Disappointment, Dirt and Dampness

The charming home has many features to recommend it as a vacation rental. The decks and outside have been painted and except for the foilage that prevents a smooth entry to the front door appears charming. The pool is lovely and except for the planters on the deck that contain nothing but weeds the pool deck is comfortable. Arriving at the front door you are met by an old, shredded door mat. Should have been the first clue.Upon entering the home you notice that it has some charming items that momentarily distract you. Then as you try to put your items in the pantry and are met by mounds of mice dirt, open the kitchen draws to coffee grounds having been spilled and dried, utensils that must be washed because of the sticky beverage that has dried on them, blood drippings (that you hope is from a roast beef)down the front and into the cabinets that house the pots and pans you wonder about the condition of the rest of the home. Entering the basement, 5th bedroom, you realize that no one can sleep in it because of the musty smell and dampness. Two dehumidifiers are there, both are not running and filled with water. Upon calling to complain we are told that no one has ever complained before, The owner comes and views the mouse droppings and is perplexed as a family just vacated that morning and the house was cleaned. He cleaned up the mouse droppings and told us someone would return tomorrow, Sat., as no one was available as it was Friday night? Either the owners do not care about the work that they are supposedly paying the cleaning crew or they are accustomed to living in dirt. We had small children with us that we could not let play on the floor because of the mouse droppings that were found in the basket that contained children's toys. After cleaning out kitchen cabinet drawers and more mouse dirt from the closets we felt we were due a partial refund because our contract did not say that we were responsible for cleaning the home before we moved in....not my idea of a wonderful start of a vacay.
