activities and attractions in Lubec Maine

Lubec has bold coastal cliffs, coastal rain forest, wildflower
meadows, and several sandy beaches (rare this far Down East). The
region is host to three state parks, a national wildlife refuge, and
several nature preserves, all of which offer well maintained hiking
trails. Lubec claims the easternmost point of land in the U.S. and is
home to the West Quoddy Head Lighthouse, one of the most
photographed lighthouses in the country. In fact, you can see and
visit 4 lighthouses within a 10 mile radius of Lubec. Local whale,
wildlife, and puffin tours offer the chance to observe nature up
close. Nearby kayak and canoe rental facilities and the many public
boat ramps in the area also offer a chance to explore and observe.
The area is rich in history -- from the first naval battle of the
Revolutionary to Maine's own "Cannery Row" which lined the
waterfronts of the Downeast coast. You'll find it all here -- rich
history, spectacular scenery, abundant wildlife, and friendly people.

A Jem of a Hidaway

John E. ()
Review submitted: August 15, 2012   Date of arrival: July 29, 2012

I just spent two wonderful weeks in Northern Maine with Periwinkle as a most ideal home base. This was a great little cottage with everything I needed including cable so I could watch the Olympics. I felt I had all the privacy I needed as well . There was nothing it lacked even a phone. Forget your cell phone. There is no tower in the area. In fact I had no reception north of Portland. I gave people the number at the cottage and they called me at a prearranged time. Periwinkle is well located. Just a few minutes from 189 and Lubec center. Two hours from Bar Harbor, and easy access to Canada (be sure to have your passport!) St. Andrews and Campabelo are a must and be sure to check out Bonnie's art Gallery and concert hall. All in all I would come back here in a minute. One happy camper.

Lovely Place to Stay

Review submitted: September 13, 2011   Date of arrival: August 28, 2011

My girlfriend and I stayed in the Periwinkle Cottage for a week around Labor Day, and had a wonderful time. The cottage was cozy and clean, located on a quiet road not far from downtown Lubec. The large deck was a real plus -- great for sitting out in the sun and listening to the sound of the birds. While not "secluded," we felt we had all the privacy we needed, with neighboring houses visible, but far enough away that we felt neither intrusive nor intruded upon. The kitchen and bathroom were perfectly adequate (good water pressure), and TV/DVD player a nice plus. We found ourselves charmed very much by the area -- not just downtown Lubec, which has good eats (Kippy's, Frank's, etc.), a couple of watering holes (including Annabelle's; recommended!), and an awesome view of the bay with Campabello Island across the bridge, but the surrounding countryside as well. There are dozens of places to hike along the coast and inland, wildlife viewing opportunities galore, and, of course, a lot of very fresh fish to set into. We would definitely go back to Lubec, and happily stay again at the Periwinkle Cottage.

Affordable - Cozy - Charming and welcoming

Review submitted: July 19, 2011   Date of arrival: July 3, 2011

We stayed at the Periwinkle cottage during the week of July 4th. The cottage is well located and very inviting. It is at the heart of everything the town has to offer in terms of beauty. Frankly we never experienced anything like this before. Lubec is a beautiful small town very inspiring and welcoming by his residents. It is a true paradise. Words cannot describe what we experienced during our stay so you owe it to yourself to experience the breath of this rejuvenating freshness of this quaint location where pollution, smog, traffic are unknown by these fortunate residents. I would recommend this cottage to anyone really in search of a quiet place to enjoy the beauty of nature.

Recommended for: age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway, sight seeing, romantic getaway
