and sight seeing,and much more.
Vero Beach is just 20 minutes south of Ft. Pierce, 60 minutes North

the of Miami, 2 hours South of Disney World and major Central Florida
attractions.
The county seat of St. Lucie County, Fort Pierce was named for Lt.
Col. Benjamin Kendrick Pierce, brother of Franklin Pierce, 14th US
president. Established as an Army fort during the Seminole Indian
War, Fort Pierce was constructed in 1837, although it wasn't until
1901 that the town was incorporated. Early residents looked to the
river for sustenance, and fishing was particularly prominent. Once
the Florida East Coast railroad pushed through at the end of the
19th century, connection to the rest of the state was easier, and
the area population increased. This trend continued after the World
Wars, and for a time, Fort Pierce even hosted a Navy base, which
drew even more inhabitants. Today, the quaint city is a quiet haven
from some of Florida's more developed destinations. It boasts a
beautifully restored downtown and a lovely marina. Notable
structures include Historic City Hall and the Seven-Gable House, a
circa-1910 home that now hosts the town's visitors' center. Other
local attractions include the St. Lucie County Historical Museum
(which charts the presence of local Indians, the wrecks of Spanish
ships, and early 20th-century life) and the UDT-Seal Museum, which
examines the Navy's elite teams and their rigorous training.
Offering a glimpse of local wildlife, the Manatee Education and
Observation Center enlightens visitors about sea cows that frequent
coastal waters, and Heathcote Botanical Gardens delights folks with
floral displays. Snorkeling and swimming draw their share of
adherents, and Friday Fest, a monthly street festival, appeals to
people near and far. The town also maintains a notable scientific
presence, thanks to several facilities for marine research,
including one run by the Smithsonian Institution.
