activities and attractions in Anna Maria Island Gulf Coast Central
Anna Maria Island is a 7 mile long barrier island located on the
west coast of Florida off the city of Bradenton. It is connected to
the mainland by 2 bridges and to Longboat Key to the south by
another bridge. With its temperate year-round weather and beautiful
beaches, Anna Maria Island has truly become a place that's gaining
recognition world-wide. Surrender your days to being entranced by
the warm lapping waters and sugarsoft sandy beaches.
Dining:
Anna Maria Island features many dining experiences, each with a
unique flavor. Offering a wide-selection of natural settings, Island
cuisine ranges from such international as British, French, German,
Italian, Oriental, and Spanish to Southern Florida seafood, spicy
caribbean sandwiches and even a restaurant rated as having the Best
Food on the Gulf Coast in the Zagat Guide and a Wine Spectator Award
of Excellence. Delectable seafood dishes are found everywhere! Oh,
yes, you can also get a good hamburger.
Shopping:
Terrific outlet malls are found within easy driving distance and
make for a wonderful day's outing. There are also local malls in
Bradenton and Sarasota for the typical department store and
nationwide chain shopping. Little boutiques can be found on the
island for that very special memory or personal gift for those back
home. St. Armand's Circle also is a great place to stroll, shop,
and eat.
Recreation:
A popular pastime in the area is fishing. Anna Maria Island offers
three fishing piers: Anna Maria, Rod & Reel and Bradenton Beach.
There are also professionally captained charter craft available to
fit any angler’s need.
If golf is your game then the Manatee/Sarasota bi-county area will
provide you with a choice of more than 45 courses ranging from tight
executive par threes to challenging championship 18's that will test
any golfer’s ability from tee to green. And if you want to improve
your game, the internationally famous David Leadbetter Golf Academy
is also located in Bradenton.
Tennis anyone? Grab your racquet and tennis shoes and head out to
the public courts in Anna Maria or Holmes Beach. Want to sharpen
your tennis game? Bradenton is the home of the internationally
famous Bollettieri Tennis and Sports Academy from where so many of
the superstars of today have trained and honed their competitive
skills. Daily and weekly lessons are available.
Recreational sailboat and powerboat rentals, including jet skis, are
available by the hour, the half day, and almost any other time frame
that might be required to meet the specific nautical needs of
boating families. And if you have never seen Anna Maria Island from
the air, hook onto one of the para-sail craft for the experience of
a life time. They run along the inner Bays as well as along the Gulf
shore.
The nearby mainland also hosts many educational attractions,
including Bishop Planetarium, Tourist Bureau & Information Center,
DeSoto National Park & Memorial Mansion, Manatee Players, The Art
League of Manatee County, The Asolo Center for the Performing Arts,
Ringling Museum of Art, Manatee Community College, University of
South Florida, Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, the Sarasota West
Coast Symphony, the Sarasota Ballet of Florida and the Jazz Club,
all of whom call Manatee and Sarasota counties home.
There are also 2 libraries on the island. Free trolley runs up and
down the island -- just hop on and off at your pleasure!
