Our Gayfield Square apartment is our fabulous two bedroom property situated in a fantastic position, right in the heart of our wonderful historic city. In fact you couldn't get better - the apartment is located on a beautiful leafy square in the elegant Georgian New Town. Residential and quiet, yet just a few minutes walk (about seven) from the hustle and bustle of Princes Street and George Street and from there easily accessible to the castle and Royal Mile. Moreover, we're just round the corner from the funky Broughton Street area with its great selection of restaurants, cafes and bars as well as some lovely 'local' and quirky shops (the best butcher in town, great health food store and fishmonger to name a few!)

The apartment is typical in design for its era, dating back to 1820 (yes, 1820!) and built with the grandeur that represents Georgian architecture in its prime. It's also quite a one off with its own private entrance, private front garden and back patio (very unusual for a property in such a central location of Edinburgh). The entire apartment is on the ground floor with only one step up into the front garden so is very accessible for those who have difficulty in managing stairs.

Interior style is sophisticated, contemporary and calming with a lovely blend of old and new.

The main sitting room is a very spacious 16 x 13 feet with beautiful working fireplace (living flame gas fire), ornate cornice work and double windows with views to the front gardens and square beyond. Furniture comprises a comfortable sofa and contemporary Barcelona chair both in white leather as well as two antique gilt chairs upholstered in a bold print motif. Original art pieces hang on the walls throughout the property.

The bedrooms are quietly located with cosy European king sized leather bed in one and white wooden Georgian style bed in the other, again European king sized. Wall coverings are in calming taupe and pale mocca colours.

One bedroom is serviced by an en suite shower room with walk in shower with chocolate leather effect tiling. The other is serviced by the main bathroom with corner bath and shower.

The kitchen is fully equipped - a large range cooker/oven, microwave, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer - a great cook's kitchen as well as being a very sociable space to sit round the large black granite kitchen table whilst you eat or watch the cook at work! French windows from the kitchen open up to the back patio/sitting area.

We also supply a complete pack in the apartment which will guide you through how to use everything and also a great guide to our favourite restaurants, cafes, shops and top tips on things not to miss out on while you're visiting. Wifi internet access is available throughout the apartment.

      • There is one step into the garden of the property from the street and then one small step at the front door- otherwise the apartment is ground floor throughout and easily accessible.

Best of all the travel decisions I made was to stay here

At the airport, our driver said right off "great neighborhood!" That was a great start and an understatement. We were a little stunned when we arrived to find that the photos could not do the apartment justice and everything was even more beautiful while still very comfortable. There's plenty of storage so you really shouldn't live out of a suitcase here, and a beautiful kitchen to have breakfast or meals at "home." We were extra happy to be able to do laundry, with both a washer and dryer, while there to avoid bringing extra clothes. There's a garden tub to soak in in the hall bathroom and a large rain shower in the master bath. Future travel will be difficult after staying in this very spoiling apartment within walking distance to everything.

Tip: if you sleep in the front bedroom, consider leaving the shade up. There is a gated front yard so no one can see in and you'll wake up with the most stunning light and the sounds of children and dogs playing in gayfirld square, even in the dead of winter.

We easily walked to Holyrood palace, the royal mile, edinburgh castle, Arthur's Seat, and as far as the festival theater with little effort. When it rained, city cab and central cab have an app for your smart phone and worked perfectly through the wifi available in the apartment. We didn't need to use the available phone provided at all. We got a massage a block away on broughton, and ate on the same block often. The lion king was playing across the street and the omni complex is next door along with several friendly pubs. If you whip out a paper map, people will stop and ask if you need directions in this neighborhood. There is a police station next to the apartment that was very quiet but made us feel even more safe just being there.

This place seemed too good to be true, and I was honestly worried about it because of that. Fortunately it turned out to be the very best decision I could have made for my family and it was the base for an amazing 8 days in Edinburgh, to which I am told by my husband that I have to find a way to match or exceed for our future travel. This will be a daunting task to beat 3 gayfield Square. I've traveled half my 44 years on earth and this one was by far the best of the best. If you're still considering accommodations in Edinburgh. Stop. You found it.

Recommended for: adventure seekers, age 55+, families with young children, people with disabilities, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sight seeing, tourists without a car, romantic getaway

The best and only place to stay in Edinburgh.

We had such a wonderful time at this apartment. It is even better in person than in the pictures. Close to everything. We enjoyed walking to the center of the City where we could access any site by tour. The neighborhood was quiet, but within steps to the theater, pubs and a Tesco for shopping needs. We walked up Calton Hill (a must for a view you would not believe). The apartment was clean, comfortable and had every amenity we needed. Robin responded very quickly to a minor issue. If we are ever lucky enough to get to Edinburgh again, we would not stay anywhere else.

Recommended for: age 55+, tourists without a car

Great accomodations, excellent location.

My wife and I and a family friend stayed here. With two bedrooms, this was a perfect arrangement. The location is very good and provides easy access to many of the city's most popular sights. We were able to walk to just about everything we wanted to see. If you don't want to walk, there is ample public transportation nearby. There are restaurants just around the corner and the owner, Robin, provides a very informative guide with recommendations. Everything in the unit was very clean and tidy. The decor is as nice as the photos suggest. If you drive you can park on the street for an hourly fee for up to 4 hours. You can also park free overnight if you can find a space there on the street. We parked several blocks away for no charge. It was about a 10 minute walk.

We would definitely stay here again! Thanks Robin!
