for two people with drinks - which is USD $9.00.

Surrounding the park you’ll find a coffee house, supermarket (Aki), drugstore and a movie theatre. The Santiago district is to the west and north of Plaza Grande, a five minute walk from Maya House.

Merida is the ‘City of Peace’ the capital of the state of Yucatan. It is located in the northwest part of the state on the Gulf of Mexico.

Why is Merida so popular?
It is true that you will almost never hear any local or international visitor complain or have any bad thing to say about Merida. The place appears to be one of the most constantly popular and engaging destinations in the world. Even Tripadvisor has nothing negative posted!

Merida is popular among experienced world travellers because it is safe, beautiful, has tons of culture and is very inexpensive.

Oh - and the people in Merida are very, very nice!

Merida's low rental costs

A month's rental in Merida costs around three times less than elsewhere in the world.

Renting the equivalent two bed house in Spain or Florida, for example, would cost you around USD $2,630.00.

Merida is a colonial city with a very different culture from the rest of Mexico due to its geographical isolation, its traditional connection with Europe and Cuba and the strong Mayan presence. Though many thousands of people have settled in the Yucatan since new roads opened the area to the rest of Mexico in the 1970’s, estimates calculate that true Mayan’s account for above 70 percent of the population.

Although part of Mexico, Merida and the Yucatan has its own, very individual identity and culture. It is this separate identity that attracts so many international travelers to visit, to explore and to often make the Yucatan their home. Many expatriates have homes in Merida and stay here during the winter months - November through to April - to escape the colder climates in their own countries.

What to do in Merida?

Today Merida is a cosmopolitan city with colonial-era architecture and a rich cultural heritage. The overriding impression of visitors is that Merida is great value! In fact, every day of the week you will find free entertainment. Depending on the day, you can enjoy a selection of free dances, classical music concerts, visits to the zoo, guided tours around Merida and big band concerts.

Most nights you can enjoy regular free outdoor concerts, dancing and classical music entertainment.

Music forms an important part of Mexican culture and you will find plenty to enjoy around the neighbourhood.

Here are a few ideas that we found really worth while:

  • Free open-air concerts in plazas and parks around Centro most evenings
  • 10 peso family bike rides every Sunday along Paseo Montejo and through the city
  • City tour of Merida on the tourist bus for an overview of the city
  • Museum of Anthropology on Paseo Montejo
  • Free guided tour around the buildings of Plaza Grande, Merida
  • Take a cooking class and learn about Yucatecan cuisine
  • Ruta Puc, a Friday, Saturday or Sunday bus tour around five Mayan sites, from the centro Ado bus station
  • Great visit to cenote - underground spring and lake - just a bus ride away
  • Stroll along tree-lined Paseo de Montejo on Sunday, have an ice cream and admire the art display along the boulevard
  • Explore the main market four blocks to the south east of the main Plaza

The Yucatan - and Merida in particular - stimulate affection and loyalty inthose who live here in a similar way to regions such as Cornwall in England, Andalucia in Spain and Brittany in France. These places all possess a separate culture and identity from the rest of the country - with an indigenous, independent, welcoming population who engender great affection among visitors.

Of course, wherever we travel, it is always the people who make a visit to a place worthwhile. But Merida also has colonial architecture, a Caribbean atmosphere and Mayan cuisine to help make the city a successful and memorable destination.

Merida is sometimes called the "White City," because of its buildings made of white stone and the city's cleanliness.

Restaurant Economica: scattered throughout Merida are wonderful, tiny 'restaurant economicas' where you will find local dishes such as chicken and beef at low prices - we rarely pay above USD $6 for a meal for two. In Progreso and other coastal towns and villages, we eat at the fish restaurants where they serve delicious deep fried Grouper at a typical price of USD $10 for two people, with drinks. We eat in the market where the catch comes in, but there are plenty of fine eating places along the beach with exemplory service.

The history of Merida:

Merida was founded in 1542 by the Spaniard Francisco de Montejo.

Merida was built on top of the Maya City of T'ho. The Mayan buildings were dismantled and the huge stones used as the foundation for the cathedral and other colonial buildings. Tour guides will point out the original stones as they show you around the Plaza Grande – a free service from outside the Plaza’s tourist office.

My stay at Maya House in March 2014

Review submitted: March 26, 2014   Date of arrival: March 2, 2014

My stay in the Maya house in Merida was like a little slice of paradise. With all the comfort and convenience of home my stay went all too quickly! The house was bright and cheery with plenty of room for guests. The living room had a sleeper couch, TV and an air conditioner if you need one. It had a fully equipped kitchen with pots and pans and cooking utensils. The dining room/conservatory led into the charming back garden through an ornate metal gate. I must say that my favorite way to unwind was to slide into the dipping pool in the garden and read a book. . There is even a hammock for the afternoon siesta and potted plants and shells to set the mood.. The master bedroom upstairs was fully furnished with comfort in mind. The balcony nicely decorated with flowering plants, table and chairs. The guest bedroom also upstairs had built in shelving and a balcony with hammock chairs ! To complete the picture a half bath in master bedroom and full bathroom downstairs with large shower. Warm sunny days, beautiful shell covered beaches in nearby Sisal and Progresso, and best of all the comforts of home in a spacious and attractive house. I do not speak a word of Spanish but had no problem communicating at the shops. The people of Merida are used to foreigners. They are extremely patient and kind. The local children in Merida don’t seem to have temper tantrums or screaming parents. They are treated like miniature adults and behave accordingly. My home is in the USA, so I am used to hearing negative things about Mexico. From day one I noticed a strong police presence and I felt comfortable walking to the market on my own . As the expats like to say, the only dangerous thing in Merida is the occasional rough sidewalk.

Adorable cute colonial house

Review submitted: March 6, 2014   Date of arrival: February 26, 2014

We wanted an affordable colonial authentic house as a base for us to explore Merida by foot and the surrounding beaches and historic sites by bus and rental car. This was perfect, with the added bonus of two small terraces and a garden with a little pool for when it got hot.
The house has a real Mexican feel. It also has hammocks and hooks for extra lounging. We had a great stay and will be coming back.

Maya House - highly recommended!

Review submitted: January 19, 2014   Date of arrival: January 16, 2014

We booked this lovely property for our stay in Merida and could not have been more pleased.
The house is very well maintained and clean. It is also fully equipped making our stay so much easier and enjoyable.
All descriptions were spot on, and our queries were handled very promptly.
We would definitely recommend this property, the house is very comfortable and it is located a short walk away from the centre and hubs of activity, but not in a noisy or busy area.
We particularly enjoyed the St Lucia square and the Grand Plaza, both had regional singers and dancers performing, and plenty of food and drinks.
Great experience!
