Newland, features 800 square foot deck provides ample area for
relaxing and listening to the 900 feet of the White Oak Creek (14
feet) which wends it way throughout the property. Then head to the
western edge of the property and set your easy chair on our private
bridge over the creek and just relax! And shall we talk nature? This
cabin in nestled in a small plateau at the foot of a Christmas tree
farm, with native North Carolina forest everywhere! Plus, clean, crisp
mountain air during the day and more stars than you can imagine at
night. During the summer, you can't tell where the stars end and the
fireflies begin!

your arrival...

activities and attractions in Newland Blue Ridge Mountains

Just two miles from the front door of La Casa de Buck (across from an
Ingles Food Store, Roses Express and Dollar General) is a beautiful
day trip hiking trail with waterfalls and mountainside terrain -
delightful year round.
Like to ski? Near the towns of Banner Elk and Boone, four areas offer
skiers ample opportunity for winter fun. Ski Beech (18 miles) has been
called one of the best ski resorts in the east, and was rated #1 by
National Ski Magazine. Sugar Mountain (11 miles) has 18 slopes, and
is the largest of the ski areas in North Carolina; Sugar Mountain is
one of the few resorts in the east that boast an elevation above 1000
feet, south of New England. Also near by? Appalachian Ski Mountain
(27 miles) and Hawksnest (15 miles).
Like to hike and sightsee? Just ten miles from our front door is the
Blue Ridge Parkway, the perfect way to see the mountains in the area.
This recreational road is designated for scenic driving and every bend
in the Parkway offers another, even MORE breathtaking view! Perfect
for day trips, hiking, rock jumping and having a blast! The toll-free
Parkway winds from Shenandoah National Park in Virginia to the Great
Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina. It's our favorite
way to spend a day!
One of our favorite summer things is Elk River Falls, an old swimming
hole in the grandest of fashion, just 10 miles from the cabin
in nearby Elk Falls. These falls are pictured below. Once there it's
only a few minutes into the National Park to enjoy swimming, rock
hopping, fishing or just lounging with the butterflies on the natural
rock formations.
Grandfather Mountain, just 8.5 miles away is Carolinas Top Scenic
Attraction. At 5,964 feet, Grandfather Mountain is the highest peak
in the Blue Ridge Mountains and has been considered the most
biologically diverse mountain in eastern North America. The private
park offers spectacular scenery and adventurous walking across the
Mile High Swinging Bridge. This is a favorite with our guests.
Boone, North Carolina, just 17 miles away and home to Appalachian
State University, was recently voted one of the top 10 outdoor cities.
The tallest mountain in the East lies not in Vermont, New Hampshire or
Maine but near Boone, North Carolina. Its 6,684-foot Mount Mitchell,
a centerpiece of the Pisgah National Forest and Blue Ridge Mountains,
whose valleys hide hip little hiking towns like this one. Paddlers hit
the Nolichucky and French Broad Rivers for class III and IV rapids
while mountain bikers wheel along the 18-Mile Ride. For a classic
adventure, tackle the 40-mile stretch of the Appalachian Trail that
runs through here; even in the summer, temperatures remain
refreshingly cool.
Like to fish? Just 13 miles away, according to their website, Foscoe
Fishing has been providing clients with top notch guides and fly
fishing experiences. Foscoe Fishing Company and Outfitters offer year
round excursions, float and wade trips on over 300 miles of small
streams and tailrace rivers for brown, rainbow and brook trout.
One of our guest families tells us:
"If you take a left at the end of Vale Rd. and go about 5-6 miles
you'll see a Cranberry High School on the left. Turn left at school
(may be 19E?) and go through Cranberry community. Eventually you'll
see the town on Minneapolis and there's normally good trout fishing
there and river goes several miles. After you go through Plumtree,
Yellow Mountain Baptist Church is on the left and that's where Zach
caught his brown. Last year he caught a nice Brook trout in the same
area. My son caught his first Brown Trout (19 in) near Spear
community. We're having it mounted. We had a great time. There's
usually good areas near Linville Falls too. So many places are
"Posted" that it's hard to find a good location."
Like horseback riding? I didn't think much of it initially but now
I'm hooked. The place we go takes you up and down mountains, across
streams and through the most beautiful NC forest trails - and we're
not talking about paying Valle Crucis prices of $60.00 or $70.00 for a
one hour ride, just $25.00 for a full hour during our recent stay in
July, 2008. It's a must do on our vacation.
Linville Caverns and Falls (12 miles) located at the head of the
beautiful Linville Valley on US 221, North Carolinas only caverns lie
deep under Humpback Mountain. Linville Falls is a beautiful series of
dramatic falls that drop to a deep gorge, accessed by a trail lined
with rare virgin stands of white pine, and hemlock. The area around
the Falls is one of the few places in these mountains where the
Rosebay, Catawba, and Carolina Rhododendron grow side by side. A
campground and picnic area along the Linville River are among the most
popular on the Parkway. The various trails here include the short
walk up Duggers Creek and more strenuous walks along the Linville Gorge.
Gem mining - there are dozens of places to gem mine and we've done a
few of them, but the most enjoyable was at Emerald Village near Spruce
Pine, just thirty minutes away. It's a real (feldspar) mine in a
beautiful natural setting with an authentic look back at how things
were. You get to walk around the mining area and the museum is well
worth the $5.00 per person ($4.00 for kids, I think). The gem mining
was cheaper and far more productive than ANY of our other gem mining
stops. Definitely a must see and do.
Roan Mountain State Park (14 miles) in nearby Tennessee, encompasses
2,006 acres of southern Appalachian forest at the base of 6,285 foot
Roan Mountain. Park elevation ranges from 3,000 feet in the valley to
around 3,700 feet on surrounding ridges. Rich hardwood forests allow
for a great diversity of life and a wide range of outdoor activities.
Park guests have opportunities to hike along creeks and ridges, fish
for trout, play tennis, swim, tour a century old farmhouse, join
rangers and naturalists for educational programs, and enjoy mountain
music concerts. Wildflowers and wildlife inhabit the hollows and
ridges of the Roan foothills in abundance. From Dutchman's-breeches to
deer, trillium to turkeys and bee balm to black bears there is always
something to discover.
In nearby Blowing Rock (15 miles) the Tweetsie Railroad is an
amusement park that is a blast from the past! Enjoy a three-mile
adventure ride on a historic steam locomotive that transports guests
through the mountains and an authentic frontier village with country
fair rides, crafts and live entertainment. Open May-October. I can
honestly tell you that I was a bit skeptical of this tourist
attraction, but we thoroughly enjoyed the nostalgia of simpler days at
this wholesome, family oriented park - and make sure you check out the
petting zoo. It's a wonderful day and one of our favorites!
The Blowing Rock is North Carolinas oldest travel attraction.
Beautiful short scenic walk with a garden waterfall, gardens,
observation tower and unique gift shops. Open daily March-December and
open weekends January-February, weather permitting.
We have specific directions from the cabin to most of these
attractions at the cabin...
The town of Newland, the county seat and hub of Avery county has the
highest county seat East of the Rocky Mountains. It's like
stepping back 40 years into the past. It is a gem of a town with
everything you need: a couple of food stores, a hardware store,
restaurants, McDonald's, pizza, a video store, drug store, several gas
stations and convenience stores.
One resident we talked to says that he goes out of town for a week and
doesn't even bother to lock his house!

vacation rental rates

Here's what our guests say, (rates follow):
"Before arriving, I have to admit that I was apprehensive, but when I
walked in, I was thrilled! Cleanliness? WOW! Honest representation
of the property on the web site? Exactly as advertised, actually
better! Overall guest experience? This was SO relaxing.... The cabin
was SO clean and well kept, the decorating was great, the deck and
creek were awesome.... we LOVED it!! We are strongly advising our
brothers and their wives to enjoy it too!!" ---Sally and family,
Michigan
"The place was immaculate. The cabin is well located for day trips
around the mountains, and with a working kitchen, nice yard to play
in, and a grocery&video store within minutes, everything was close at
hand for a relaxing, stress-free end of the day: people got time in
the creek, a spot for a nap, a hot shower, home-cooking, a video,
whatever anybody needed. Staying in a cramped hotel and dealing with
restaurant meals would have been really difficult for us. I think we
had a family vacation upon which everyone will reflect fondly. Thanks
for making this available." --Dave and family, Durham, NC
"Our family enjoyed the peacefulness of the inside and outside
surroundings of the cabin. The sounds of nature especially the creek
was so soothing and my children loved playing in the water. The cabin
felt so comfortable and very much like home. Buck was enjoyed by us
all! We are anticipating our next stay!"
--Crystal, Pennsylvania
"We had a blast and just loved your place! Thanks for a wonderful
time!" --The Fowlers
"The wife and I enjoyed the cabin and we love the Newland area. The
cabin is a such a great get away from the hustle and bustle of
Washington DC. The country air, pleasant temperatures and the overall
experience left the two of so very relaxed and not wanting to go back
to DC. We will be back next year!" --Ann and Bernie, Washington DC
"Everything was great. Even the weather was perfect!"
--Walker family, Eastern North Carolina
"We hiked to waterfalls and up mountains, but really didn't need to
leave the house to have a good time. The kids played in the creek and
explored while we relaxed and enjoyed the scenery and peace of the
area. It was a great mountain vacation. We were comfortable, well
stocked, and close to everything" --Robin, Tom and family, Florida
"We had a blast and did a ton of tourist things: Linville
Caverns/Falls/Gorge, Grandfather Mountain, downtown Boone (shopping),
gem mining, Blue Ridge Parkway, Altapass Orchard, Banner Elk Caf,
Woodlands BBQ, Pickin Pig Carolina BBQ, New River Zoo and Ashe County
Cheese Store. Being in this area was addictive because there was no
noise, traffic, rude drivers or high humidity. The people are so
friendly, the towns are very clean and the views are spectacular.
Small town life at its best!"
--Danielle, Florida

Did anything disappoint you? No!
Will you return? Absolutely, we had a great week!
-- Marc, Eastern North Carolina
"We had a wonderful holiday, found the cabin to be very well set up
and a perfect spot to visit the Blue Ridge Mountains. We did the
local sights, Linville, Grandfather Mountain and the Blue Ridge
Parkway and some of the NC Scenic Roads to Boone via Valle Crucis, and
also went down to Ashville. The local people were very helpful and
made our stay a pleasure. Even though, from Montreal it is a 2 day
trip down, 9 hours each day but the visit to La Casa was well worth
the drive."
--Sheena, Montreal
"The house was VERY clean and well stocked with all the amenities
needed for a wonderful stay. Overall guest experience? WONDERFUL. We
also really liked the proximity to all the great attractions. We were
able to go see so many things because we were in the middle of
everything."
--Tom, Eastern North Carolina
"A lot of care and interest was invested in this property in order to
make a home away from home for vacationers."
--Guy and Faye-Georgia
