activities and attractions in Syracuse Sicily

The island of Ortigia is a wonderful place to passaggiare (take a walk) and much of its charm lies in the narrow medieval lanes, and the medieval palaces and churches. A walk around the perimeter of the island is simply a breath-taking experience.

Siracusa's Piazza Duomo is one of the cities most spectacular sights.  It was once the Greek Temple of Athena, built around 480 BC, and the massive Doric columns of the temple are still used to support the ancient cathedral.

Occupying a central position on the island of Ortigia, the Fonte Aretusa is a freshwater fontana (spring) which dates back to the earliest Greek colonists.
The Temple of Apollo, an ancient Greek temple, is also located on the island, which was built around 600 BC.

The are many options for day trips around Siracusa.  An excellent idea would be a day trip to the beautiful, medieval, Baroque town of Noto, which is less than an hour away by bus. Two bus  companies are readily avalaible, AST and Interbus, minutes walk from the condo in Siracusa.

Historical Attractions:
-The Greek Theater, the largest theater in Sicily, was built in the 6th century BC
-The Roman Amphitheater, one of the largest arenas of its kind, dates from the 3rd century AD.
-The Altar of Hieron II, the largest altar in Magna Grecia, was built around 225 BC
-Orecchio di Dioniso, (Ear of Dionysus) is part of the huge stone quarry that provided the stone for the building of the city.  It is told that they used this carved chamber in order to hold prisoners and were able to listen to them while held hostage.
-The Castle of Eurialo was an important Greek military castle overlooking the sea, built in the 4th century BC.

Horse drawn carriage tours of ancient Ortigia.
Marina with yachts from every country.

Ornate balconies overhead, aroma filled trattorias, and fabulous shopping.

Grotto boat tours available.
