If you want to experience life as it should be, to experience the
brilliant colors of the sky at dawn, the trickling sounds of the
lake lapping the shore, or the wonder of the sun rising out of a
crystal clear lake, you will feel right at home at the Call of the
Loon Cabin at Thompson Lake.
The Call of the Loon cabin is located in the Lakes Region of Maine.
Tucked between the Atlantic Ocean and the White Mountains, the Lakes
Region of Maine earns its name from the more than 50 lakes scattered
among green rolling hills. There are a multitude of activities to
enjoy during the fall, winter, spring, and summer.
Maine is a popular destination in the Fall. Leaf peepers flock to
the area to get a first hand glimpse of the dramatic color
transformation of the fall foliage from green to the brilliant
colors of reds to orange to yellow. Foliage normally starts to
change in mid to late September. It lasts well into October and
typically peaks about October 10th. At this time of year
vacationers can enjoy views of the foliage from just about
anywhere. The vibrant landscape can be particularly enjoyable to
look at while taking a scenic hike, riding a mountain bike,
exploring the lake by boat, casting for fish, antiquing, apple
picking, attending fall festivals, hunting, or just sitting on the
deck gazing at the water.
Winter is a particularly fun season in the lakes region of Maine for
outdoor enthusiasts. The lakes become the playground of
snowmobilers, fishermen, skiers, ATV enthusiasts and lots of others.
The Lakes and ponds freeze over and by January are safe for all
kinds of activity. Snowmobiles can be seen zipping around. Snow
shoers forge a trail along the shore and across the lakes. Cross-
country skiers find them a perfect arena for exercise. Skaters make
use of the surface for fun. Fishing is also found in abundance. The
ice fishing season opens January first and avid fisherman have their
small shacks out for warming and cooking while they tend their
traps.
Skiing is also a popular winter attraction. Shawnee Peak Ski
Resort, Mount Abram ski Resort, and Sunday River Ski Resort are all
nearby and all offer fantastic downhill skiing opportunities. Cross
country skiing can be enjoyed in the woods right outside of the
cabin or if you prefer groomed trails from Carters X-Country Ski
Center or Sunday River Ski Resort.
From the first hint of Spring through the end of summer activity on
Thompson Lake truly comes alive. This is considered peak season in
the lakes region of Maine. Sights commonly seen on Thompson lake
include groups of sailboats crisscrossing the lake captained by
children learning to sail at one of the two camps on the lake, boats
pulling a waterskier or someone out for a joy ride on a tube,
canoers and kayakers exploring the shore, vacationers basking in the
sun on docks or swim up floats, jetskiers skipping across the water,
fisherman trolling the water, loons diving under the water, pontoon
boats with groups of people enjoying a tour of the lake, and
swimmers diving off of docks.
If you are looking for that perfect romantic getaway or a vacation
that is sure to please every member of your family, visit Call of
the Loon cabin on Thompson Lake!

activities and attractions in Casco Maine
Things to do (other than relaxing, reading a good book, swimming,
napping in the hammock, enjoying the view, etc):
FISHING: The fishing on Thompson Lake is great. Thompson Lake is
4,426 acres according to the Maine Department of Environmental
Protection. It lies northeast of Sebago Lake with a maximum depth of
121 ft. It's about 12 miles long, and averages about 2 miles in
width. The lake is stocked with fish. You will find Large and Small
Mouth Bass, Lake Trout, Salmon, Pickrel, and many other species.
BOATING: Canoes and kayaks are available at the cabin. If you
choose to rent a motorized boat you can do so at the Thompson Lake
marina. Among other things, pontoon boats are available at the
marina for rent. This is a fun and relaxing way to see the entire
lake.
GOLFING: There are several golf courses in the area including Point
Sebago golf course which offers 18 championship caliber holes, with
a first class golf school and mesmerizing views. There are several
other golf courses in the area as well.
DOWN-HILL SKIING: Shawnee Peak Ski Resort, Mount Abram ski Resort,
and Sunday River Ski Resort are all nearby and all offer fantastic

CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING: Cross-country skiing can be enjoyed in the
woods surrounding the cabin or if you prefer groomed trails from
Carters X-Country Ski Center or Sunday River Ski Resort.
SNOWMOBILING: Snowmobile trails are accessible right from the

that is maintained by the local snowmobile club. The trail network
connects to the ITS (International Trail System) in Oxford, which is
a half hour ride away. The local trails are multi-purpose trails
for snowmobiles, hikers, and cross country skiers, so it is
recommended to keep at a safe speed. The riding is very scenic, with
very little traffic. There are many area lakes that interconnect
with the trails.
ICE FISHING: Ice fishing is a popular winter activity enjoyed by
many on Thompson Lake as well as the surrounding area lakes.

drive-ins.

and Portland offer great shopping and wonderful restaurants and lots
to do and see.
SONGO RIVER QUEEN: The Songo River Queen II is a replica of a
Mississippi stern wheeler paddleboat. Boat trips run daily in the
summer.
OTHER: There are lot of other things to do including antiquing,
hiking, biking, apple picking during the fall; enjoy fall foliage;
day trips to other towns of interest in Maine, horse back riding, go-
