Not Everything We Expected

rasenne (New York)
Review submitted: May 10, 2013   Date of arrival: November 22, 2012

Unfortunately, the house was not everything we expected. It was dusty- especially under couches and furniture. We kept our one year old out of the living room to prevent her from getting under the couches. We ordered the linen service, which did not arrive until after 9PM on the day of our arrival. With a young child, this made the evening difficult being that we didn't have towels and sheets until late. In addition, there were water issues, and we had no hot water and could not shower until the day after we arrived. The downstairs shower did not work at all during our stay, so all 5 of the guests shard one bathroom for the duration of the weekend. A number of the lamps in the house did not work and we had to take some lamps from other rooms and place them in the living room in order to have light there.

The worst part was that we were charged $112.50 in damages including: "One nautical decorator item from the upstairs living room was, missing/broken"..."A broken flashlight"... "A white stain on the downstairs dresser"..... "Tongs for the grill missing".
We e-mailed questioning these costs and received no response.

We did not damage or steal anything during our stay, and do not know what "nautical item" was addressed. We did not see or need a flashlight, and wouldn't know where to find one if we had. We did not eat or drink downstairs, and since the shower didn't work, used no liquids, so a "white stain on the dresser" could not have come from us simply sleeping in the room. It was below freezing and snowed while we were there. We did not uncover the grill, let alone, use the tongs.

Buyer Beware!

Pictures are 100 years old!

Place had an odor of mold, the downstairs was almost impossible to breathe. There was dirt everywhere including mouse droppings and chewed oven mitts. Kitchen not stocked very well plus cupboard by sink has two nails hanging thru upper cupboard. I cut my hand there, ouch.

The photos make it look very nice but it is really a dump.
Would not ever recommend this place.

Owners response: It is always a challenge to maintain a rental home that sits vacant for weeks at a time. The Pictures on the website were taken about 6 months ago and really truly represent the home well. When this renter arrived he called me and had a water pressure problem and also mentioned that he didn't think the home was clean. I immediately called for repairs and had the owner of the cleaning service go to the home to address any issues they had. She repaired the water issue and inspected the home and found nothing of consequence. I expressed to the renter when he called that I would send the cleaners out to address his issues and when she got there he had no complaints. The nails on the cabinet were from a broken paper towel holder that my handyman was supposed to replace and has since been replaced with a new one. The cleaner found no mouse dropping upon her inspection and I was there myself the following weekend. Upon inspection I found the "Chewed Mitt" in question and determined that it was not "chewed on" but frayed and burnt. I disposed of it and replaced all mitts towels etc. Just to be sure We then had the place exterminated as I know how my wife would react if she saw mouse evidence. We strive to maintain a clean and decent rental property. As you can see we have no other negative reviews. We respond to any and all suggestions/complaints in a timely fashion. This renter was there over the Christmas Holiday and we had renters in for New Years and recieved no complaints at all. As a matter of Fact I recieved This email from him "Hi Fred,
First off I just want to complement you on a beautiful house. My group really enjoyed spending NYE in the Poconos and your house provided us with a great NYE" I guess different people have different expectations but you can see what someone else said and not just me.

Great getaway - pretty lake view

JustJames (Burlington Twp, NJ)
Review submitted: July 11, 2012   Date of arrival: June 22, 2012

This house was perfect for our family's vacation this year. We got there on Friday and stayed for the week. It was at the end of the block so traffic was not a problem. We walked from the back of the house, down the pathway, to the beach, which was convenient. My kids (10 and 14) loved playing in the sand and since it was so close, I didn't mind letting them go down by themselves as there is an active lifeguard on duty during the day. I could just look out the back window and see them playing so I felt comfortable relaxing at the house while they were off burning up their energy.

The beds were comfortable and the appliances were in good working condition. We mostly used paper plates so my wife didn't have to do much clean-up but the dishes and silverware that were provided were nice too. If I had wanted to do a sit down dinner, it would not have been a problem at all. Since there was a gas grill at the house, we mostly cooked out and enjoyed our meals in the backyard. Surprisingly, for all the trees that surround this house, there weren't that many bugs. We did use a citronella candle and Off while we were outside though, just to be safe.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay and we would come back again. The price was reasonable for what you get. The people are nice, the owners were attentive and easy to get in touch with and answered all our questions quickly. I recommend this place for families and plan to return next year with mine.

Recommended for: age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, pet-friendly, sight seeing, romantic getaway
