Solitude and rejuvinating water makes this an ideal relaxing
Eco-topian vacation!
This Caribbean style house stands right on the waters edge of
stunning Lake Bacalar, also known as the lake of the seven colors
for its multi hues of blues, tourquoise and greens reflected in the
waters depths. Not many lagoons in the world contain crystal clear
fresh waters with the colors of the Caribbean sea, while monkeys,
tapirs, toucans, wild parrots and orchids inhabit the lake shore.
In 2005 the north shore of this 40 mile long lake was declared a
protected biosphere by the Mexican government. Manatee in the Moon
sits right in the middle of this pristine area.
It is the perfect place for lovers, adventurers and those
seeking a unique and peaceful retreat. This cabana is solar powered
and cooking is a pleasure in the fully equipped kitchen with propane
refrigerator and stove/oven. The dining area has a lake
view. Sleep peacefully with the lull of the waves and awaken to the
chattering calls of tropical birds. Full bathroom has hot water
shower. Enjoy swimming, kayaking, sailing, bird watching, nature
photography, hiking at nearby Mayan ruins, star gazing and just
relaxing at your private get away.
Dwell in the peace and quiet while swinging in your hammock
with its breath taking 360 degree view from your wrap around deck.
A descending walkway through the branches of a large tree lined with
orchids takes you to your own private dock with easy acess to the
water. The water is crystal clear, warm and inviting. Clothing is
optional while sun bathing as you will not be disturbed. Guests
staying at Manatee in the Moon have commented they felt they had the
whole lake to themselves and have rated their experience with five
star swimming reviews! If you are seeking privacy and complete
relaxation this is the ideal vacation for you.
Manatee in the Moon provides complimentary kayaks for your
pleasure in exploring. An easy kayak ride to the uninhabited side
of the lake is the best chance to see wildlife especially at
sunrise or moonlit nights. An easy walk down the road or paddle by
kayak is The Laguna Azul restaurant cabana/campground which is run
by a friendly German/Canadian. The Laguna Azul has great food and
world renowned margaritas. For those seeking social interaction it
is popular with locals and other travelers.
Directions from Cancun airport are simple. You will be on the
same highway all the way until you turn off on a good dirt road that
leads you to the lake shore of the north end of Lake Bacalar. Drive
time
is approx. 4 hours. Take highway 307 South that leads you past the
tourist corridor of the Maya Riviera. Past Tulum and away from the
maddening crowds you will enjoy seeing the real Mexican country
side. As you arrive in the town of Fillipe Carillo Puerto you can
experience an interesting market with fresh produce and homemade
tortillas. Continue past the town of Limones until you reach the
little town of Pedro Santos where friendly locals are selling
delicious pineapples and freshly squeezed fruit juices. Look for
kilometer 59 at the microwave tower and turn left at a good passable
unpaved road that meanders through pineapple and coconut fields and
then the same road takes you through a neo-tropical forest arriving
at the lakeshore. Approx. 2 miles. (note: Most Bacalar rentals are
located in the southern end of the lake near or in the town of
Bacalar.) We are at least thirty minutes drive time before the town
and away from any noisy highway. We are offering you a totally
unique natural experience. Further check in info. will be provided
after booking your stay at Manatee in the Moon. Email inquiries are
welcome.

activities and attractions in Bacalar Yucatan
Go for a morning walk in the jungle and watch the toucans and
oropendolas harvest their breakfast from the trees. Relax in a
hammock and read a book. Go for a swim and lounge in the sun. Give
yourself the luxury of a nap. After the sun goes down, take a cold
drink and a bowl of freshly popped popcorn down to the dock and
watch
stars so bright you can see their reflections in the water. After
you
eat the last delicious kernel, kayak by starlight. It's fantastic.
If
you are lucky enough to be in Mexico for the full moon, light some
candles and eat on the deck. Watch the big orange moon rise across
the lake, turn white and send a shimmering moonbeam over the water
directly to you. It doesn't get any better.
If you can pull yourself away from the lake, you will be
enchanted by the Mayan ruins of Chacchoben, Dzibanche, Kinichna,
Calakmul and Kohunlich, all within several minutes to several hours
from Manatee-in-the-Moon. You will be enveloped in another era as
you
walk beneath the magnificient prehistoric palms of Kohunlich. The
tour buses have not made it there yet and these palms are a 'must
see.'
The town of Bacalar is 30 minutes away and the Carribean coast
is 45 minutes from your house. The capital city of Chetumal and the
Belize Free Trade Zone are an hour to the south. The international
airport in Cancun is four hours to the north. The little village of
Pedro Santos is two miles away. In Pedro Santos you will find a
bakery filled with delicious breads, cakes and cookies and five
grocery stores where you can buy tender, organically grown beef,
fresh fruits and vegetables, beer and alcohol and all your basic
cooking supplies.
Too tired to cook after all that swimming? Laguna Azul's
restaurant is 10 minutes on foot or by kayak. You can tie your boat
up at one of three docks and eat delicious American style food and
drink one of Fritz's big and icy cold margaritas. If you have a
craving for excellent German food, go to Vieja Bavaria just minutes
away on the road to Merida. Pedro Santos has three restaurants
serving Mexican style food or go to Jack's Restaurant for the best
hamburgers around.
