vacation rental description

Spacious and elegant "la Maison Ursulines" is at the heart of Old Quebec's magnificent architectural treasures. Located on a quite, centrally-located street, this 2000+ sq ft, 11 room residence is within the ancient city walls, at the center of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and overlooks Upper Town's memorial square.  Visit MaisonUrsulines-com for Availability, Pricing, Special Deals,  a Visual Tour and more.

With next door neighbors including the 1804 Holy Trinity Cathedral
(modeled on London's St. Martin-In-The Fields and the oldest Anglican
church outside of Great Britain) just across the square, the 1722
Ursulines Chapel, Museum and Monastery right across the street, the
world famous Musee d'art Inuit Brousseau at the end of the street,
Battlefields Park (the world's tenth largest city park) just up the
hill, Notre-Dame Basilica just down the street ...and the Restaurant
Aux Anciens Canadiens (la Maison Jaquet, the oldest building in the
province) simply around the corner; this condominium home is at the
heart of the Ville de Quebec's historical treasurers.

Within two blocks of the Chateau, this 186 year old, 2-level home
totals over 1990 sq. ft. and provides the ideal home base for
exploring the surrounding town, for gracious entertaining and casual
lounging activities.

Located on a quiet street, the main entrance incorporates the first
level of a keyed building constructed of cut limestone in the Neo
Classical tradition. Upon entering, you are greeted by a pair of
carved wood and stain glass entry doors leading to a private interior
foyer ...the residence of Louis-Philippe Pelletier, Quebec's famous
Supreme Court judge and the judge in the trial of the King versus
Marie-Anne Houde.

This level has 12 foot ceilings plus restored original Corinthian
details and includes a living room with 9-foot high shuttered windows
(overlooking Upper Town's charming square), formal dining room
(seating for 12), complete kitchen, breakfast area, a full bath and a
library/office. Floors are antique narrow-strip polished natural
finish Canadian maple.

The lower level presents an intimate ambiance with its profusion of
rustic stone walls, decorative fireplace and hued wood beams. The three
bedrooms all have clerestory windows and polished walnut finished wood floors. The bathroom on this level is inset into a room with exposed stone walls
and features one of two contemporary glass shower stalls, ceramic tile floors and a refurbished period claw-foot tub.

Decorated with antiques, "over stuffed" country French furnishings
and an eclectic art collection; it's a sophisticated yet very
comfortable environment.

Shopping, dining, museums and cultural events are less than a block
away South to rue Ste Louis or one block North to rue Ste Anne. For
the best in fresh meats, produce, a good bottle of wine or a quick
snack; a great deli is just two doors away.

THE SUMMER SEASON
Reserve this elegant home for an unforgetable visit. The summer
months are a wonderfully mild season in this magical city with
special events daily including New France historical celebrations
just down the hill and the Changing of the Guard just up the hill in
La Citadelle. Throughout the summer, the Old City overflows with
window boxes and hanging flower baskets.

For high energy fun, consider The International Quebec City Summer
Festival that transforms Old Quebec into a giant outdoor stage. Over
500 shows of every description are held at some fifteen venues within
easy walking distance of this elegant accomodation.

WINTER FUN
It's also never too early to consider a winter fun and ski get-away.
This condominium home is an ideal balance between close-by world
class ski destinations like Mount St. Anne and Stoneham and great in-
town night life ...for a truly French/European Christmas season,
reserve this special home in December/January and have a magical
holiday.

Or join in Quebec's February Winter Carnival; the biggest winter
carnival in the world. Most events are right in the neighborhood,
with the world famous toboggan run less than three blocks away at the
Dufferin Terrace and The Governor's Walk.

THE "OFF" SEASONS
If art collecting, antiquing, or a quiet romantic get-away's the
goal, consider booking a stay during our off seasons. The crowds are
gone and the locals "retake" the cafes as Old Quebec slows down to a
pace that matches the changing seasons.

The streets and squares echo the horse-drawn carriages' passing as
the clip-clop melody passes right by the front door. The quiet
seasons also bring the city's old-world charm into focus as church
bells harken the passing days. It's a great way to sample the town's
timeless European tempo.

NOTES:
A. This elegant vacation residence is a "one-of-a-kind" in the old city
and return guests are already booking for next year. If this
accomodation meets your specifications, we encourage you to reserve
your stay very early; especially if your visit is to coincide with a
special event.

B. Please bring your favorite house slippers for use inside; it's an
old-world tradition that's friendly to the polished antique wood
floors. (In the winter, the municipal government keeps the streets
and sidewalks clear of ice and snow with the liberal use of salt and
chemicals ...it's great outside, but devours wood floors.)

C. For more information please visit www-MaisonUrsulines-com for
detailed information, a current availability calendar, rate guides, guest comments, festival information, a  currency calculator, useful links and even floor plans of la Maison Ursulines.

D. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email us. We
will gladly help customize your stay to meet your specific needs.

La belle maison dans la belle ville

Belle (Buffalo, NY)
Review submitted: October 30, 2012   Date of arrival: October 20, 2012

The location of La Maison Ursulines is ideal for any visit to Quebec City. It seems that "all roads lead to la Maison Ursulines" because it is so centrally situated in the heart of the city. The apartment was immaculately clean and spacious with exquisite and tasteful decor throughout. The bedrooms are comfortable with two of them nicely separated by a hallway that affords privacy between the rooms.

A library off the living is an ideal location to set up a laptop and access the complimentary wi-fi provided by the owner.

Although parking is not available on the property, a "hotel de ville" parking ramp is a short walking distance from the residence and offers covered parking at a reasonable rate.

This is a wonderful property that I would recommend to a family that needs 3 bedrooms or to friends who want to share an apartment and still have privacy with separate sleeping quarters and bathrooms.

Recommended for: adventure seekers, age 55+, families with young children, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sight seeing, tourists without a car, romantic getaway

Owners response: Belle,
Thank you for the kind words ..."all roads lead to la Maison Ursulines" ...thank you for such a delightful "tag line"! My favorite room is also the library; central to the Grand Level's living and diding rooms, but its very own quite niche, glad you enjoyed it too. Thank you again for choosing to stay at our vacation residence and for taking time to review our vacation home. Best, Paul

Too hot in summer

charles56 (Kailua, HI)
Review submitted: July 22, 2012   Date of arrival: July 15, 2012

The Maison Ursulines is a 3 story sandstone town house ideally located in the middle of old Quebec. Ground floor and basement only are rented.

From the website and photos give the impression the Maison Ursulines is a 4 star accommodation. In its current condition I rate it two stars. Most of the furnishings could be found at any flea market. While it was clean, there were signs of wear everywhere. Carpets faded and worn, old appliances, cheap and loose bath fixtures and elderly unfriendly floor plan.

The street level has high ceilings which might make it comfortable, even in the heat, except that the windows were old and jammed and shut. A single 6 inch fan was provided for cooling the entire living/dining area. Living room was small, providing comfortable seats for 3 and straight back chairs for 2 more. Nowhere for us all to relax? The big chair had brown grime on the arm. The couch was ripped. There is no balcony, garden or anywhere to escape other than the street. Dining room seats 8 at the large table. No parking is included in the rental, but there are other people’s cars parked inches from the dining room window, which looks onto a parking lot.

Wireless internet was fast. The kitchen small but well equipped, with a breakfast nook that was one of the best features of the house.

The bedrooms are accessed by a very narrow and steep stair, what you’d expect for a basement. Wait! All three bedrooms are located in the basement, a humid and steamy place during the recent heat wave. Floor fans provided some relief. Basement windows peek up from below street level and are not able to open. The larger bedroom has a comfortable king bed, table, closet and a man sized safe (locked). The second bedroom had a queen bed and seemed adequate.

The third bedroom has an old, hard and sagging queen bed jammed into a corner against a crumbling mason wall, no end table, drawers or closet. Hooks on the wall were the only place to put clothes. Eyeglasses and phone passed the nights on the floor! Room three also contains a squeaky washer and old dryer that took forever. (W/D was convenient but why in a bedroom?) This room might be fine for one or two small children to share, but was inadequate and ill equipped for 2 adults.

This property might be a good destination in cooler months, for a family with children and on a budget, but an ill choice for 6 adults in summer.

Recommended for: families with young children, families with teenagers

Quebec is a magical city

Review submitted: January 24, 2010   Date of arrival: November 10, 2009

When we told people we were going 7 hours north in the month of November for our honeymoon, they thought we were crazy, they were sure wrong. Quebec is a magical city… from the cobblestone streets, to the horse drawn carriages, to the stunning architecture, to the art galleries, antique shops and boutiques, to everyone ice skating at all hours of the days. It has felt like a winter wonderland and a beautiful, romantic European city all wrapped into one. Two days ago it snowed from noon to night. We literally pinched ourselves to make sure that all we were marveling at was real,.
Leaving will be bittersweet for us both. Bitter because we will miss la Maison Ursulines and the city of Quebec. We will especially miss the food, every meal was delicious as is evidenced by our enhanced girths. We will also miss this cozy and comfortable retreat that we return to often. It will be sweet to go home, see our dog and share all our pictures and stories with friends and family. We can’t wait to return.
