vacation rental description

This waterfront cottage has the perfect surroundings for a family getaway! Because it
is the last house on a dead end, nature is all around you here. There are
woods to walk through with a small waterfall and a babbling brook that runs
along side the cottage.
A large grassy front lawn can be used for all kinds of outdoor activities,
and best of all, the beach is level with no steps! There is a dock and rowboat
you can use and also a hoist if you bring a motorboat or rent one. The walk
out into the water is a very gradual one with no big drop offs, which is great for
small children. The best thing about this beach is not only is it level, but there are no weeds in the water, so a pleasurable swim is guaranteed! A short walking distance away (approx. 200 yards)down a
gravel road is a large green space with swings and room for volleyball, baseball, soccer, or flying a kite. It's a nice private road with very little traffic if the kids want to go for a bike ride.

The approximately 1000 square foot cottage has a wonderful open floor plan and boasts a very spacious living room/sunroom (14x20 ft) great for conversation or relaxation with nice views of the lake and stream. The living room leads out to a deck on the lakeside which has lounge furniture and dining with all the sounds of nature.

The kitchen is fully stocked with plenty of cookware/utensils and just off the
kitchen is a formal dining room with views of the lake through the living area. The kitchen and bath just got new flooring this year (2012) and looks great!
There are 3 bedrooms, one with a queen, another with two twins, another
with a double, a sofa bed is in the living room and there is one "rollaway" twin sized bed (like a cot w/mattress)you can place wherever you'd like. The shade from the large old trees around the cottage and the lake breeze keep it nice and cool so there is really no need for air conditioning.  We do have a couple of ceiling fans and portable oscillating fans if needed.

traveler reviews for this owasco lake cottage rental

A Very Pleasant Week

rentuc57 (Cortland, NY, USA)
Review submitted: July 10, 2012   Date of arrival: June 28, 2012

We enjoyed our vacation at the Brook House on Owasco Lake. The description is very accurate although I would agree with one of the other reviewers that it is a little tight for 8 people and may be more comfortable for 6. It had everything we needed, was clean and well kept, the owners were very friendly and responsive to our email and texts. We spent most of our time on the pleasant shaded deck and the small waterfront, enjoying the lake and gorgeous sunsets. The kayaking and swimming were great (bring water shoes for rocky bottom) but the fishing was not the best - we were told the water was too warm and you had to get out into the deeper water for better fishing at this time of year. Evenings we had a campfire on the beach which was also fun. Close proximity to Moravia and Auburn made it easy for those inevitable trips to the grocery store to pick up forgotten items. We also walked around the area, played frisbee in the big field and hiked in some nearby state forests (not within walking distance). I would recommend this rental property for small families or adult groups looking for a peaceful, laid back vacation. Although I think our teenagers had fun generally, they were somewhat antsy without any available internet (maybe a good thing?)or the usual teenage excitements.

Wonderful Vacation Rental

Lakelovers (Rochester, NY)
Review submitted: October 14, 2011   Date of arrival: August 31, 2011

I highly recommend vacationing at this wonderful cottage on Owasco lake. This is the second time my family of 5 rented this cottage and we loved every aspect of our stay. The cottage itself is adorable. It has a nice spacious dining room for meals and a very cozy living room to just kick back after a long day in the sun. We've rented more luxurious cottages before, but all of our friends and family agree that the charm of this place just can't be beat. Also, it has to be one of the best beach areas on the lake which is the most important aspect to renting. We just love the beautiful wooded surroundings. Our children were never once bored and they enjoyed the option of riding their bikes through the cove. We look forward to enjoying this cottage again as it is a top vacation destination for our family.

Brook House, Lake Owasco

Nana (Chimacum, WA USA)
Review submitted: August 31, 2011   Date of arrival: August 13, 2011

We chose Brook House for our family vacation because we loved the idea of a cove, a dead-end street, a row boat, dock and a safe beach for small kids. All of those things we liked and were as advertised. The house is charming but small - definitely a well worn cabin that has been used by perhaps too many guests. There were 7 of us (5 adults + 2 kids) and since the statistics said it slept 10 we thought it would be plenty big enough. The three bedrooms were tiny and though there were 2 roll-a-way beds in the closet, there was literally nowhere to unfold them except outside, when the hide-a-bed was in use. The roll-a-ways were so musty and unclean that we wouldn't have put the kids on them anyway. Coming from a rural background, we are not a squeamish or overly fussy family but the housekeeping and building repair was below standard. Every glass, dish and pan had to be washed before using. The BBQ was a mess. Most of the furniture, including the blinds, had something funky about it. The host did not provide any paper products and while it wasn't a big expense to bring our own, it was a pain in the neck to go get them. Guests are also asked to truck a huge garbage can, full from the previous guests, up a very long road on garbage day. Without a big car, it was a difficult, smelly and messy job. We felt that for high season rent we paid, we shouldn't have to haul garbage, that toilet paper should have been provided and that the furniture should have been in good working order. In summary, on the good side: we loved the beach and the lake; loved the quiet privacy and big yard; liked the decor and dealing with the pleasant owner. On the bad side: we didn't feel it was a good value; the housekeeping and maintenance needs to be vastly improved; it should be advertised as sleeps 6 not 10; and paper products and garbage removal should be provided.

Owners response: We were very taken back by this review. We always try to contact the renters a few days into their stay to see how they are doing, which we did do with this group, however, they did not return our call, so we assumed everything was fine. Upon return they emailed us and said what a wonderful time they had, so we were very surprised to see this.

There was a broken blind after their departure, that very well could have been overlooked by our cleaning lady if she did not pull it while she was there. It was easily fixed with a new bracket. As far as building repair/housekeeping, there is a screen door that didn't quite shut right that we had to fix after the busy summer season. The furniture is very comfortable and in great shape, and the beds are really firm and comfortable, so not sure what is meant by that. A bath vanity kick-board needed fixing when they left so maybe the vanity, door and blind were what they were referring to.

As a result of this review I did edit the listing so that it now says that it has approx. 1000 square feet . This way people don't have to imagine the size of the cottage. I also did reduce the number of persons that it sleeps to 8 vs. 10. It does have a nice big open living room and dining room, not to mention a decent sized kitchen, so plenty of living space. The bedrooms are small, typical sized cottage bedrooms. It's a very cute place and nicely decorated with a mix of antiques, modern furniture, pretty quilts, and decor.

With every week booked in the summer months, there is only a 3 hour window for our wonderful cleaning lady to work her magic. She is very meticulous, but does not have time to wash dishes already put away in the cupboards every week or clean the gas grill. We ask each group to please wash dishes before vacating and also clean the grill. She would never leave dirty dishes in the sink but does not look through ones that are put away in the cupboards. She does a very thorough cleaning of the whole house and even does the laundry. She washes all the sheets and towels so that people don't have to do laundry before they vacate.

Unfortunately we are in a remote area and the only garbage service comes on Tuesday mornings. They do not pick up at the cottage, so yes the garbage must be brought out to the main road and some of it will be from the previous tenants the week before. There is really no way around that.
