activities and attractions in Paso Robles Central Coast
Paso Robles:
Paso Robles was named for its local oak trees, El Paso de Robles: The
Pass of the Oaks.
Today, Paso Robles is home to more than 100 wineries and 26,000
vineyard acres focusing on premium wine production. The distinct
micro-climates and diverse soils, combined with warm days and cool
nights, make growing conditions ideal for producing more than 40 wine
varieties from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, to Syrah, Viognier and
Roussanne, to Zinfandel, the area?s heritage wine variety.
Hearst Castle:
Hearst Castle is one of the largest of approximately 5,000 historic
house museums in the U.S., with one of the most sophisticated guided
tour programs in the country. Once the home of William Randolph
Hearst, California State Parks strives to keep the estate looking
like a private residence. The tours take the visitor back into time
through the interpretation of a combination of many aspects regarding
the estate, including William Randolph Hearst and his family, and the
collection, architecture, gardens and lifestyle at the Castle. Formal
guide training is an integral aspect of Hearst Castle. Castle tour
guides are initially trained a total of 168 hours with additional in-
service training and ongoing independent study between tours,
resulting in a high quality interpretive experience for all who
visit "The Enchanted Hill."
Beaches for Miles and Miles:
One hundred miles of stunning coastline awaits the visitor to San
Luis Obispo County. From the dramatic shores of the northern coast
(Ragged Point, San Simeon, Cambria) to dramatice Morro rock (Morro
Bay, Cayucos) to the smooth diamond-white sands of the southern
beaches (Oceano, Grover Beach, Pismo Beach) there is something for
everyone.
Just 35 minutes west of Paso Robles is the beach town of Cambria on
the famous Pacific Coast Highway, US-1. Stretching both north and
south, nearly ten beaches along the coast offer something for
surfers, kayakers and sunbathers. You won't want to miss Avila Beach,
it is one of the most popular beaches because it is considered to be
the sunniest and warmest beach in the county.
