This newly-built Timberframe home is on Dyer’s Island (accessible by
bridge) about 2 miles from town. It is a brand-new reproduction of
an antique cottage and sits on 6 semi-wooded acres with
a beautiful southerly view of Hurricane Sound and Outward Bound's
Hurricane Island. Raspberry bushes line a trail that leads to the
private 250-foot sand and rock beach in front of the property. The
ferry passes in front of the house many times daily, and lobster
boats frequently check traps just off the rocks.
The house has one bedroom downstairs with a full bed, a loft with 2
twin beds (accessible by ship's ladder), and a second loft with a full bed
(accessible by staircase), full kitchen, bath with shower, outdoor
shower with hot and cold water, and screened-in porch that faces
south. The southern exposure, open design and many special features
give the house a light, spacious feel: post & beam cathedral ceiling,
whitewash pine walls, soapstone counters, red birch cabinets, and
maple and tile floors. Please, no smoking, no pets.
TV/VCR/DVD player, microwave, phone, full kitchen,
charcoal grill, propane lobster cooker, washer, linens and bath
towels included (please bring your own beach towels).
The ferry ride from Rockland to Vinalhaven is a stunning 75 minute
trip across Penobscot Bay, lobster capital of the world. Once on
the island, you will really feel like you are “away," yet the town
offers all the basics and more: grocery/liquor store, restaurants,
gift shops, bank, post office, hardware store, video rentals, library,
medical center, and even a new school playground (though we always
tell our kids the playground is on the beach).
Island life is slow-paced and hosts many ideal vacation activities:
swimming at the fresh water quarries (kid friendly), kayaking (trips,
lessons, and rentals are available in town), town sandy beach, nature
preserves, historical museum, biking (bring your own or rent), art
gallery, lighthouse, many trails for hiking and wildlife viewing,
nearby uninhabited islands to explore, an ice cream shop, and the
candy/toy store "Go Fish."
Memorial Day weekend-Labor Day weekend: $1500/week or $1400/week for
2+ weeks. Off season: $1250/week.
