vacation rental description

Note:   Single nights may be booked in some situations but are subject to Owner/Manager's discretion. Gateway Stay 2 bedroom/2 bath vacation rental, which can accommodate 6
guests, is part of  ARCATA STAY LODGING NETWORK OF EXCEPTIONAL
ACCOMMODATIONS. This is a 2nd story apartment in a historic building in a
great central location, 2 blocks from the Humboldt State University
Gateway at 14th Street and L.K. Wood Boulevard, one half block from
Wildberries Marketplace (like a Whole Foods Market but locally owned), 2
blocks from the Northtown shopping and restaurant district, and 4
blocks from Arcata’s downtown plaza square.  Leave your car and stroll
to boutiques, eateries, galleries, nightlife venues, movies, the Arcata
Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary, Redwood Park trails, and HSU campus.  Gateway
Stay is 1000 square feet, and was re-modeled and newly furnished in
April/May 2013; our first Arcata Stay guest occupied the apartment over
Memorial Weekend.  The owners painted throughout and installed new
stainless steel appliances, lighting sconces and chandelier, plumbing
fixtures, counter tops, wood floors, Marmoleum, bedroom carpet,
hardware, baseboards, blinds, and window treatments.

Gateway Stay is a historically unique and very special property. The
apartment occupies the second story of a lovingly restored 1906
Neoclassic Craftsman home, custom built as his own residence by
renowned architect/builder Nelson Johansen.  Johansen was responsible for
designing and building a variety of Arcata’s finest residences and retail
buildings around the turn of the 20th century, especially in what
locals call the “top of the hill” neighborhood, on G and H Streets
north of Arcata Plaza.  During his early building years, Mr. Johansen
saved the finest curly redwood and burl panels found in his trade. He
crafted this beautiful wood into his home and it is evident throughout
in multi-light windows, doors, and trim.  The soaring vaulted ceiling in
the redwood great room is solid redwood, as are cabinets, book shelves,
and cupboards, lending a lodge-like atmosphere to the space.  Beautiful
oiled bronze sconces up-light the ceiling, enhancing its many angles
with reflective warmth.

The lofty redwood great room is a splendid space, constructed
with a myriad of open rafter and beam angles, finished with
oiled bronze hardware, and new wood floors.  It is open floor
plan with ample lighting; truly, the room glows.  The color
palette is warmly neutral, enhanced by original art pieces (some by
local artists), a hand-tufted Craftsman-inspired oriental carpet, lovely
sheer window treatments, and luminous art glass lighting.  Though not
presently functional,  a historic artifact found in the redwood great
room is the cast iron wood stove, original to the home's construction.
Once located in the basement, the stove heated the entire residence with
a ducting system similar to how we heat with forced air today, but
state of the art for its time.  Visitors can gather together in this
room in the comfortable conversation area and watch flat screen TV,
enjoy group meals at the dining table which expands with built-in
leaves, and indulge their gourmet creativity in the fully equipped
kitchen with tile/butcher block island, gas cook top, Jenn-Air grill,
dishwasher, refrigerator with dispensers and ice maker, built in oven
and microwave, and plenty of cupboard space.  At the sink counter,
guests can look out the window and experience the ever changing view of
Arcata Bay skies and tides.

Both spacious and bright bedrooms feature new furnishings:
memory foam mattresses, sumptuous linens, chenille spreads,
duvet comforters, ample down pillows, and nightstands with
storage and reading lamps. The front bedroom has a king bed, a
large closet, bath ensuite with antique porcelain soaking tub, and a
separate desk area.  The back bedroom has a queen bed, an entire wall of
closets, television, bath ensuite with a walk in shower and multi-jet
shower head, and a built in counter sink with cupboard storage in the
main room.  The front-loading “high efficiency” stainless steel laundry
center is in a small room adjacent to the back bedroom.  The sofa in the
great room can convert into a double bed which can accommodate 2
additional guests.  Other amenities include wireless internet, expanded
cable TV, DVD library, 2 computer work stations, introductory kit of
coffee and tea service, spa robes, magnifying mirrors, bath products,
umbrellas, hair dryers, books, games, tourism information, and dining
menu guides.
