Great historic cottage

Matt (Phoenix, AZ)
Review submitted: August 25, 2011   Date of arrival: August 13, 2011

It is an historic cottage and we loved this place. The photos are a good representation of the property and the location is great. It is walking distance from plenty of markets and restaurants. The parking is a bit tight for a large vehicle but we have a Ford Expedition and we didn't have any problems getting in and out. I'd recommend the property and hope to come back next year.

Recommended for: families with young children, families with teenagers, sight seeing, romantic getaway

Old and dated, I would not stay here again

twinmomma (Alberta, Canada)
Review submitted: June 10, 2011   Date of arrival: May 19, 2011

Everything about this house is old. I would guess the house itself is from the 40’s it has old windows that you can hear everything through. The linens are old and wearing as well as some of the towels are old. We only got 6 towels for 6 people for 10 days and found that to be skimpy. However it was all clean. The doors and the hardware all appear to be original. Given the many coats of paint on the doors they stick and can be hard to open. Especially for kids or older people with arthritis.

The TV in the bedroom is very old and only works periodically. The TV in the main room is new and has all cable channels you could want. The washer and dryer are old but work fine. However there is no laundry basket or anything to transfer your clothes from the washer in the garage to the dryer at the back door. We picked up an extra box at Costco and that worked, but a laundry basket would have been nice.

The shower in here is super small if you are a large person you would not be able to turn around. We tried to use the tub but it leaked. We mentioned this to the owner. The sink is dripping however apparently that is supposed to be getting fixed. The mirror above the sink is small, very old and blackened. There is a mirror over the toilet.

We struggled with using the Fouton and it wouldn’t stay in place when you made it into a bed, and we do know how to use it.

There are some things in the kitchen that are new but again most things are old. If you are planning on doing most of your cooking the knives are old and dull, and there is just enough cutlery for 6 people. However if you are eating out most of the time this isn’t an issue. We didn’t find a dish cloth only one sponge, and one tea towel for wiping up.

The location of this house is excellent. It’s steps from the beach and in a very trendy, fun area. However the parking is very tight if you have a large vehicle like a minivan.

I feel like the pictures made this place seem much newer and better kept than it was. It was old and dull. All things considered I probably would have paid a little more for a newer place with some better amenities, and would not recommend this place to my friends, or to people with children.

Owners response: I'm sorry that this historic cottage was not to your liking. We have intentionally preserved as much as we could as a sharp contrast to the newer, all-the-same construction in the area. As a result, this is the first negative review we have had. Architectural preservation is very important to us, including the original wood-frame windows instead of cheap vinyl that wouldn't look right. Many people, especially our guests, prefer the feel and ambience of a slice of Mission Beach history. To address the more specific issues mentioned here, the tv in the bedroom has been replaced with a new flat screen and has full cable. We generally supply 8 bath towels for our guests, and there is a washer/dryer to do laundry. (the guest's initial inquiry about the house listed 5 occupants - 2 adults and 3 children, so that is what we based everything on)The shower is standard size from Home Depot, and the antique claw-foot tub will only leak if it is filled past the overflow valve. The futon is less than a year old and works fine. We replace linens and towels every two years, if not sooner. The stove and refrigerator are less than two years old as are most of the kitchen appliances (coffeemaker, toaster, etc), . There are many knives, forks, spoons, etc. They disappear from time to time, but we always replace them. I have just sharpened all of the knives (thanks for letting me know). There are also over 300 books lining the book shelves for guests to read. Paper towels are supplied for wiping up. There are 2 parking spaces, one in the garage, the other next to the garage which is large enough for most any vehicle. A minivan fits there easily. Thank you for your comments - guest feedback is important to my wife and I.

Perfect except one thing

Dave (Phoenix)
Review submitted: April 12, 2011   Date of arrival: July 17, 2010

This would have been a perfect rental if the neighbors to the East didn't rock out till 4 am and act like drunken hooligans 3 of the 7 nights we were there. It was horrible.

Owners response: I wish you had called me, David. I would have had a serious conversation with them. This is the first complaint I have heard about noisy neighbors. I hope you can return in the future.
