Coastal Maine is famous for lobster which is prepared in many delicious, creative dishes- or traditionally steamed & savored with melted butter. It's possible to buy them right at the lobsterman's co-op on the docks down town, bring them home cooked by them, or live for you to cook yourself! Don't skip steamed clams! If oysters are your thing, don't miss our locally cultivated (& shipped all over world) oysters- especially those from the Damariscotta River.Or join a boat excursion to Cabbage Island for an authentic lobster & clam bake!

Restaurant's that we frequent and enjoy include: Rocktide (on Atlantic Ave, East side of the harbor), McSeagulls (on Pier One,live music 7 night's), Dunton's Doghouse (Sea St), The Ice Cream Parlor (Pier One by McSeagulls), Robinson's Wharf and Pub (on Southport Island, just over the bridge).Good pizza: Village House of Pizza, across from Hannaford. Le Garage in Wiscasset is an old favorite, consistently good with a clever chef and the menu changes. In Damariscotta we haunt King Eider's Pub:Great crab cakes, but everything is very good, colorful too! Hit Route One North & head for Moody's Diner in Waldoboro for classic good food all day & night.

Boothbay also offers other cuisine: authentic Italian (chef summers here but is from Italy) Italian, Vietnamese, Chinese, tapas, traditional American and even a few good pizza joints! We always suggest that guests come well prepared with clothing for a broad range of temperatures and moisture (we are known for fog, and quirky, oft changing weather!), clothing that can be layered. Pants and sweaters may start the day but turn warm for shorts and tank tops later! It is always cooler on the ocean, a good 10 degrees. So even in the height of summer warmth, an ocean boat ride will be much cooler! My advice? Always leave shore with a jacket and sunscreen!
    • parking for rv/boat/trailer
      • We have additional level parking on an upper lot above the cottage. Perfect for secondary cars, trailers or even an RV, all of which have been done by previous guests from time to time. Electric mixer and electric knife(!), oven mitts, grilling equipment, even spices! Everybody asks: yes, there is a BIG lobster pot, and a few other big pots for steamers and corn on the cob (although I've found that corn in wet husks cooks wonderfully at 75 seconds per ear in the microwave, in a plastic grocery bag for steaming ability!)
  • Dining
    • dining area
  • Bathrooms
    • 1 bathroom
    • bathroom: toilet, shower, great water pressure in shower!
      • In 2011 we remodeled the bathroom with a spiffy new shower which has great water pressure! We & many other guests, have enjoyed the spectacular hydrotherapeutic effect of this great shower with remarkable water pressure & hot water! Obviously there is a toilet & sink as well. This small room cannot accommodate a bath tub, so it's a standing shower unit for now. A window at eye level provides natural light, views to the south & lake, & fresh air without compromising privacy! We do ask that guests be conservative with regard to flushint; the 'grandfathered' septic system,as it is small & fragile--but does fine so long as it is not taxed! Showers drain to a different area-no worries or 'restrictions'- here. But with water being a precious resource, please be 'green' and respectful of our resources. We ask everyone and we ourselves to please use it as needed but not wastefully especially in light of 'thinking and living green.' Thank you in advance. The planet thanks you also!

Awaken to song birds in the surrounding forest, bullfrogs & crickets at the lake's edge. Ambiance abounds! Large picture window framing the lakefront is its own tapestry of changing art. You'll want to spend time relaxing on the dock, with coffee or wine, a book or binoculars.Gas heating system will warm the interior, plus you have a wood burning fireplace as well.Color TV provided with basic channels; radio and CD player.Cell phones have good reception inside the cottage, enhanced service from dock. Many great books of all varieties, board and card games. We encourage guests to refrain from electronic entertainment/distractions & to immerse themselves in the quiet of the lake, the wilderness of Maine & being together & simply 'being.'
  • Entertainment
    • television
      • Good quality Panasonic 21' color TV with an antennae hook up for 5 basic channels! We do have it connected to a DVD/VHS player. In my opinion, this whole set up ought not even be there, is. And it is all very basic for a reason! Many movies are at the cottage, both DVD & DHS.

      • We provide about 20 VHS movies and their is a DVD/VHS player machine connected to a 19' color TV in the living room. We also provide some DVD movies but unfortunately many of them were taken from their cases and never returned. So, we are more scrutinizing of our library materials now and have a security deposit requirement for all guests partly for this reason. We like to think that future guests will be more trustworthy with our belongings.

traveler reviews for this boothbay cottage rental

A great get-away spot!! (Response to 7-6-14)

Review submitted: July 16, 2014   Date of arrival: May 22, 2014

As a former resident of Boothbay Harbor, friend & house-keeper to this lovely lakeside rental, I think it unfair that Linda O. failed to mention that, despite her vacating the rental to stay in a motel for 5 nights, her middle aged daughter & partner stayed behind to enjoy those 5 nights-- on said sloped/uncomfortable double bed. After the owner made several attempts to show another queen size bed option via the pull-out sofa facing the picture window overlooking the lake, and offered to remove the plastic from the new bunk mattress (1 of 2 ), Linda O. insisted on staying at a motel. I think that having been in the midst of this unfortunate situation and listening to Kim readily offer to help remedy Linda O's issues, it was more of an interpersonal dynamic between mom, daughter & daughter's female partner. Sadly, asking a 70 year old to sleep on the bunk bed while the younger 40 somethings took the larger bed is incomprehensible to me, as well. So tragic for Linda O. as this really is a perfect rental on the lake for making beautiful memories. My family & I have enjoyed countless hours swimming, kayaking, fishing, playing board games and unwinding at this sweet lakeside cottage!

Review submitted: July 6, 2014   Date of arrival: May 21, 2014

I have stayed in lots of hotels, motels and VRBOs and have never written a negative review. Our experience on Knickerbocker Lake was not a good one. The view of the small inland lake with occasional loons was very nice. However, the beds were not! The bunk bed mattress is wrapped in plastic on a board and the double bed is old and sloped. Due to being unable to sleep on the bunk bed I rented a room at a motel for 5 of the 6 nights. Though I booked several months in advance I never received a contract as promised or any emails. The deck/dock was damaged and potentially dangerous. We were asked not to use the toilet as normal in order to save $ to have it emptied when full. We were told to bring our own linens and towels and there is no WI-FI, AT&T or Verizon signal. There is a large mouse/chipmunk hole in the door to the lake.

Just what we needed

Review submitted: March 30, 2014   Date of arrival: October 11, 2013

We stayed for about 5 days in Mid October and loved the place. Kim was there to meet us and was very friendly and nice. It was so private and we hardly saw anyone on the lake. We lucked out as the weather stayed nice for us, cool at night but usually sunny and warmer as the day went on. We enjoyed the kayaks and the canoe for exploring and fishing and also spent a few afternoons visiting Boothbay Harbor. While the cottage was small it was perfect for me and my wife and we had such a great time. We even visited the Botanical Gardens which were not to far away. We hope to come back in the summer and enjoy some more time here. Thanks Kim!
