vacation rental description

When you stay at our lakefront cottage located on a rural dead end road, you will return to a quieter time of tranquility, privacy, and peace. It is a place you can rock on the deck or the lawns and gaze at the lake's neverending beauty,
hear the loons, and enjoy the sunset over the lake's islands and the
Adirondacks beyond. Or you can swim in the crystal clear water or
just sit on the beach. If you want to be more active you can fish
off the shore or from the canoe or kayak which come with
the cottage. Or you can hike up the trails on Eagle Mountain and
view the incredible beauty all around. Or just go for a long walk or
bike or ride on the miles of quiet dirt roads that you must cross to
get to the camp.
The cottage is located on Cold Spring Road, in Milton at the base of
Eagle Mountain which is the highest point immediately adjacent to
Lake Champlain. Most of Eagle Mountian and the surrounding lakeshore
is preserved by the Lake Champlain Land Trust. The cottage is on the
eastern shore of the lake halfway between Burlington and St Albans
and overlooking the Lake Champlain Islands.
We also rent a home two doors away if you are looking for something
larger or wish to combine two homes for a family or shared vacation
with friends. See Burlington Vermont Vacation Rentals Listing #32319

cottage rental amenities

Maximum Occupancy 6 with no more than 4 adults.
The two bedroom cabin was fully renovated in late 2005 and
early 2006 and has been freshly painted inside with warm cozy colors
and decorated with comfortable and inviting furnishings. It is full
of light and fresh air.
The large living room, which now incorporates the old porch, has a
wall of windows looking out over the lake just feet away.
The kitchen is fully updated with full size gas stove, refrigerator,
microwave, toaster oven, coffee maker and all the necessary cookware,
dishes and utensils. There is a gas grill and picnic table outside.
There are two private and separated bedrooms, including the master
bedroom with sliding glass doors leading onto the outside deck. The
master bedroom has a double size bed and the second bedroom also has
a double bed. There is also a futon couch in the living room. So it
is the perfect size is for a couple with a few children or two
couples. It is really too small for more than 4 adults.
Finally there is the front deck off the living room and master
bedroom overlooking the Lake, some small and large islands and the
Adirondacks beyond.

activities and attractions in Burlington Vermont

The most recommended activity is to do nothing. Or almost nothing.
Relax. Wind down. Nap. Read. Do a jigsaw puzzle. Watch the sunset.
Putter around.
There is a TV/DVD combo if you do need some electronic
entertainment but there is no TV reception or only a dial up
internet connection.
If you want to be more active. Walk the long, long private road or
miles of connected dirt roads. Hike the trail from the property up
Eagle Mountian and enjoy sweeping views of the lake, islands and
mountians. Swim. Fish. Bike. Go for a boat ride. Build a fire on
the beach and roast marshmallows.
But if you want to leave the camp and the Lake (and you may not) --
It is 20 miles and 30 minutes to Downtown Burlington
It's about the same to the charming town of St Albans
In 45 minutes you could visit the world renowned Shelburne Museum
and Shelburne Farms or the nearby Teddy Bear Factory.
In less than an hour you can be at the Ben and Jerry's factory or
travel 15 minutes more and be in Stowe.
In an hour you could participate in the Summer activities at
Smuggler's Notch.
Or in 90 minutes you could be in downtown Montreal.
There's lots to do if you wish to leave the camp but you may not
want to.
There is no dock or place to launch a boat except a canoe or kayak.

Know what you are getting into with this place

Review submitted: August 10, 2010   Date of arrival: July 17, 2010

The description on the web site does not accurately represent many aspects of this property, including just how rustic the cottage is. First, the "beach" that is referenced several times is actually a very narrow strip of rocks with high cliffs behind it. In the cottage itself, we saw bugs everywhere, including spiders in the living room, bathroom, and even on the mattresses, and ants crawling through the living room and kitchen. The description of a "huge" living room is false; there is nothing "huge" with respect to this cottage. The beds are so small that my husband (who is 6-feet tall) could not fit in them; his feet literally hung out over the edge. Two adults cannot comfortably sleep in these beds. The shower is so small that an average-sized person can just barely fit in it. The toilet literally sinks down into the floor when you sit on it; I was afraid each time that it was going to burst through the floor. The mattresses are old, thin, and extremely uncomfortable. The TV/DVD player did not work.

We spent one sleepless night there and then after another several hours of no sleep the next night, we decided to spend the rest of the week in a hotel. It rained that night and when we came back the next day to get our stuff, the sheets and pillows were all damp, despite the fact that we had closed the windows. Another word of caution: the property is way out there, so be prepared to drive a long distance to get anywhere. And there is no AC, so it gets HOT.

All of that being said, the view is breathtaking. If you like camping in a tent, you will probably like this place. But if you like to have basic amenities and comforts, this place is not for you.

Owners response: We are sorry that these guests did not have good experience at our vacation cottage. Unfortunately they did not make these complaints at time of their stay. We live nearby and would have been glad to come visit and review any complaints the guests had but were not given the chance. Moreover, this review is not reflective of the reviews which have been hand written in our "vacation journal" which we keep at the cottage and in which comments are made by our guests. We have rented this cottage for 5 years and have had over 50 guest rentals and this is the only "bad" review.

In regard to what to expect--the photos and description are accurate.

From the complaints about the size of beds, shower, toilet and living room, we can only surmise that the complaining guests must have pretty large. The beds are described in the listing--two standard double beds with standard mattresses and one queen futon. The shower is small but can accomodate normal sized adults (including the 6.0', 275 lb owner). The toilet does not sink under the weight of an average or even fairly large person. The living room is 16' x 16' which is pretty big for a cottage.

The cottage is professionally cleaned between guests each week. The cottage is rural and surrounded by trees so we have no doubt there are occasional spiders and bugs, but not as described in the review. The cottage is not air conditioned but is not advertised as being air conditioned. No other guest reported to us that the DVD player was not working before or after these guests stayed. We note in our listing that there is no TV reception. No other guest has ever complainted of roof leaks or dampness.

As described in the listing, the cottage is in a rural area and is 20 miles and 30 minutes to Burlington.

We believe that these guests just did not really look at the pictures or read the detailed listing.

This is beautiful classic lakeside cottage in a rural area with stunning views. It is not like camping but is also not like staying in a Holiday Inn. We would glad to copy the pages from our "vacation journal" and share the great comments we have received from the many families who have found our cottage a wonderful and special place.

We regret that this one posted comment is the only review you are seeing.
