Great Mountain House

Review submitted: November 22, 2013   Date of arrival: September 10, 2013

Over the years we have stayed a variety of homes in the Poconos close to Big Boulder and this was by far our favorite. The homeowner is jovial and got right back to us with all our questions, and we had a lot. Priced perfect for our group.
Location couldn't be more ideal. Lots of laughs on the deck while admiring the lake out back. Enjoyed roasting marshmallows with the kids at the firepit and starry nights in the hot tub!

The house was neat, clean, and roomy! The kids enjoyed the gameroom while the adults spread out upstairs and played cards...this was our most relaxing visit to the Poconos yet! Definitely will be coming again next year! Thanks for having us.

Recommended for: adventure seekers, families with young children, families with teenagers, girls getaway, pet-friendly, sight seeing, tourists without a car, romantic getaway

Owners response: Thank you. We ar so glad you enjoyed your vacation in our home. One of the most important things in life is memories we make and we are glad to help you and your Family make lifetime memories.

Not Everything We Expected

Review submitted: May 10, 2013   Date of arrival: November 22, 2012

Unfortunately, the house was not everything we expected. It was dusty- especially under couches and furniture. We kept our one year old out of the living room to prevent her from getting under the couches. We ordered the linen service, which did not arrive until after 9PM on the day of our arrival. With a young child, this made the evening difficult being that we didn't have towels and sheets until late. In addition, there were water issues, and we had no hot water and could not shower until the day after we arrived. The downstairs shower did not work at all during our stay, so all 5 of the guests shard one bathroom for the duration of the weekend. A number of the lamps in the house did not work and we had to take some lamps from other rooms and place them in the living room in order to have light there.

The worst part was that we were charged $112.50 in damages including: "One nautical decorator item from the upstairs living room was, missing/broken"..."A broken flashlight"... "A white stain on the downstairs dresser"..... "Tongs for the grill missing".
We e-mailed questioning these costs and received no response.

We did not damage or steal anything during our stay, and do not know what "nautical item" was addressed. We did not see or need a flashlight, and wouldn't know where to find one if we had. We did not eat or drink downstairs, and since the shower didn't work, used no liquids, so a "white stain on the dresser" could not have come from us simply sleeping in the room. It was below freezing and snowed while we were there. We did not uncover the grill, let alone, use the tongs.

Buyer Beware!

Owners response: We have a cleaning service which cleans our home between every use. I was in the home immediately following the tenant and I did not find excessive dust at all. Just to make sure we had the cleaners move and clean under everything. The water issue was a valve that had been shut off by someone. The only thing I could think of is the tenant accidentally shut it off trying to turn the water on when they arrived. All the lamps in the home operate off of wall switches so therefore the lamps do not have an individual switch. If they had simply turned on the wall switch the lamp would come on. The cleaning service does a complete and thorough inventory between every rental. I can only go by what the inventory is and when things are missing we must charge for them. As you can see by our pictures our home is nicely decorated and those things cost alot of $$. When my agent went to the home on Saturday am to repair the water the tenant stated to him that he had no other issues. We did respond to their email and after this all the other issues were brought up.
We as home owners have no way of knowing who rents our homes and how they are going to take care of it. We work very hard to have a nice home for vactioneers to enjoy
The linen service is supplied by a third party and we have no control over them.
We do respond to our guest needs and issues always As soon as possible. My ESP didn't work well enough to know the tenant had a downstairs shower problem until I got this review. We have had no other complaints concerning this issue

Pictures are 100 years old!

Review submitted: February 1, 2013   Date of arrival: December 23, 2012

Place had an odor of mold, the downstairs was almost impossible to breathe. There was dirt everywhere including mouse droppings and chewed oven mitts. Kitchen not stocked very well plus cupboard by sink has two nails hanging thru upper cupboard. I cut my hand there, ouch.

The photos make it look very nice but it is really a dump.
Would not ever recommend this place.

Owners response: It is always a challenge to maintain a rental home that sits vacant for weeks at a time. The Pictures on the website were taken about 6 months ago and really truly represent the home well. When this renter arrived he called me and had a water pressure problem and also mentioned that he didn't think the home was clean. I immediately called for repairs and had the owner of the cleaning service go to the home to address any issues they had. She repaired the water issue and inspected the home and found nothing of consequence. I expressed to the renter when he called that I would send the cleaners out to address his issues and when she got there he had no complaints. The nails on the cabinet were from a broken paper towel holder that my handyman was supposed to replace and has since been replaced with a new one. The cleaner found no mouse dropping upon her inspection and I was there myself the following weekend. Upon inspection I found the "Chewed Mitt" in question and determined that it was not "chewed on" but frayed and burnt. I disposed of it and replaced all mitts towels etc. Just to be sure We then had the place exterminated as I know how my wife would react if she saw mouse evidence. We strive to maintain a clean and decent rental property. As you can see we have no other negative reviews. We respond to any and all suggestions/complaints in a timely fashion. This renter was there over the Christmas Holiday and we had renters in for New Years and recieved no complaints at all. As a matter of Fact I recieved This email from him "Hi Fred,
First off I just want to complement you on a beautiful house. My group really enjoyed spending NYE in the Poconos and your house provided us with a great NYE" I guess different people have different expectations but you can see what someone else said and not just me.
