Apartment w/ 2 Bedrooms - 1 Bathrooms - Sleeps 4
Although The Duke looks like a large red brick colonial it is actually
a 9-unit apartment building. It was built in 1923 and carefully
remodeled in 2005. The Duke was honored when it won the 2006 Niagara
Beautification Award. Much of the original floor plan was maintained
while modern conveniences were incorporated to accommodate modern needs.
You will be staying in one of the first floor, two bedroom apartments.
The furnishings are new, plush, and on the contemporary side with a
sprinkling of original artwork and antiques, like the Alexander Smith
rug in the dining area.
The Duke is very centrally located to numerous activities, is
extremely comfortable, clean, and new while at the same time being
very affordable.
There is a queen size bed in the Master Bedroom and a double in the
second bedroom. The kitchen is fully stocked with pots, pans, plates,
glasses, and silverware. Feel free to use any can goods in the
cupboards and if you choose to replace them that would be grand.
There is a coin operated washer and dryer in the building which you
are welcome to use as well.
Located in the newly forming Historic District, The Duke is surrounded
by large homes of Niagara Fall’s founding fathers. It is a short walk
to the Main Post Office, (on Main Street), chain grocery store,
several banks, and pharmacies.
At either end of Cedar Ave. is Whirlpool or Rt104 (Main Street). Both
will take you to the historic Village of Lewiston, about 7 miles down
river. On the way you will pass the NY State Power Authority.
Unfortunately it was closed to the public after 911. You will also
see Niagara University a thriving private college.
Lewiston is fun to shop the stores on Center Street or eat at the
Riverside Restaurant. It is also the launching site for river rafting.
Continuing on 104 you will come to Youngstown another quaint town at
the mouth of Lake Ontario and the site of Fort Niagara, built to guard
us from the red coats. The Fort and surrounding park are open daily
for tours.
If you like country scenery, continue to Wilson. The Boat House
restaurant in this quaint harbor is like a Norman Rockwell painting.
If you crave the action of a big city Buffalo, (home of the Buffalo
wing) is only 25 minutes away. It also features Frank Lloyd Wright’s
newly restored Miner House, open to the public. Klienhans Music Hall
features the Buffalo Philharmonic as well as many contemporary groups
at very reasonable prices.
Yes we are within walking distance of the Rainbow Bridge to Canada
(10-15 minutes) and a great look at the Falls as you walk over. You
can hike to the river’s edge at Devil’s Hole, and maybe find an
arrowhead among the rock formations. We are only a block away from the
Aquarium as well. More and more I could keep writing but no more room!!
