We had a lovely stay at Sunset Cottage July 2012. In fact I was prompted to write this when I started to think about when to come back this coming summer. The upstairs bedroom (with a deck looking out to Casco Bay) is perfect for a couple. While we did not use them, small bedrooms on the main floor seem right for kids. I could recommend the cottage just on having an outside shower. What a pleasure!
Easy walk to "town" and the ferry (hmmm, whether to take the ferry to Portland for dinner, or buy lobsters at the dock. Such tough choices...). One alert. As a recovering lawyer I was put off by the lease terms, which could be abused by an owner/caretaker. But Mike and the owner were easy to deal with. This is not a fancy cottage, but I have nothing to good things to say about it. Please don't book the entire summer; I haven't made my reservations yet....

Sunset Cottage

Parking at the cottage is somewhat tight, but manageable. Upon entering the cottage, we found it to be adorable, very clean and well maintained. The kitchen is well equipped and even had the lobster pot and nut crackers for the lobster dinner we cooked. Note, the cottage provides you with details regarding recycling & non-recycling. Non-recycling has to be placed in specific bags. The cottage had only 1 of these bags. Additional bags had to be purchased at the island market for a nominal fee. The layout of the cottage is somewhat open. Off to the side of the living room is a staircase to the upstairs bedroom. The staircase leads directly into the bedroom. There is no entry door. Once in the bedroom you can access the balcony which overlooks the bay and beautiful sunsets. The other 2 bedrooms are directly off the living room. Both bedrooms have glass doors covered with lace curtains for some privacy. The living room has a futon which folds open to a full/queen size bed. There is also a daybed which sleeps one. Both of these were used on our stay and were very comfortable. The bathroom is also off the living room. The bathtub is the old fashioned tub with legs. The shower curtain surrounds the entire tub. I mention this as we had someone elderly on our stay who could not get in and out of the tub. The cottage does have the outside shower which is fully functional. The beach is about a quarter mile from the cottage. Entry into the water can be a little rough on the feet. Suggest water shoes, but can go in without. The beach is on the bay side so the water is calm. The stores, ferry and restaurants are approximately a mile from the cottage. This is a reasonable walk but difficult when traveling with the elderly. Suggest exploring the other side of the islands and the many paths which lead to the bunkers. Very interesting. We had rented bikes for 3 hours and easily explored the island including visiting the museum and walking through several bunkers. Also recommend renting kayaks. We found a kayak rental place on the beach adjacent to the commuter parking lot next to the ferry landing. We actually went out to Fort Gorges and back during this time. The kayaks were easy to maneuver and we actually had time to get out and explore Fort Gorges. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the cottage and on the Island. I would recommend this to anyone looking to get away from the daily grind.

Recommended for: age 55+, families with young children
