Vacation Rental Description

Beach-front house in Sisal, Yucatan. Sisal is a typical fishing village, is a nice place to escape  
from the city and  relax. Located 55km from Merida, 1hr driving. 
 
The house has 1 bedroom, kitchen and living room with view to the beach, 1 bathroom. Located 9  
blocks from downtown, 15 min walking, on the west side of town. 
 
Beach in Sisal is wide, there are about 110yards of sandy beach  between the cottage and the sea. 
There is regular bus service between Sisal and Merida.  A few canadians have discovered Sisal and  
are staying over here  during winter. 
 
English is an exotic language here, so don´t expect anyone speak such language, be ready to practice  
your spanish or maya language. Sisal was the main port of Yucatan long time ago, it was attacked by   
pirates. Original canyons that were used  to protect town from those pirates are now decorating the  
main square. Sisal vegetal fiber was named that way because it was marked as "Sisal Customs", Sisal  
was the port of  exporting the fiber. 
 
Atmosphere in Sisal is the one of a fishing village, people are friendly and always in good mood, in  
spite that locals are low income they are always smiling. There is no crime in town.  
Sisal has its own life, people who live over here are happy to do so, more and more non locals are  
comming over to stay because its easy to feel comfortable and become part of the landscape. 
 
Main economic activity in town is fishing, there are several restaurants with good seafood. Sisal  
receives lots of tourists in summer time, particulary august and mainly from Merida. There are a  
couple of very old buildings, one is the former customs that was rebuilt recently, its been used as  
a handcrafts market in summer. An interesting building is the one where the lighthouse is, its a  
small fortress built to resist attacks from pirates, its the only  military arquitecture building in  
Yucatan state.

Activities and Attractions

What you can expect: 
Quiet place for relax and enjoy peace and tranquility, most of the time birds are the only sound you  
will hear. 
Good fresh seafood, being a fishing village its easy to get good food either for cook or already  
prepared for you. 
Sunshine, lots of it. 
Scuba diving, snorkeling. 
Contact with nature, Sisal is not a spoiled place, you can have close contact with untouched nature,  
flamingoes  
and other varieties of birds.   
 
What not to expect: 
Not crowds around, just a few locals from Merida on weekends.  
Not superstores in town, there are small stores in the village where you can do your grocery. 
No telephone yet, I applied for a line but It will take time to get it. 
Since Sisal is not known by tourists, there aren't structured activites, you do everything on your  
own. 
Breeze is fresh and temperature will be around 30C at noon, down to 18C early in the morning in  
winter,  
humidity is high most of the time.
