This is the luxury, pet friendly vacation rental you have been dreaming of!
Only a fifteen minute ferry ride from historic Portland brings you to
this charming home located on quaint Peaks Island, Maine. Perched
atop an acre of rolling lawn, overlooking the picturesque waters of
Casco Bay, sits this Classic 1860's Greek Revival home which was
featured in the 1999 Holiday issue of Traditional Home Magazine.
There is much to do here. Enjoy bicycling the backshore...the island
is five miles around. Or go on kayaking excursions or sailing into
the sunset on a 72' schooner or island hopping on America's oldest
ferry service. Other favorites include picnicing on the rocks
overlooking neighboring islands.
Or go to town for the day. The Island Romance ferry takes you right
to the Old Port in Portland for shopping, or a visit to the state's
oldest and finest art museum. Since 1882, the Portland Museum of Art
has housed a collection of American and world-renown impressionist
masters. While in town have lunch at one of the fine bistros or world
class restaurants and then stroll the old narrow cobblestone streets
for treasures in the many boutiques. If major outlet shopping is
calling you, then head to Freeport where you'll find L.L. Bean and
lots of other brand name outlet shops.
But, maybe the most enjoyable time is to just do nothing but relax
with a good book while swinging on the hammock and listening to the
seaside sounds or watching the local lobstermen haul in your dinner
while the seagulls keep close watch overhead.
At day's end, savor the incredible sunset, the soft salty breeze, and
the best of summertime from your deck under the old apple tree.
Come for a week, or a month, and delight in having your own
enchanting island home. At Whitegate, you will experience the best of
island living, a place where the birds sing, the seagulls soar and
the salt air brings to life the romance and tranquility of life by
the sea.

The original home was built in 1865 by Henry Parsons and is one of
the earliest homesteads on Peaks Island. The owner, a Boston based
interior designer, lovingly restored the home with furnishings and
antiques in the English Country style.
With all its charm, the house was chosen by Traditional Home magazine
and featured in the 1999 Holiday issue under the caption…Island
Romance.
The Antique House:

antiques, art and history. Come savor the captivating views
overlooking an acre of rolling lawn, sailboats, and daily ferries
gliding across Casco Bay.
There are two English style bedrooms and each one has an antique
double poster bed topped by down duvet covers. Also, there are two
bathrooms, a sitting room with faux painted Neoclassic sky with
nesting birds, a cozy library to curl up with a good book, a dining

activities and attractions in Peaks Island Maine
On Peaks Island there is much to do, and if you choose, nothing to do
at all but relax with a good book or lay on the hammock and listen to
the seaside sounds. The island is five miles around and is a lovely
walk or bicycle ride. You will find the island has two distinct
sides; Harborside faces Casco Bay and features several small sandy
beaches and the rocky Oceanside faces the open sea.
Scrambling over the rocky Maine coastline is always fun, and for more
adventure, there is the Maine Island Kayak Co. for half day and full
day instructions and excursions. For those who love sailboats there
are daily trips on the Bagheera a classic Alden designed 72'
schooner. There are morning, afternoon and sunset cruises.
And don't forget island hopping, Casco Bay Ferry excursions run
daily. As the oldest ferry service in America, it makes its regular
daily runs through some of Maine's most beautiful natural scenery.
There are scenic cruises and music cruises, from the Mailboat Run to
the Sunset Run all taking you to the wonders of coastal Maine you
just can't get to by car.
And, after all that adventure, you'll want to head Downfront to the
ice cream and souvenir shop for a big cone of Moosetracks. Depending
on your taste, there are several small restaurants on the island for
dining, and there is always Hannigan's IGA Market for a great pizza
to go.
Of course don't forget the day trips to Portland's Old Port where
shops and restaurants abound. Many of the restaurants have received
national acclaim. Also, the Public Market has everything to eat from
lobsters to buffalo burgers. And, the Portland Museum of Art has some
of the best examples of Wyeth and Winslow Homer. Only a twenty minute
car ride north brings you to Freeport, home of L.L. Bean and many
other great names in outlet shopping.
