This is a quaint property, built on an old Spanish Land Grant,
part of a once-upon-a-time ranch built on a high desert some 900 ft
higher than Tucson. It is quite close to Tucson--yet it is still quite
secluded.
The owner built the pueblo himself using the materials brought to
the new world by the Spanish Conquistadores: Stucco, adobe, tile,
cement, plaster and the hand wrought support posts carved by the
Indians of Patzcuaro.
The White Dove of the Desert, the old San Xavier Mission
settlement founded by Father Kino when the Spanish first came to the
Southwest, is nearby on the Tohono O'odham reservation, which is only
ten minutes from the Hacienda.
Having spent much of his younger life in Mexico, the owner
patterned his construction on the Spanish plan of having living spaces
separate and private with access for each living space exiting onto a
portal or exterior garden.
The bathroom is decorated with the hand-painted Talavera tile
from Dolores Hidalgo Mexico and the floors all have the fabulous
Saltillo tile from the Mexican state of the same name.
Hand-carved support posts from Patzcuaro adorn various parts of
the hacienda and there is one Tarahumara post in the kitchen from the
Sierra Madre region of Mexico, carved by the Tarahumara Indians. The
hacienda is culturally correct for the Southwestern United States.
The rooms are furnished and decorated with antique Mexican art
and hand-made furniture, with a smattering of colonial pottery
pieces. The paintings on the wall are original oil and watercolor.
The property is literally a "Pueblo" of buildings which include
work shops, storage buildings, and parking ramadas.
Part of the original ten acres was purchased by an eclectic
couple from Rhode Island who converted the original hacienda into a
very lovely Bed & Breakfast (La Gatita B&B) which is currently
frequented by Birders from all over the country.
La Hacienda Quintita is located in an area which is sparsely
populated and is designated "horse property", an area which allows
the locals to stable their own horses and to ride them in the
surrounding desert. As one might guess, we are animal friendly.
Which means that if you have a pet dog or two, you are still welcome.
And should an untoward accident happen with the rugs or furniture, we
know that animal lovers are responsible people who will make it right.
There is abundant wildlife hereabouts, with deer frequently
grazing our land, javalina roam freely but usually only at night, and
coyotes can be expected to howl and yap on cold Winter nights. It
truly is a serene and tranquil place.
