activities and attractions in Coronado San Diego Area

Coronado Island is a village on a peninsula off the coast of San Diego, California. Coronado Beach in 2011 was ranked the second best beach in the United States and the number one family beach. The Coronado Shores Condominiums are situated on a strip of land, bordered on one side by the Pacific Ocean and on the other by San Diego Bay and Glorietta Bay.

Local activities in Coronado include world-class golf, bicycling, bird watching, boogie boarding, concerts in the park, fishing, hiking, library, local theater, parks, restaurants, sandy beaches with lifeguards, sailing, surfing, swimming, tennis and windsurfing. There are dozens and dozens of restaurants to choose from in Coronado alone, ranging from family restaurants to world-class gourmet dining at our personal favorite, Chez Loma. If you golf, Coronado has a beautiful 18-hole championship golf course. If you sail, the Glorietta Bay Marina is right next door. If you bike, there are bike trails all around the island. A 20-mile round-trip Rails-to-Trails bike path starts across from our condo. On Sundays in the summer, there are free concerts in the park. The local public library is excellent, with books, movies and internet access. Next door to the Shores complex, there is a new (summer 2007) municipal recreation center with basketball courts and outdoor swimming pool; a skate park is available in Tidelands Park. There is even winter ice skating at the Hotel Del Coronado from Thanksgiving through the New Year! And, of course, there is the Coronado Beach, with miles and miles of white sand, with Imperial Beach further down the Strand.

If you decide to leave the island and take the bridge over to San Diego, major Attractions in San Diego include Balboa Park, Scripps Birch Aquarium, Gaslamp Quarter, Legoland, Old Town San Diego, San Diego Museums, San Diego Zoo, SeaWorld, the Wild Animal Park. A day in San Diego might include visiting the pandas at the Zoo, enjoying Mexican food in Old Town, seeing a first-run play at the Old Globe Theater, and then ending up in the Gaslamp Area for the nightlife.
Wonderful restaurants are everywhere, specializing in fresh fish, Mexican delicacies and new American cuisine. An easy drive can take you north to Disneyland, east to the mountains and desert, or south to Tijuana, Mexico.

A few of the attractions within walking distance of our condo (see the hand-prepared, annotated and regularly updated Activities and Attractions Binders in our condo for more information and other attractions and activities):

  • Coronado Beach (voted the number two beach in America and the number one family beach), with lifeguards patrolling the beach from sunrise to sunset.
  • Watching the Navy Seals is easy; just sit out on our balcony and watch the activities, ranging from changing of the guard ceremonies, to sea/sand manoeuvers, to helicopter rescue training.
  • A long, lighted boardwalk that runs along Coronado Beach, starting at our condo and running north past the Hotel Del Coronado and multi-million dollar homes, suitable for walks, people gazing and exercising, both day and night.
  • Superb Public Golf Course 10 minutes away (greens fees from $13).
  • Water sports of every kind, including boat rentals, jet skis and sailing, are within walking distance of our condo, with rentals at several locations including the Coronado Marina and Yacht Club.
  • Fifteen miles of biking trails. Bike rentals are available at several locations. One Rails-to-Trails path starts just outside our condo and runs south to Oceanside Beach. Another circular route starts at our condo and winds around the Gold Course, under the Coronado Bridge to Ferry Landing, and back through Coronado Village.
  • The Hotel Del Coronado (a National Historic Site, and host to presidents, princes and Hollywood celebrities) is a 10-minute stroll along the ocean-side boardwalk. The Del has excellent restaurants and multiple shopping opportunities
  • Coronado has over 50 restaurants, many with Zagat ratings and several that are outstanding. Our condo has a Restaurants & Dining  Binder with restaurant reviews and recommendations that we update regularly. (San Diego is a “foodie” paradise with hundreds of restaurants, with multiple Zagat listings.)
  • Two live theaters: (1) Lambs Players Theatre on Orange Avenue, which draws visitors from across California; and (2) Coronado Playhouse, within one block of Coronado Shores.
  • Quaint, specialized local shops for browsing and shopping (including a first-rate bookstore).
  • An excellent Public Library that lends DVDs and books and has free Internet access.
  • On Sundays in the summertime, there are free concerts in Coronado Park. Families and visitors bring picnics, spread out chairs and blankets, and enjoy the music.

Coronado is only a few minutes from San Diego via either the Coronado Ferry that runs every 30 minutes or the free Coronado/San Diego Bridge. In San Diego you will find many attractions and activities. See the hand-prepared, annotated and regularly updated Activities and Attractions Binders in our condo for more details. Some of the most popular are:

  • San Diego Zoo and the Wild Animal Park.
  • Balboa Park.
  • Cabrillo National Monument on Point Loma.
  • San Diego Gas Lamp Quarter.
  • Sea World of California.
  • Sea Port Village on the San Diego waterfront.
  • Midway, the aircraft carrier, available for public tours on the San Diego waterfront.
  • Mexico (via the San Diego Trolley or a short drive).
  • The Old Globe Theater with world-class live theater is located in Balboa Park.
