Pisa, famous all over the world for its Leaning Tower which
dominates and exalts the magnificence of Piazza del Duomo, boasts a
millenary history which mostly developed at the time of the Maritime
Republics. Pisa is a real jewel- case with its roman and gothic
churches, its squares and palaces that give splendour to the old
streets and to the quarters winding along the Arno. It is one of the
most important university towns thanks to its several and different
faculties and the well- known "Scuola Normale" in Cavalieri Square.
Sightseeing Pisa you will not only discover art, history, culture
but natural environments too such as Migliarino Park, San Rossore,
the Coast, Monte Pisano; all of them offer a charming scenery to the
traveller.
The sea and... a surprise.
An unexpected oasis, the natural park of San Rossore.
In the varying landscape along the Tuscan coast, this forest by the
sea
is really quite extraordinary.
Once upon a time this area was covered by the sea and the home to
prehistoric sharks, but today we meet fallow and roe deer, boars and
foxes in the unspoilt woodland.
Just think, a dense web of pine, oak, poplar and ash protected by
high sand dunes with oyster catchers, gannets, ducks and seagulls
flying overhead. And all this just half an hour away from important
cities of art.
After immersing yourself in nature, the riviera of Tirrenia and
Marina di Pisa await you.
A strip of quartz beach, with thick pine woods giving a sense of
calm and behind you Pisa and its imposing monuments.
This is a chance you cannot miss, not just because of Piazza dei
Miracoli and the famous tower, but also for other superb treasures
such as the Certosa at Calci with its natural history museum.
To reach the sea once more you can take a walk along the last
stretch of the Arno and at the mouth watch eel fishing and taste
their delicious flavour
Calci rises along the course of the Zambra torrent, between the
cities of Pisa and Lucca.
The local economy is mainly based on the agriculture, sheep-farming
and on the activity of numerous industries working in the textile
and tanner fields and for the production of building materials.
The place name probably comes from the word "calce" (lime), with
reference to some lime furnaces, anciently active.
The first residential settlements in the area of Calci go back to
the Roman Age: at that time the locality was known with the name
of "Locus Calcis", with reference to the plenty of local lime caves.
During the Middle Ages rose the first religious buildings under the
jurisdiction of the Bishopric of Pisa, whose around the community
gathered and started to build its houses.
During the same period the community started to develop the local
economy, thanks to the close torrent, along which flourishing
trading activities took place.
Later along the torrent also rose the first mills and artisan
workshops for the manufacturing of wool and leather.
Between the XII-th and XIV-th century the village of Calci hosted
some saints like Saint Alexander, Saint Jacopo and Saint Verano, who
stayed there for a long in solitude and prayer.
After the collapse of the Republic of Pisa, occurred on the XVI-th
century, the village of Calci became property of the Republic of
Florence, being this latter under the Medici's government.
Although the village was annexed to the Florentine domains, it
continued showing its faithful to the Pisan power and because of
this it was punished by being united to the territory of Vicopisano,
thus losing its autonomy.
At the beginning of the XVIII-th century the village passed by
heritance to the Lorena's Dukes, who saved the previous territorial
organization so that Calci conquered again its autonomy just after
the Unity of Italy occurred on 1861 by the King Vittorio Emanuele II
of Savoia.
Among the most important monuments to see in Calci we point out here
the Certosa (Certosa Convent) and the Pieve Romanica (Romanic
Parish).
Among the numerous celebrations periodically taking place in Calci
we remind here the traditional "Chestnuts Festival" held yearly on
October, during which it is possible both to taste some good typical
foods and wines and to admire the fine local artistic artisan
objects.
The Certosa of Calci
The Certosa was built as an enclosed convent. It was restored and
enlarged between the XVII-th and XVIII-th century.
Once entered into this big building, it is possible to visit
numerous suggestive rooms: the first one is the "Entrance Hall",
surmounted by a statue portraying "Saint Bruno", who was the founder
of the Certosine Order. On its right side opens the Saint Sebastiane
Chapel, whose inside it is possible to admire some frescoes dating
back to the XVIII-th century.
Inside the Certosa, a fouteenth-century church opens on a large
square. The religious building shows a rich facade with marble-made
decorations and it is preceded by a flight of stairs.
The interior of the church has just an aisle and along its walls
decorated as frescoes it is possible to admire "Bible's Stories"
painted by different artists and some stalls that were carved by
Marco da Villa.
Close to the main altar there is a fine shovel by Baldassarre
Franceschini (1611-1690), called the "Volterrano" (from Volterra),
portraying the "Virgin Mary, Saint Bruno and other saints".
From the right side of the church it is possible to reach the "Big
Cloister", being this latter a large square whose middle there is a
fountain made by Feliciano Bianchi. Close to the "Big Cloister"
rises the "Little Capitural Cloister", from which it is possible to
enter in the Refectory, whose inside it is possible to admire fine
frescoes like a "Last Supper" painted by Bernardino Poccetti (1553-
1612).
The Grand Ducal Guest-Quarters is a part of the Certosa. It was
built at the end of the XVIII-th century as a place where to host
the Tuscan Grand Dukes during their stays. The building consists of
three rooms that were entirely painted with by Pietro Giarrè and of
a large terrace from which it is possible to enjoy a wonderful sight
on the Pisano mount and on the whole city of Pisa.
Lucca among the "State Towns" of Tuscany, is the only town which
could maintain its indipendence till 1847. It is the true evidence
of the loving care of the nobles from Lucca who protected the
freedom of the "Civitas" with its intact Walls as a platform (XVI-
XVII Cent.), having a perimeter of Km. 4250 with 10 bastions, and
the terraces partly preserved. In the medieval town surronded by
walls, artistic and historic monuments stand out, as the Roman
Amphiteatre, The Basilica of San Frediano, The Square and the Church
of St. Michele , The Cathedral of St. Martino with the "Holy face"
and the Tomb of "Ilaria del Carretto" engraved by "Jacopo della
Quercia", the Guinigi Tower, Fillungo Road, the Ducale Palace in
Napoleon square, last evidences of the Principato of Lucca.
This long stretch of sand called Versilia offers a wealth of ideas,
temptations and inspiration.
A trail of towns hallowed by decades of legendary guests.
All these places have lots in common: ever green countryside, cool
even under the fierce August sun, the seaside with shallow sea to
suit all ages, the colourful bathing areas, bars and meeting places
that make the news now as they did in the past.
But Versilia is also full of individual touches.Forte dei Marmi has
a more fashionable outlook.
There are so many stories to tell about this beach, which also
represents a way of life.
Life here means high society and shopping, relaxation and a stroll
in the centre, sunbathing on the beach and diving into the nightlife.
Viareggio is famous, and quite another kettle of fish.
Viareggio is its carnival which has become an international
attraction, strolling, looking in the shop windows, the liberty-
style buildings, the elegant cafés, the welcome of the townsfolk,
waiting year after year for the start of the summer and the emotion
to be here again.
In Pietrasanta you breathe an air of culture and intellect -
sculptors and their pupils chat in the cafés and there are works of
art scattered in all corners.
With the white marble of all this art still fresh in your mind you
will arrive at Camaiore, wedged between the cool, green
Walking and Biking
The Tuscan landscape offers a vast choice of sport and leisure
activities. The region stretches from the Appenine mountains of
2,000 metres, that hide ski fields and challenging climbs, to the
gentle Tirrenean sea, and an archipelago of islands to explore by
sailboat. In between you will find rolling hills, sweeping plains
and lush forests to traverse by foot, bicycle or horse. Contrary to
popular belief there is more to do than visit quaint villages and
sampling local produce. Every season offers plenty of activities.
Travellers to Tuscany are spoilt for choice for opportunities to
learn or play every kind of sport, at all levels, and for all ages -
from skiing to sailing, to horse riding, cycling, canoeing, trekking
and golf. The number of countryside resorts (agriturismi) where you
can hire a horse or a bicycle increases season after season. And
when you've had too much open air activity, you are in the region of
Tuscany with the highest concentration of thermal springs. You can
recharge your batteries in the same way as the Etruscans, the Roman
soldiers and men such as Lorenzo the Magnificent. And we can tell
you where
Migliarino-San Rossore-Massaciuccoli Regional Park
Close to Versilia and the world's most famous tower (in Pisa), a
mosaic of miraculously integral natural environments, protected by
the park.
The beach is among the most solitary of the Tuscan coast and abounds
in low dunes and pioneer plants. Inland, green pine forests planted
from the eighteenth century onward, fragrant expanses of
Mediterranean underbrush and strips of mixed woods that host a rare
vine, the periploca, deer and wild boar.
As for wetlands, Lake Massaciuccoli hosts an important avifauna and
precious peat-bogs that extend among the cane-brakes .
