traveler reviews for this seneca lake house rental

We love this place!

Former Finger Laker (Stone Mountain, GA)
Review submitted: August 23, 2011   Date of arrival: August 7, 2011

We just returned from our second stay in this cottage--actually the third if you count the time we visited my cousins who have also rented here (on our recommendation). This property offers one of the nicest locations on this side of the lake--HUGE lot, great deck, nice big shore area with plenty of room for a big bonfire. During our stay my three cousins (this was a kind of family reunion) rented a larger, more modern cottage about six houses away from us, but they and all the rest of my family (at least 10 other people during the course of our stay) who still live right in the immediate area all congregated here--that was where we all felt the most comfortable. Although we left the area 30 years ago, I grew up on Seneca Lake (less than a mile from this cottage) and our visits here really make me nostalgic and take me back to a sweeter time--slower pace, a wonderful break from our "real" lives. The cottage is charmingly rustic and it is more than adequate--the living/dining area is really large, as is the bathroom. When we vacation on the lake, we don't need a big bedroom--we're there to enjoy the lake, the sunrises (they were spectacular this time!), and the outdoors in general. It is always spotlessly clean. The grape arbor by the door is so picturesque--it feels like you're entering a little European cottage. Also--a great touch--Ken leaves a welcome bottle of wine from the Billsboro Winery--a great place that you can walk to (which we did for their Thursday night "Pizza on the Patio"--GREAT fun). Even though we were return renters, we really appreciated Ken meeting us there in person on our arrival. We would definitely go back.

Honest Review

Renter (Milan,New York, USA)
Review submitted: July 20, 2011   Date of arrival: June 23, 2011

The owner was quite accomodating. Our stay was fairly okay. The deck and access to the Lake were fine. However, be aware that there is a reason why there are no photos of the kitchen and bedrooms.
The kitchen is strictly 1930-1940. The microwave, toaster, and coffeemaker were stored in a closet and had to be retrieved. The stove is iffy.
The bedrooms are quite small.
The sofas in the living room are quite uncomfortable and have a particular odor that we found quite offensive.
Forget the TV. Remote doesn't work on this (I believe) 19inch model.
However, the owner did promptly return our cleaning deposit.

One last item. The train! Tracks are adjacent to the property.
First night the train rumbled through at approximately 1 AM and the whole house shook.
The proximity to Geneva was excellent.

Owners response: 7/21/11 - We appreciate the review of our family cottage and take this guest’s comments to heart. We regret that this guest found the sofas in the living room to have objectionable odors. Upon inspection we did not notice any odors and in any case we have the slip covers laundered on a regular basis. As for some of the other comments, we would agree that the kitchen is vintage, but it does have a double sink, new faucets and spray attachment, adequate counter space, a table, a modern refrigerator and stove and all the kitchen utensils one could need. There is no dishwasher and we do store the brand new coffee maker and toaster in an adjacent utility room just off the kitchen. The bedrooms are small as stated in the advertising on our website. We actually resent the implication that we might be trying to hide something from our guests by not providing a picture. We also did not provide a picture of our bathroom which is spacious and features imported ceramic tub tile. Yes, the TV is small but the remote does work through the VCR and I would have been happy to help her sort this problem out. While our guest noticed the kitchen, it would have been nice to comment on the brand new kitchen floor installed this past May 2011. As for the train comments, I would have to say that in the three years we have been doing weekly rents, this is the first time that we heard this was a concern to our guests.
