Vacation Rental Description

History, charm, location, and view converge to make “Amy’s  
Cottage” a delightful retreat to enjoy Stonington’s picturesque  
seaside town.  Formerly home to local historian Clayton Gross, the  
home itself shares a unique piece of American Architectural  
history.  In the late 1800s and early 1900s, a national population  
increase created a large demand for housing.  Stonington, too, was  
growing quickly.  Its flourishing granite industry swelled this  
small seaside town into a bustling community that provided granite  
to such notable structures as the Rockefeller Center, Smithsonian  
Institute, and George Washington Bridge, to name just a few.  It was  
during this time that a national trend developed of buying kit  
houses.  “Kit Homes” would be ordered by catalogue, arrive at the  
nearest train depot, and then delivered by horse-drawn cart, ship,  
or truck.  During the period of 1900 to 1939 Sears Roebuck & Company  
sold approximately 50,000 kit homes nationally, with “Amy’s Cottage”  
being one of these treasured homes--the Sears 1905 Fullerton model.   
Many of these homes are now listed on the Historic Registry of Homes. 
 
Sears kit homes were well built and comprised such unique features  
as built-in ironing boards, china cabinets, room dividing  
colonnades, Hoosier cabinets, telephone niches, high quality wood  
flooring and trim, and detailed lighting and hardware. Amy’s Cottage  
is no exception.  The current owner is a professional decorative  
painter and has further heightened the home’s warmth and charm with  
faux, antique and hand painted finishes around the home.  A nice  
array of local collectible, antiques, charming decor and original  
art enhance the home's appeal.  Retaining the features of the  
earlier days, the large, eat-in kitchen still contains the old gas  
stove, metal sink, original cabinets and built-ins.  An adjacent  
living room with French doors opens to the foyer, with its elegant  
stairwell leading to the second story.  Upstairs three enchanting  
bedrooms - two bedrooms with queen sized beds, and the third bedroom  
with twin bed and twin sized futon, provide complete comfort. 
 
Situated at the foothill to “Stonington Mountain”, Amy’s Cottage  
begins the gradual descent of homes which cascade down to Stonington  
Harbor.  Gazing southward, a small church with its prominent steeple  
guides the eye onward to the beautiful ocean vista beyond.  The  
ocean views and glimpses are enjoyed from several vantage points  
throughout the home, with the best views upstairs, or out on the  
enclosed front porch or deck along the side of the home.  Call or

what the former owner, local historian Clayton Gross, sought to  
preserve in his writings, including Island Chronicles:  Accounts of  
Days Past in Deer Isle and Stonington (1977) and Steel over  
Eggemoggin: A History of the Deer Isle-Sedgwick Bridge (1989).   
Enjoy samples of his work displayed in the home, or the multitude of  
other books left for guests’ enjoyment.
