quick facts

vacation rental description

Loon Lodge is a beautiful lakefront home on Long Lake, one of the most popular lakes in northern Michigan. The house is a remarkably secluded retreat; the property has more than 200 feet of frontage on the lake and the next closest house is more than 100 yards away, hidden by trees.

The house is directly on the lake; there is lovely swimming about fifteen feet from the house. The water is clear, and the bottom is a mix of sand and small rocks.

The house has a dock and a deck that looks over the lake. There is a mooring for your boat, and we provide a canoe and small dingy for you to use. You can explore the islands in the lake, watch the sunset from the deck or dock and swim whenever you want. There is also a small beach, the size of which varies with the lake's water level.

Loon Lodge has two large bedrooms and two baths, and comfortably sleeps up to 8. The house has new beds and linens, a gas grill, a new TV and DVD. Loon Lodge also has a new furnace and new washer and dryer.

Traverse City is close, just 15 minutes away. There are public tennis courts just down the street, and a public boat launch across the lake.

A few comments from our recent guests:

"After vacationing at various places on Long Lake for 41 years, my family found Loon Lodge to be our favorite spot."

"Had a great time!!! Caught 17 walleye, 3 nice pike and the largest smallmouth  bass I've ever caught (almost 5 pounds!!).  Great drives every day, awesome campfires and just all in all a great time."

"A week of relaxation and reconnection. We feel lucky to be able to visit this spot."

"I can't remember when we have been able to completely relax this much on a vacation."

"This is the fifth year in a row that my family has rented a cabin.  Each year we pick a different Michigan location. Everyone agreed that this was the best cabin ever. It was perfect."

activities and attractions in Traverse City Michigan

There is almost too much to do in a week.  You can swim in the clear waters of Long Lake, hike through the woods, relax on the deck or dock or beach, or paddle around the lake in the canoe.  The five islands in Long Lake are all public; they are great for exploring and picnics.

If you bring your own boat and launch it at the nearby public boat ramp, you can waterski or sail; Long Lake is a wonderful lake for water sports.

There are all sorts of activities in the area.  You can explore the Sleeping Bear Dunes, canoe on the Platte, Boardman or Crystal Rivers, visit bustling Traverse City, shop at the outlets, go to concerts at Interlochen Music Camp, visit the local wineries and bicycle around the area.

Great location but not so great experience

Traverse (LANSING)
Review submitted: November 28, 2011   Date of arrival: September 3, 2011

My family and I had stayed at the Loon lodge, Long Lake, Michigan for two nights. While the location was beautiful, unfortunately the condition of the lodge was below par.

The appliances in the kitchen, especially the toaster, microwave, and coffee maker were not cleaned after the previous guests had left and we could not use them. The kitchen sink was extremely dirty and we had to clean it by ourselves before we could use the kitchen. The living room was also unclean with dust and pet hair all over. The floor rugs and the upholstery were stained and battered and badly needed to be changed. While the bathrooms were useable, they were also not thoroughly cleaned after the previous guests.

Overall, we enjoyed the location but we were disappointed with the living conditions of the lodge. The owner was apologetic, but there was not much he could do at that point to resolve these issues. While the place has a lot of potential, I would not recommend it in its current condition. This place badly needs a thorough cleaning and updates.

Rejoinder: After coming back from our trip I spoke with the owner about the issues we faced. He expressed his concern and indicated this was an unusual situation. It appears that there was a problem with the cleaning service who did not do their job properly and the owners are hiring a new cleaning team. I believe that future renters will have a better experience at the lodge than what we did.

Recommended for: families with young children, families with teenagers, sight seeing

Owners response: We were disappointed to hear about these issues! We've been renting for several years and rarely encounter any troubles, so we were surprised and dismayed by this report. I spoke with this guest and offered to have the cleaner return, but since it was such a short stay we agreed it wasn't feasible.

In 2012 we will have a new cleaning team, new rugs, a new grill and new furniture. Loon Lodge is a special place and we work hard to keep it in top condition.
