activities and attractions in Harsens Island Michigan

Sunning, swimming, relaxing, fishing, boating, shopping, relaxing.
Golf and tennis. Miniature golf, bowling, horseback riding, more
golf, and more shopping nearby.
In hunting season, duck, goose, and deer.
Harsen's Island has no motels or hotels, and very few vacation
rentals, so do not expect a strip of tourist attractions, as the
population is about one third residents, and two thirds seasonal
residents. Do expect a friendly small town attitude, and a safe,
clean, and friendly environment to spend some time with your friends
and family-its plenty close enough to entertain day visitors, and
this
place is large enough to accommodate plenty of overnight guests.
There are three markets and a couple of bar/restaurants on the
island.
It is, for the most part, pretty quiet.
When you wake up in the morning and realize that you have full
control
of your very own spacious, modern, clean, and private vacation home,
you will likely pinch yourself to make sure you are not dreaming.
Grab a cup of coffee and take a walk down your dock, greeted by the
swans, ducks, and egrets likewise enjoying the calm clear blue waters
of the North Channel of the St. Clair River. Have a seat at the
patio
on the end of the dock, or lie in the in the hammock while you map
out your day.
Join the family for a quick breakfast on the patio, or in the air
conditioned comfort of the summer residence. Take a ride to one of
the markets for a morning paper.
Later, dive into the clear blue waters at the end of the dock for a
refreshing swim. Marvel at the water quality, the sandy bottom,
consider some snorkeling with the kids. Bring a boat? Take a ride
and get lunch at one of the waterfront restaurants. Do some tubing
in
one of the sheltered bays in the Flats.
Grab the fishing poles-pike and panfish off the dock, then use the
fishing boat to take a trip out to the Channel and bounce the bottom
for walleye.
Take a bike ride with the kids to the park, play some tennis, let
them
on the swingsets for a bit, maybe take a ride into town, enjoy some
of
the little shops, check out a book from the library if you cannot
find
anything you like at the house.
Think about dinner-go out or grille something quick?
Later, its roasting marshmallows and having a few cold ones around
the
campfire.
Tomorrow, do it all over again.

Fabulous Experience!

mte (Birmingham)
Review submitted: February 21, 2011   Date of arrival: February 19, 2011

An excellent all round experience! The house is lovely, clean and updated nicely. The property sits right on the shore and there is very easy access to the water and dock. The owner is great -- very accommodating, flexible and easy to work with. Stayed there with my husband and four kids, endless things to do for the kids to amuse themselves outside. Though it was winter, we could see the nice sandy beach right in front of the house, with shallow water for small kids to gradually wade in. We had a great bonfire at the fire pit on the beach too. Home is well equipped with everything you'll need and very centrally located. Ferry access is easy, there is a local grocery open nearby and prices were actually pretty good. We took a quick trip back to the mainland too, which was easy and quick -- there is a large Kroger just minutes from the ferry.

Would strongly recommend.

Harsens Island North Channel

scribe50 (Ann Arbor, MI)
Review submitted: April 28, 2010   Date of arrival: July 24, 2009

We highly recommend this rental. Our family has rented this home for a week each summer for the past several years. It is clean, spacious, comfortable, well-equipped and easily accomodates a large family. We've hosted a one-day family reunion each year with plenty of space for about 20-25 people. The owner is great -- flexible and responsive. It is easy to get there and easy living once you arrive. You can pick up groceries before boarding the ferry -- there is a supermarket very near the dock. There are also a couple of stores on the island where you can buy food and supplies but the selection is limited and the prices can be high. A former school on Harsens Island had been converted to a restaurant and we had a terrific Sunday breakfast there last year.

Bottom line: Harsens Island is a wonderful getaway if you're looking for a place to relax and rejuvenate and this home is an excellent spot to do it. Although Harsens Island is easily accessible from Metro Detroit, it feels like you've left all of life's stresses behind as soon as you board the ferry. Once on the island, you can do as little or as much as you please, be it enjoying the water from a comfortable chair under a shady tree, wandering into the town of Sans Souci or using the house as a base for day trips to Port Huron or other nearby towns. Last year, we took a boat tour from Port Huron into the St. Clair River and up into Lake Huron. But we spent most afternoons at the house watching boaters and wildlife, reading and napping. We're looking forward to another great week this year.
