Vacation Rental Description

Only home on Great Duck Island, a pristine 260 acre wilderness island, 10 
miles offshore, due south of Northeast Harbor on Mt. Desert Island, location of 
Acadia National Park.  
 
The house, located on the northeast point of the island, is a two-story 
Victorian Gothic style cottage with 270 degree sweeping panoramic view of 
open ocean, the mountains of Acadia, sunrises & sunsets. The house is
so close to the ocean you can see waves crashing and watch the sunrise over 
the water while lying in bed.

The house has 1450 sq. ft., open interior plan, steep roofs, 8 gables, 
2 small, intimate second-story decks, and many large windows, all with 
breath-taking views. 

First floor: 
Living area, woodstove with glass door,  dining alcove and  double bed 
alcove.  Two twin beds are also available.

Second floor:  
Master bed alcove with cathedral ceiling, gothic-arched window and 
queen bed. Upstairs living/dining area with double bed futon couch, wood 
stove with glass door. French doors to east and west decks with spectacular 
sunrise and sunset views. Well equipped and supplied kitchen area with 
propane refrigerator and stove. Bathroom with tub and hand pumped shower 
and composting toilet.

Outside:
Deluxe outhouse with a spectacular view of the ocean and mountains. 
Outdoor solar shower,

The house has no running water. Water is provided in 6 gallon containers.
A generator is available for electic lighting or for special electrical needs.

Vacation Rental Amenities

Amenities include CD and tape player, TV, binoculars
gas & charcoal grills, hammock, outdoor furniture,   
electric ice-cream maker, hair dryer, iron, 
all dishes & cookware, All paper supplies: paper plates, etc 
extensive library of island related books, bird & plant guides
Sheets & blankets, but not towels are provided. Kerosene lamps provide 
lighting.  Two new Jotul woodstoves with glass doors allowing fire view
Generator available for special electrical needs and electric lighting.
Approximately 70 galllons of wash water is supplied in 6 gallon jugs 
per week.  
White wicker furniture: couch, loveseat, rocker, chair & footrest, 
chaisse lounge 2 coffee tables & 5 end tables.
Zodiac (for emergencies only)
Mooring available.

Activities and Attractions

Great Duck Island House is a spectacular oceanfront retreat and 
adventure. This is the perfect place for those seeking solitude and an intimate 
experience of nature.  Naturalists, hikers, meditators, writers, photographers, 
painters and those wanting to live deliberately without  the distractions of 
modern life will love this place.

Explore and enjoy granite cliffs, tidal pools, rugosa rose hedges, 
moss & wildflower gardens, seaside meadows and spruce forests. 
Watch eagles and seagulls fly. See baby gulls hatching. 
Listen to the sound of petrels chorteling in their borrows at night. 
Walk along the ocean's edge as the colors of sunset tint the mountains 
and watch moon rises over the ocean.  Wild rabbits live under the house & 
scurry around everywhere.  Hammock, outdoor furniture and many benches 
to invite you to sit and contemplate the changing ocean & 
weather. Complete privacy.

Property abuts 250 acre pristine wild-life preserve, with 
popple-stone beaches and steep cliffs. Preserve protects bald eagles, 
petrels, guillemots & eider ducks.  Renters (but not public) have 
access to paths across the whole island.

Additional cost for private transportation from Northeast Harbor to 
Great Duck Island arranged with Mount Desert Water Taxi.  Ask to visit 
the seal colony on Little Duck Island on the way out.
